From: Emma Thorn Maybe I misinterpereted what the last name Linden means but....I always thought it meant the person worked for Linden Labs....that in turn would mean that Jeska is just DOING HER JOB. Moopf, how would you like it if I came to your place of employ and starting telling you that what you were doing was pathetic? You probably wouldn't like it, would you? Have any of you people that seem so fond of insulting her taken into account that MAYBE what she does here is no reflection whatsoever of her personal opinion, and that she is just posting these things so she can get her next paycheck? I know it wouldnt bother me aslong as i got paid at the end of the day, you can same im pathetic or whatever you want aslong as the checks in the bank.

Emma, give me a break. In one capacity or another we all work for or with, or in the front line of people who will question you. I'm sure you've had problems with people who've called you from the phone company etc. when they've "just been doing their job as well". Jeska may be just doing her job, but maybe the rules she's working under for that job are wrong, eh? Or maybe the rules are open to interpretation and somebody's being a bit over-zealous.

Moopf - The request I made about naming names was to not start a thread, naming someone in the title, which was negative or obviously trolling. So a thread called "[name] ripped me off" would fall into this category. This thread does not (nor do the assorted happy birthday threads, for example).
This thread wasn't moderated because names were used, it was because the forums aren't a great place to post something addressed to a couple of people. There are better communication tools for that.

Robin, I belive it was not direct to a couple of people but to everyone ABOUT a couple of people. Showing thanks and gratitude in public is now a crime.

You say a happy brithday thread doesn't fit in with your first example but it does fit in with your second example, so why aren't all happy birthday threads treated to the same post from a forum mod (or even the congrats thread to GOM, which named a couple of names in the thread title)? I mean, sheesh, use some consistency, would ya?

From: CalvinRichard Klein Robin, I belive it was not direct to a couple of people but to everyone ABOUT a couple of people. Showing thanks and gratitude in public is now a crime. No, it was NOT about two people, it was to two people. Go back and read the original post. Or lemme quote it: From: billy Madison I am seeking permission to have an event at my place in honor of the milestones you have crossed. I would also like one of you guys to do a little demo at the place (granting you permit to me having the event) I would just like to honor you guys and everything you have done for secondlife. Your inventions/contraptions are mind blowing and highly loved by many residents.
I would like to personally thank you guys for making my bussiness expandable in such a manor. I have vendors all over now and was too tapped for time to update them all before so i simply did not put them out. Your vendor system has allowed me to put them all out and keep them updated from the web. I thank you for this. See the first sentence? Lemme highlight the pertinent parts: From: someone I am seeking permission to have an event at my place in honor of the milestones you have crossed. Namely he's asking them permission to hold an event in their honor. You could do that just as easily through IM. Second sentence: From: someone I would also like one of you guys to do a little demo at the place (granting you permit to me having the event) I would just like to honor you guys and everything you have done for secondlife. He's asking if one or both of them would be willing to attend, and demonstrate things. Again, easily asked through IM. I could go through the full thing, but now that I've gotten you started, you should be able to figure out the rest. If this thread were something like: I'd just like to take this moment to thank Adam Zaius and Nexus Nash for their blah blah blah, THEN it would be a public thank you. If it were a Hey! I'm holding a party in honor of Adam Zaius and Nexus Nash at X on Y in Z then again, it would be a decent post, though it should be posted in the Events thing, and not this forum. It's neither. It is a personal communication between billy and two other people ONLY. It -does- admittedly wander over and brush up against a "public thank you" style post, but only barely, and the focus is MUCH more a communication between three people. That is a bad thing.

From: someone No, it was NOT about two people, it was to two people. Moleculor, by the same token most happy brithday threads are to the person. I mean look, we're arguming semantics here, which just shows you how ridiculous this line that LL has drawn is.

From: CalvinRichard Klein Read the start of the next paragraph. Like I said, it brushed (barely) into being a "about" rather than "to", but the only way this thread could be considered "legal" is if it did not contain the "to" portions at all. And the second paragraph could easily be read either in an "about" way or a "to" way, depending on your perspective. From: someone Also read the post after that one. STATING the intentions. The next post states the intentions of the party he wants to hold, not the post, and is therefore irrelevant to this discussion. From: Moopf Murray Moleculor, by the same token most happy brithday threads are to the person. I mean look, we're arguming semantics here, which just shows you how ridiculous this line that LL has drawn is. I realize that. I also realize that I think that "Happy Birthday" threads need to die. Messily and soon, preferably. If SL ever actually grows large, they'll either need to ban birthday threads, or make a forum dedicated solely to them, or else General will be completely over-run by them. They're spammy, and not all of us want to read them.

My god, you guys suck. And I mean that personally, just so there's no confusion. He's tryin' to say something nice about someone, and all you guys can do is bitch.
And then make a worthless-ass post about using instant messages. Cred = Zero.

From: CalvinRichard Klein You know i was just shopping last week and *edited* had some really nice clothes, she was located in *edited* right next to *edited* have you checked out her products? Just wondering how long will it take until someone creates an alt named "Edited" and becomes the most popular player in the forums.

From: Moopf Murray Oh wow, this is pretty ridiculous I have to say. Don't you have anything better to do? Three cheers for Jeska. Even in a 'General' forum we don't need clutter of people starting to thank everyone that ever helped them.

If Linden says don't use names in the subject title then people shouldn't use names. Seems as if everyone wants a waiver because what they want to say is different and they want to thank someone (or two in this case). These people need to follow the rules. Period. It doesn't make people who enforce the published rules suck or those of us who agree with them suck. It just means that we believe in consistency.

Maybe so... and I'll give you credit when there is consistency in enforcement for things that matter. All we got here is a buncha bandwagon jumpers. If all someone has to say in their post is 'use IM', then they should be usin' IM themselves, you know what I'm sayin'?
And some of these people complaining, good god. All these people who just a few threads over are goin' on and on about how they don't want player government. But they are sure as hell happy to fill this message board with a bunch of bullshit about what is appropriate to post or not. Hypocrite is one word for that, but I can surely think of more.
Linden attention here is also ridiculous, considering some of the other posts on this board that get left alone, and considering all the myriad of things off the boards that would benefit from someone nitpicking at them.
If we are gonna have forum moderation, then lets have it. And if not, then let's not.

I simply wonder what the big deal is anyway, no matter what he's saying as long as he's not attacking someone or spreading gossip? Is it because it's wasting too much of Jeska's time to read through threads that aren't necessary? Is it the bandwidth or storage space it consumes?
If LL is on a tight budget, ya know there are alot more unnecessary threads that can be deleted as well. For examples, threads about pecan pie, useless polls, "3 word" threads, "5 word" threads, sdaerht sdrawkcab, and the list goes on.
People hang out here and socialize. There's plenty of useless rambling on here. One person's trash is another person's treasure. I might not be interested in pecan pie, but I would think Jeska's pretty bored or grumpy if she started banning people who started threads about pecan pie.
It kind of looks like it's "pick on Billy Madison" week to me. So he pissed a couple people off.... well I've seen people say much worse on these forums than anything I've seen him say. If you don't find someone to be interesting or you don't like the way they think, then fine, so be it. It doesn't mean it's okay to treat them like they're slime. I don't know him but he's gotten quite a few laughs out of me when reading some of his posts. I can't understand why everyone's on his case like white on rice during the past couple days.
And with that said, I personally think this new "naming names" policy is a piece of crap. If *edit* or *edit* Linden want to police so strictly, they should be policing those who are attacking people directly, not just tossing a blanket policy over everyone, imo.

I agree with many of the comments posted on this thread. In my opinion, threads should only be edited/deleted if someone has reported them with a valid excuse (not he/she has an ugly forum avatar, so you need to delete their post, kind of excuse). And if you don't want to read someone's post, you don't have to. If you worry about forum clutter, you can always add the person to your ignore list and/or bump the threads that you find important by posting on them.
