Just wondering something here so I'm gonna post a poll about it. Feel free to stay on topic and discuss if you want.

If your thinking about posting to the SL forums you should be Thick-skinned:

Yes or No

Thick-skinned Meaning:

impervious to criticism: not easily offended by criticism or insults

Edited for clearification ;)

Hrmm. I am ok with criticism and insults. I may defend myself, but I will also use those kinds of comments to launch a moment of introspection and possibly growth.

Lies and slander on the other hand, I can't think of any legitimate place for them in the forums.

Have you been living in the mountains without electricity or something? Anyone who posts in any forum anywhere on the internet needs pretty thick skin.

I have to agree with Buster. I have to admitt I like my male dominated forums (stereotype to fly wild) better. You can insult people left and right on my Fantasy Football forum, and no one cries and whines, they hit back, it is all in good fun and at the end of the day everyone is still freinds. I can't sale that about some other forums I frequent.

Acturaly yes I lived in the bush in Alaska for about 20 years then I lived in Saudi for 4 then....

Needless to say internet access was not the greatest nor was it a priority.

No I am not accustomed to this. I'm shocked that ppl find this acceptable behavior.

Just because it's always been this way doesn't make it right.

Yeah, I'm with Buster. I don't know how anyone can expect warm cuddles when they use the internet. You have to be grown up enough to handle less than friendly situations, otherwise it's definitely not for you.

Been in pleanty of rl situations where I had to handle things like a grown up ;) I was obviously nieve to think that the SL forums were an extention of SL. In which case maybe I have been extreamly lucky in meeting nice decent ppl maybe its not that way for everyone. Dunno I don't speak for everyone. I am becoming absolutly aware however that maybe honestly and truely I need to be looking at different options if this is "business as usual" for online forums.

Take Care :)

Well, even if we're not addressing flames and intentional insults, even honest misunderstandings and such can cause a hurt if one doesn't distance oneself a little bit at the very least from the possible impact of responses, rebuttles, etc.

Some folks enjoy a good banter session, love to debate vehemently but take no personal emotional meaning or content out of the exchange other THAN the exchange.

In person, it's a lot easier to discern these nuances, we have more cues, and in straight text, sometimes this can get lost and folks get so much more upset than the situation/intent warrents, which is a shame.

I think maybe the anonymity of the forum/text/cyber format might also bring out the voice in folks that don't enter this kind of debate/discussion format in their first lives, so they also might be a bit inexperienced with the idea being wrong (or just that the idea is being debated) does not equal the person being wrong.

But that's all debatable I'm sure. :p

I remember getting uber flamed, and MAN it upset me, cos it was my first flaming.

Now I just think... I'm here to have fun, if i want a serious conversation, i'll have one, I don't troll serious threads (much), and when having fun becomes a reason to be banned, then let me be the first to hold my hands out and say JESKA.. CUFF ME...

(yes I just wanted to say that)

These forums have become so soooo much worse since I started over a year ago, I mean people bitched about Kris and I trolling, but we never EVER did what half of the people on here do now.. Just cos we have fun (WE = Lots of FUN LOVERS), does not mean we are 12yrs old, and does not give ppl the reason to be condesending wankers.

And no, I wasn't aiming that at anyone.. JUST FOR CLARIFICATION..

I'm pretty thin skinned myself. I'm ok with that because I'm not afraid of feeling soiled if it came to it. I've never yet felt that way here.

I'm judicious about what I get involved in the forums. I only post about things that are truly meaningful to me. I never write off-the-cuff. I try to be careful with my words, often going through a couple of drafts before submitting. I usually go back and edit a word or a comma to get the right voice. When I finally let the post alone, I can justify the tone and almost every word of it to myself.

I've locked horns a couple of times, debated several times, and enjoyed it greatly. I've never been in a cut-throat pissing match, and won't engage in one. I don't need to win fights. I don't need prove I'm right. Yet anything I've ever wanted to say, I've said, and occassionally I've said it well. Sometimes I've said it very well. Sometimes I've edited out all coherency.

I'm a thin-skinned poster who posts according to that temperament. One need not have a thick skin. I think it only goes awry when the thin skinned approach the forums as if they were made of steel.

Enabran,

<< You have to be grown up enough to handle less than friendly situations, otherwise it's definitely not for you.>>

For some reason this made me laugh out loud. The reason being, of course, that the less-than-friendly situations are invariably caused by those who are definitely *not* grown up, despite their chronological age.

It strikes me as so sad that when you put many people in a position of anonymity, and therefore physical safety, they tend to abuse it. But then we know already, don't we, that power tends to corrupt? Being anonymous is being in a powerful situation.

I remember the old days of CB radio where you used to get the same kind of thing. People behind microphones would utter the same kind of abuse and threats that we see on the forums, but if you ever met them face to face, they would be polite and diffident.

Not the most pleasant of human characteristics IMO.

Well put. That's exactly how I view forum exchanges. What personal emotional meaning is there to be found in conversations held with strangers I don't know personally? A thick skin is useful in all parts of life... not just online forums :)

I was quite surprised at the venom that lies in the forums when I started participating. It does take some getting used to. Follow the crowd and you are fine but dare to believe in something that is against the majority and say so here and you will surely get pounced on.

I must also say that some people live in glass houses and throw stones anyway. There is one person who I will not name here, you know who you are, that about a year ago upon a heated discussion took it in-world and left an obscenity for me there when I logged in. Does that fact bother me? No, but it is quite humorous that this same person seems to whine and complain about what others may do to her/him but does not hold her/himself up to the same standard. After well over 3,000 posts this is the ONLY time that has ever happened to me and the irony is probably lost on this person.

I have thick skin anyhoo but found that pretty much any time I posted something serious that I had to be ready to take whatever manure was tossed my way. Yes, sometimes I fail miserably in a weak moment and get caught in the trap but for the most part I do try to let the personal attacks slide off my back. I find that those who use such tactics show their true self in their hate and contentment for anyone with an opposing view.

There are notable exceptions as well and I personally enjoy the banter of a good debate with someone willing to give intelligent responses and counter points. Overall though I would say a resounding YES, you had better have very thick skin to post just about anything because sure nuf someone will bitch bout it and maybe even attack you personally, deserved or not.

Other than that... I wanna stand in line to be cuffed by Jeska too. :o  Take me now... whilst I am weak Jeska!!!! You bring the whip, I’ll bring the feather. :o

Sticks and stones may break Billy's bones, but whips and chains excite him. :P

Isn't this sort of a 'duh' poll? Kind of on the order of "When going out in the Arctic tundra, you should wear something warm." Maybe not, though. Maybe people have a right to thier opinion. This poll sounds like a bully trying to get the public to blame the victims for being little wussy-boys that can't take the heat.

Oh, and I'd apologize for inferring that someone is a bully...but I'm sure we all have thick skins here, right?

Internet forums are little repositories of human nature and act as a kind of magnifying glass. One of the most common traits they magnify is how much easier it is for people to recognize in others what they fail to see in themselves. I can think of only a handful of posters who are above reproach. I'm not one of them, and neither are those who tend to complain the loudest about the forums being mean spirited.
