I'm not sure where the Times Online got their information about scruffy men and slutty women, but the CDC has this to say about it:
Recent epidemiologic studies indicate that infectious agents may contribute to some cases of schizophrenia. In animals, infection with Toxoplasma gondii can alter behavior and neurotransmitter function. In humans, acute infection with T. gondii can produce psychotic symptoms similar to those displayed by persons with schizophrenia. Since 1953, a total of 19 studies of T. gondii antibodies in persons with schizophrenia and other severe psychiatric disorders and in controls have been reported; 18 reported a higher percentage of antibodies in the affected persons; in 11 studies the difference was statistically significant. Two other studies found that exposure to cats in childhood was a risk factor for the development of schizophrenia. Some medications used to treat schizophrenia inhibit the replication of T. gondii in cell culture. Establishing the role of T. gondii in the etiopathogenesis of schizophrenia might lead to new medications for its prevention and treatment. Interestingly, the info about stupid rats seems to be true. We tested the hypothesis that the parasite Toxoplasma gondii manipulates the behaviour of its intermediate rat host in order to increase its chance of being predated by cats, its feline definitive host, thereby ensuring the completion of its life cycle. Here we report that, although rats have evolved anti-predator avoidance of areas with signs of cat presence, T. gondii's manipulation appears to alter the rat's perception of cat predation risk, in some cases turning their innate aversion into an imprudent attraction. _____________________

The irony of this article is that it's based on an two year old research paper done that said there is a CORRELATION[Not causation] of particular behaviors. In fact, I keep my appearence up quite well and I happen to be of the male sex. If the research is correct, then why are there not more double-blind studies that suggest similar results? I think the fact is that this is more pseudo-science parading as fact rather than accepting the fact that some folks are just plain different.
An example of pseudo-scientific studies being paraded as fact is the infamous study in France where 35,000 people were examined for their birthdates and 'common personality traits' as to see if their horoscope Sun Signs would correlate. The problem is that the study's own researchers found in smaller samples that there was NO CORRELATION to sun signs and personality unless they used Meta-Analysis[cross-study statistical analysis]. This method is known to fudge the significance of data by a scale of three orders of deviation. If that is true then similar studies[such as the thread's cat phage v human personality alteration] are subject to the same deviation in significance; meaning their data is plain wrong. -- Bridget |

These scientists are dumb ; the real explanation is that men who have cats don't need women or social interaction so much, because cats are so cool and beautiful and lovelly. There cats fill a large part of their need to be with beautiful things.
For women it's different: they subconsciously try to compete with the cat (in vain obviously), so they dress better, are more friendly and so on... _____________________
