me and the wife both play sl... i was unaware of any unhappiness ... but clearly there was... she left our relationship of 8 years to run off with a guy on sl... nothing really more that i would divulge in the forums

Not meaning any disrespect, but I get the distinct impression that Rice got burned somewhere or somehow, probably by a journalist. The hostility toward the prospect of any information-gathering I'm seeing is out of all proportion to what's been discussed here. O.o

I'd be very careful about this promise, too. A number of people who were interviewed for the original article in the Austin Statesman have complained that their anonymity was violated, or statements were attributed to them that were not made. While these sorts of complaints can be made by people who are embarrassed afterward about what they've said, there are also journalists who take advantage of their interviewees. Anyone who agrees to an interview has to realize that what they say will be used in ways that are completely beyond their control, for purposes they may not know about, by people they haven't gotten a real sense of during the interview process.

Merwan made an excellent point: The author's request for "secondhand stories" set my alarms off. In my experience, what information is gathered, and how it is gathered makes a difference in the quality of information correlated, and the effect it has on the researcher's natural bias. Therefore the editing process begins up front - with how the information is gathered.

As for the article itself, it was a simple, descriptive piece told through the quotes of residents or Lindens. It was much better researched and written than most I've seen about SL. However, the author implied all sorts of economic, sociological and historical analogies without really following through. At the end, you knew what SL was, basically, but you didn't know why.

Rice, I think I'll be needing your services now.... LOL

LOL.. first of all.. No i didnt get burned by a journalist, if you knew me in RL, ive been featured in a few sports sections of local papers and sports brochures - so i always approach journalists with a grain of salt..

Secondly, the relevance here is - someone made a comment about whether or not it was allowed for journalist to gather material from gamers to use in RL stories.. hence my post about why Linden lab would require someone to have permission..

Lastly.. no offense taken.. and your impression was completely off the wall -- so no offense to you either.. i just thought i would clear that up.

hmmm maybe you should check the sexual dynamic at Club Industry/QOTD, for all the levels of masters mistresses and pets (subs) and assorted friends there is a refreshing lack of jealousy. I think adults can handle multiple relationships/partners in SL if they are honest about it. In fact the universe created by sci-fi legend Robert A. Heinlein reminds me of what I experience there. Respect is the key, we are not real in the sense that a fling can produce offspring or diseases but pretending you are exclusive while sex-balling someone at random can produce hurt feelings from the lie or lie by ommision. I seem to spend an awfull lot of time talking dirty, taking my avi's clothes off where appropriate but don't feel sleezy or like I'm embarassing anyone and I have only experienced sexballs once with my current female avi and do not require it to prove my love or whatever, that is just another thing to do for fun but the real action is the talking, being suggestive, playing off of what someone says in a playfull way.

Adults have had sex in RL probably and I doubt any simulated sex can compete and quite frankly it can be tedious in SL. Seeing your avi in new positions and contraptions and all that is fun and if you care to experiment with alternate sexual (simulated) practices then SL would be a good place to start because the excitement takes place in your mind and the rest is just mechanical. If you find being a vampyre lesbian Mistress to be fun then go for it, it doesn't mean you can't be a faithfull spose in RL unless you stop the RL affection for the SL, then you have a problem. But single people and mature married adults relaxing after their RL day? SL is the place to endulge those less civilized parts of your sexual nature just be honest about it, don't lie and don't press the issue if someone is not interested, To each his own, enjoy!

For personal reasons I'm not pursuing this or any other stories in SL any longer. Thanks to everyone who responded. And thanks again to those who gave so generously of their time for my initial story.

As for myself, I've left SL for good. My account expires June 28 and I won't be involved in SL beyond that. Best wishes to the friends I've made and apologies to those upon whose toes I've clumsily tread. My experiences in SL have served not only as a milestone in my career as a journalist but, more importantly, as a catalyst for me to make some important life changes. So I'm grateful for having stumbled across SL back in November. I'm lucky.
