From: Jack Digeridoo I vote for The Matrix You probably can't use the name "The Matrix" it is tradmarked by a movie and products as well as a game comming out. As much time as I have put in the game lately..I feel like it's a Secondlife..Im not sure why the name Secondlife is nerdy..unless you think a name has to be big bad and TOTALLY COOL AND INCREDIBLE! I think the name fits the game fine. I guess someone would think the name "DOOM" was cool and that would be a better name. Maybe we could call it "Bad Ass Mo Foes from Another Life"..hehe. Maybe Simlife is a better name..I guess it's all in opinion and you know what they're like.

Sure, because the name "Metaverse" is so much less geeky and easier to explain than "Second Life".

I don't even know what Metaverse means...I know what a Secondlife means..it simply means..you have a Seconlife which is bascially a Fantasy Life..you could even call it "Fantasy Life".

Been done....been mulled over. Second Life works just fine. "Non Geeky" friends are unlikely to wnat to get involved in any case....and should they be prepared to, simply because of a name change....well.........pretty shallow really. For me..... the guy who leaps forward to play a MM'er, simply because it's called "The Matrix", there's your ubergeek right there.

don't really like secondlife either, but don't really feel geeky saying the name and names like 'the matrix' or the 'metaverse' or DOOM or QUAKE or 'The Grid' whatever... I think they all sound too... boy-ish and too child-ish.... keep in mind that 40% is female and 100% should be over 18... when I turned 18 I didn't really care too much about 'cool' names like DOOM etc. but maybe that's just me so I don't either know a better name for SL so let's keep it

Yeah, that's true .. a name that appeals to women is a good idea. Not so sure matrix / metaverse / etc will appeal to women.
However, SecondLife is a stumbling block. If I want to portray SecondLife as a tool to work minded folks they look a me like I'm from another planet when I say "secondlife" has potential to get things done.
Someone had a good idea about calling it something else to your friends. I think that's a great idea, it would be useful if lindenlabs could make that easier for us though somehow..
Maybe create a client which can be easily re-branded or something.

From: blaze Spinnaker I find when I informally poll my non-nerd friends that when I tell them about SecondLife they get this weird look on their face at the name.
SecondLife, while kinda accurate, does weird people out. It sounds a bit .. geeky?
How about "The MetaVerse" .. or "CyberSpace" .. or "The Matrix" or something a bit more cool that you don't feel foolish when you bring it up in conversation.
Word of mouth, after all, is everything, and when you feel nerdy saying "SecondLife" you're not going to give it a lot of good word of mouth. Metaverse? It would be like changing "McDonalds" to "Hamburger". CyberSpace? Hmmm... This one is just too burnt out. I think the WWW already has that tag. The Matrix? I don't think we want LL getting sued. Plus, there's already a "The Matrix" MMROPG due early next year... so, I dunno. But anyways, what's so wrong with "Second Life"? You can't please everyone. I know tons of people who didn't and don't like the matrix at all. I myself was drawn to interest solely by the name. Some like, some don't. But yea.. I guess that if a name change is prompted, at least should be a little more original than the ones posted.

From: Icon Serpentine Though I'm sure many would disagree with me, I found Snowcrash disappointing. It was too juvenile and not at all convincing. While it extolled some brilliant ideas; the story, setting, and everything else that makes a good book lacked.
Therefore, I'd almost hang my head if SL were renamed "The Metaverse." I think the name is actually good and when I describe it to people, the name has little to do with what it actually is.
Besides, calling it anything other than Second Life might require the help of a trademark lawyer these days. Second Life is a probably not the greatest name, somewhat lacking in creativity. I get the same responses from people when i try to tell them about the game, and it takes the mentioning either the book itself or L$->$ exchanges to peak curiousity at all. You might want to start hanging your head now since your actually participating in it already regardless of the name. SL was designed around the concept written out in Snow Crash after all. I vote Happyland or Cosa Nostra =P

Yah know, I still think "SecondLife" really holds SL back. I always feel silly telling people "Oh you should check out SecondLife" .. ("Second what?" Maybe they change it to SL Online or something.
