/3/54/58198/1.htmlLong overdue and I am very happy to see this! Would like to see this kind of thing for shops/merchants as well as developers. I know the line of demarcation is often thin or blurred, but there's no such thing as too much information when it comes to putting people in touch with one another in this place. Hurray LL!

This would be good if it were open to all, and let the people consulting the directory decide who is worthy of approaching, based on their own opinions of the people's resumes. coco

I was also very pleased to get this E-Mail earlier this week. The task of boiling down my skills and services in such concise terms is a little daunting, though, and I'm feeling lazy, so I may not submit my info yet. Still, cool to see LL moving forward with their efforts to amplify the power of SL's developer base.

It is open to all. You can enter if you wish and no one is saying you shouldn't bother. However, any submission is subject to the opinion of LL as to whether or not it qualifies and the criteria upon which that qualification will be based is clearly stated. If you want a directory that anyone can be listed in, and where there are no strictures to insure legitimacy in existence, purpose, or ability, kindly see the 'find' tab. Enjoy.

I once saw a profile where the Interests tab listed I want to: get drunk Skills: getting drunk btw, on the subject of legitimacy versus Find, here is a gem: "A variety of items including stained glass, architectural elements, hats, avatars, and the latest in avatar penis technology." Oh yeah, that would like GREAT to share with other companies needing developers!

This is why it is probably a good idea to stay on the good side of Linden Labs, as these qualifications are subjective and you do not want to be blacklisted.
Edit: Griefers need not apply.

I wonder how difficult it is to make the cut to get listed in this directory. They make it sound rather daunting: 1. "The Developer Directory is the beginning of an overall world-class developer program. In the future, we will be adding training, documentation and support to ensure anyone interested in providing development services has the proper level of support from Linden Lab." What do they mean? What kind of training, etc., would a person be wiring themselves into for this, in terms of additional commitment outside of doing the jobs themselves? And who is a "developer?" Does this include people who run events, or provide, say, rental services, or land sales services? Does somebody who specializes in, say, residential homes, qualify? Or is it all relative - in other words, they have an idea of how many people they plan to include in this, and plan to select only those with the best track record? Or is this to be a more extensive directory, so that if, say, I wanted to hire a scripter, I could consult the directory and have a large choice of names? Or is this just for people like those outside companies to consult? Or is it for the Lindens themselves to use to, for example, take over building the welcome areas, roads, bridges, etc.? 2. "-Phone: [Although optional for Developer listing, applicants must be prepared to speak on the phone with interested residents]" How come? Is the idea that people will ultimately hire these people for rl money, and therefore they want to be findable? Or just to make it easier to communicate what is desired? 3. "-Fax -Your Website URL" What if you don't have a fax or a website? 4. "The Fine Print: Your submission does not guarantee inclusion in the directory listing. Applicants will be reviewed base on current and past projects successfully completed in Second Life, technical and creative capabilities, quality and breadth of services offered and overall SL ratings generated by other residents. The information you submit may appear on lindenlab.com, secondlife.com and/or in Second Life." What do they mean, overall SL ratings generated by other residents - the ratings system we have? I think I need to know more about what is the goal of this program. Is this for those outside companies? Or for each other? Is this supposed to be la creme de la creme of all SL? Or the biggest companies capable of doing the most work? Which "quality and breadth of services" kind of implies. I'm thinking of individual house makers. There's only so much work they can contract for, if they are only one of them. 5. How hard is it to get into this thing? Knowing more about the uses and purposes for the directorywould go a long way toward explaining what the idea is here. I would pose these questions where the announcement was first made, but you can't pose questions there. coco

I tend to take things at face value. To me, the scoop is simply thus: From: someone Attention Developer: If you are a developer in SL, this is intended for you. If you have trouble understanding what 'developer' means, consider the literal meaning 'one who develops'. If further insight is required, consult your dictionary for a definition of 'develop'. From: someone As Second Life continues to grow and evolve, new opportunities will continue to emerge for Linden Lab, our residents and developers interested in creating content.
Occasionally, residents of Second Life have projects that require the specialized skills and knowledge of other residents. Linden Lab is giving you an opportunity to participate in a Developer Directory that will allow you to promote your services. Each developer listing will highlight your areas of expertise as well as your completed projects. Individuals interested in using your services will contact you directly to define required services and costs. I read this to mean 'We invite you to submit to a directory that will list your work in SL and how to reach you.' From: someone The Developer Directory is the beginning of an overall world-class developer program. In the future, we will be adding training, documentation and support to ensure anyone interested in providing development services has the proper level of support from Linden Lab. I read this to mean, 'We intend to create and maintain a directory of developers and later, expand it to include items that will support anyone who wishes to be a developer.' From: someone If you are interested in participating in the Second Life Developer Directory, please submit the information below to sldev@secondlife.com for review. Incomplete submissions may delay or prevent you from participating in the Directory. I read this to mean, 'If you want to be listed, send the following information to us. Please note - if you do not send all the information requested, we may not be able to list you.' From: someone REQUIRED INFORMATION
-SL Name -Company Name -City -State/Province -Country -Email
-Service Offerings: [Use one or two word descriptions. Examples: Content Creation, Animations, Scripting, Training, Support, etc.]
-Description: [Maximum 250 words describing your areas of expertise and company]
-Previous Projects Completed: [include the coordinates in SL, if applicable]
-Attach multiple screenshots including names of your work (include SL coordinates, if applicable) I read the above to mean that you have to provide all this information to be considered. If you do not have items in world as examples, you do not meet the critera. If you do not have screenshots of your work available, you do not meet the critera. They would prefer if you provide both screenshots and location information if possible, however, failure to provide location information will not disqualify you from consideration. From: someone OPTIONAL INFORMATION
-Phone: [Although optional for Developer listing, applicants must be prepared to speak on the phone with interested residents] -Instant Message -Fax -Your Website URL -Your SL Sim Name & Coordinates
-Attach a high quality TIFF or JPEG image of your company logo.
I read this to mean that this information should be submitted if you have it, but will not disqualify you if you do not. From: someone The Fine Print: Your submission does not guarantee inclusion in the directory listing. Applicants will be reviewed base on current and past projects successfully completed in Second Life, technical and creative capabilities, quality and breadth of services offered and overall SL ratings generated by other residents. The information you submit may appear on lindenlab.com, secondlife.com and/or in Second Life. I read this to mean that just because you submit a listing does not mean you will be listed. Each listing will be evaluated by presence of previously completed projects, a judgement of the technical and creative quality of those projects, a judgement of the quality and diversity of service being offered, and your SL ratings. I further understand that anything submitted for inclusion may be listed at one of three sites -- LindenLabs.com, SecondLife.com, and/or SecondLife Blog. There is very little room for misinterpretation if you stick to reading and not reading INTO things. Of course, I realise some folks have problems managing that. For those folks, I would suggest the following link: http://www.understandmore.com/?GLErdcomp

You say that, "I'm always developing noobies" tongue-in-cheek, Brace, but it is a skill, and does provide content (in that it provides the player base!), though I guess not for a directory such as this. And Cienna, I didn't see that about optional - so you don't have to have a fax and web site; that's good. But as for the other questions, although you don't believe they have any merit, and what has been said is all that ever needs to be said (and should I need any more elucidation, I can merely refer to that link to understandingmore.com you thoughtfully offered), somehow I still have all the questions I had before. Except about the fax and web site. Of them all, the uses to which the directory is intended to be put is probably the most important. I betcha some Linden will come along and answer these questions somewhere, sometime, too. Cause ya know, I think they are valid questions! Amazing, that, eh wot? coco

From: Cienna Samiam Actually, most of them are NOT valid questions. Most of them are instigatory questions laden with invalid assumptions and inferences of intent that would more likely offend anyone at Linden Labs than compel them to attempt answering. I do understand how and why it is that YOU have such a difficult time grasping this is the case. Which is, after all, why I put forth that link. Sadly, it seems you're just as insistent as ever in pretending any inability to comprehend things is the fault of those around you. Oh well. You're right, of course. Most of those questions were actually invented by me to be instigatory questions, laden with invalid assumptions and filled with inferences of intent that would probably prove offensive to any Linden who was unfortunate enough to have to view them rather than compel him or her to attempt answering. That's why it took me so long to think them up, in fact. Considering there was nothing to wonder about. I think I did a pretty good job at making up instigatory questions based on invalid assumptions designed to infer intent and most likely offend any Linden rather than forcing them to attempt to answer such impossible, illogical and pointless questions, don't you? Took quite a bit of thinking to manage to come up with so many offensive questions, too, and I did it in record time! So actually, I don't fail to grasp your very lucid analysis. You have seen through me entirely. Yet again, I must bow to your superior intellect and keen powers of observation. Sadly, it seems I have yet again failed to fool you by my pretense of not comprehending the already-obvious answers to my questions. Curses! Foiled again! I hereby withdraw all the questions as invalid instigatory questions. If the Lindens are as smart as you are, Cienna, they will see through me, too, and never answer any of them! We'll all be better off for that, too, I'm sure, thanks to your vigilance! coco P.S. Beatcha.

If some people weren't so busy looking for reasons to dislike something, they might actually like it.
Regardless, it is an excellent effort by LL to support content creation in their world and as such, gets only applause here.
I look forward to seeing them revamp categories and the search engine. Rapid, effective access to the variety of information available is a keystone for growth in any endeavor. It is good to see them focusing on it.

I might give it applause, too, if I even knew what the heck it was FOR, or what it MEANT, or how stiff the requirements are, or how big this directory is going to be. As it is, given insufficient information, it's too soon to break out the applause, imo. coco

Since nothing further has been forthcoming about this, I posted my questions in the Hotline. But in doing so, I became pretty convinced that this is probably not primarily for us to use to find, say, scripters and the like, but for (a) outside companies like that bank to use when they want things like that bank did - a whole Sim fixed up for using to teach young people about banking; and for (b) the Lindens themselves to use, to contract out things like welcome areas and roads and bridges on their own land without having to put out a call for bids each time and then have to review them and announce a winner. coco

Nice assumptive conclusion, though. They explain very nicely why the Lindens didn't bother to reply to your questions. Kind of pointless to try and tell someone anything different when they've already made up their mind what they're going to hear.

Pretty sure you are right about the bank. It looks pretty clear that they're looking for people who worked on it and things like it and liked it.
Count me in. A lot of stuff I've done has been in-world (U2 in SL) but more hasn't (Silver Bells & Golden Spurs, a teensie bit of the bank, other stuff that hasn't seen the light of day).
If I'm to be hired to go out-world, (or otherwise), then listing those credentials is important to both myself and the people who seek people with my experience. By meeting me in-world you wouldn't know who I am. My profile mentions nothing about scripting or animation and except for U2inSL, Mood Mixer, Turquoise, and a few trinkets my skills are invisible.
So all I can really say is if you want to be on the list you should submit and see what happens. But remember, you won't get every job you apply for. Maybe I won't either, can't hurt to try.

Not everything can be done by committee and prize - nothing will ever get done. I applaud LL for taking the steps to move forward with this program, I look forward to seeing what they are going to do. In addition to which, there is no vinegar in my questions; only in your own mind. coco
