I find when I informally poll my non-nerd friends that when I tell them about SecondLife they get this weird look on their face at the name.
SecondLife, while kinda accurate, does weird people out. It sounds a bit .. geeky?
How about "The MetaVerse" .. or "CyberSpace" .. or "The Matrix" or something a bit more cool that you don't feel foolish when you bring it up in conversation.
Word of mouth, after all, is everything, and when you feel nerdy saying "SecondLife" you're not going to give it a lot of good word of mouth.

So, are you just trolling now? Or did you want to sneak in something about the Linden Dollar?

Lordfly do us both a REALLY big favor-
If you see a thread, and think it says NOTHING important and is just looking for reaction, please PLEASE please don't reply.
All you do is boost it and put it on everyone's radar.
However, I personally feel that this thread doesn't suffer from that. SecondLife is truly a weird name that does not connotate warm fuzzies. I have yet to find one non geeky friend that actually likes the name.
And about 95% of my non geeky friends saw and loved The Matrix.
I personally have a hard time extolling the virtues of SecondLife simply because saying the name makes me feel socially awkward.

Couldn't you just ... Call it 'The MetaVerse' yourself? I really don't think LL would change the name because your friends think it's nerdy.

Hmmm, I dont know, "Second Life" is a really shitty name. Maybe if we called it "SeconD Life" with that capitilized D it would make people think Linden Lab is "leet".

Though I'm sure many would disagree with me, I found Snowcrash disappointing. It was too juvenile and not at all convincing. While it extolled some brilliant ideas; the story, setting, and everything else that makes a good book lacked.
Therefore, I'd almost hang my head if SL were renamed "The Metaverse." I think the name is actually good and when I describe it to people, the name has little to do with what it actually is.
Besides, calling it anything other than Second Life might require the help of a trademark lawyer these days.

You know, I wouldn't particularly be opposed to calling it the Metaverse. In truth, it IS hard to explain "Second Life" to people as its name... it also creates the automatic response of, "My first life is too important for a second one," yadda yadda. Okay, I'll bite, thumbs up to this name change concept.

I have an idea - let's ask LL to create a second grid completely separate from Second Life and called it "The Metaverse". Then everyone who thinks Second Life is a silly name can have their account moved over to the new grid.
That will kill .... oh, innumerable birds with one stone!

I second 'Fred'.
And blaze, I'm surprised you didn't post anything about the Linden o.O
Matrix is also a known and respected label complete with their own MMO.

I like to thik of it asa first-gen Metaverse. But calling it THE metaverse would be tacky AND prolly get you sued by.... if not Neal Stephenson (0wnXXorz), but everyone with a developing online community.

That will kill .... oh, innumerable birds with one stone! or we could call it the "educational grid" and only let schools use it for serious pedagogical purposes. that would have immeasurerable usefulness.

Just out of curiosity - how many times have this been sugested before? Or was it to that you said 142, Cris? At least if you desperately need a name change sugestion tread try to be a little inovative...? I like my Second Life as that is exactely what it is, too me ( Kris). I have no problem explaining or telling people about it, including the name. Maybe cuz I am concidered far from nerdy? Heh fooled them all Also I concider Fred as a bad sugestion cuz then I *would* indeed have an explaination problem towards my friends as that means Peace in Norwegian
