It is also about the domination of the planet by American "culture" which is based on individual forthrightness and "moxie," and eschews politeness as a matter of course.

That may well be a prevailing sentiment about Americans but it's hardly accurate. It's a stereotype and it's quite offensive to those of us who were raised with manners here. In my experience rude and impolite people come from all over the globe. I've spent the last 15 years living in NYC and then DC, both very international cities. Take any slice of humanity from any place on the planet and you'll likely find about the same proportion of assholes. You're a bit out of line, although I must say I appreciate the humor value of someone complaining about the impoliteness of others while being extremely impolite themselves. I agree with you often, but your bias is a bit extreme at times.

Adriana, in my opinion you were the one who was rude and need to modify your manners. Your impolite response clearly invoked impoliteness from the other person. Unless you put a sign all over your house "DON'T ENTER" "no intruders" or restrict access there is nothing rude about entering someones house in the context of SL. In case you didn't notice this is not real life.

The person who entered your house was probably curious and I suspect it was a friendly "hi" All you had to say was "Hi, I am sorry I am busy and like to be private now, thank you for visiting my house" I suspect the person whould have replied "I am sorry I disturbed you". Before preaching mannerism, politeness how about looking at yourself a bit more critically?

First up

There is now a dorbell for sale at slexchange - it has a big sign on it saying please press doorbell before entering.

Second up

My reply was not impolite - I effetively said exactly what you just suggested - only shortened it - with a few alterations

1 - I rarely use the term "hi" - hello or ciao - yes
2 - I had a screen full of scripts and wanted to keep the reply short
3 - I rarely thank people for walking thru what to any observer is clearly a closed door
4 - regardless of reply - being told you are in the wrong place - normally invokes an apology - not an insult ( when was the last time you told a guard to "F*** O**" when he mentioned that you are not allowed in that part of the building and crossing that rope back in the corridor is not allowed ?)
5 - I do not use a security device on my apartment as most effect innocent people flying overhead or those accidentally landing in my front garden, or on my roof.

From now on people can use my doorbell - before walking up the stairs.
