"Infinite Jest" by David Foster Wallace

No, SL reminds me of the BOOK, not the story. Hugely complex, sometimes difficult, takes some work to get through, guranteed to teach you things, often frustrating, often wet-your-pants funny, sometimes insightful but more often shallow, and worth it when all is said and done.

The mentality of many people on the SL forums often reminds mf of Atlas Shrugged, by Ayn Rand.

In the book, individuals who spend tremendous energies on producing quality products or new techniques for creating important things begin vanishing from the world, as people jealous of their hard work begin demanding access to the fruits of their labor at little or no charge. The prime justification of these demands is that people "need" the things they're demanding -- the cost should be irrelevant as a result of that token of need.

I don't think anyone here is vanishing yet.

Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman
Weaveworld by Clive Barker

Because both are about worlds that are inherently tied to the "normal" world, yet are complete and separate universes of their own with some very, very odd things.

Haven't read them, they're on my list! :) (which is extensive, long and probably will never ever end in my lifetime). I have read the children's book he did recently. Awesome!

sandman novels are great. i think much better than neverwhere, and american gods.

The Neverending Story and Harold and the Purple Crayon are AWESOME examples :) *grumbles* *mad she didn't think of those herself*

Stoneself--Definitely going to move those Sandmans up on my list. I thoroughly loved Neverwhere and really really liked American Gods, so I'm assuming I'm going to really really love the Sandman ones *grin* Thanks!

Lezzee, 50-year-old women in 20-year-old AV's chasing men of indeterminate age, honor, and gender across a cluttered, subtropical landscape. What does that remind me of?

"Days of Our Lives"?
"The Bold and the Beautiful"?
"Passions"?
even, "Another World"?

or perhaps To Have, and Have Not.

A Daniel Steele Novel (Drama / Sex / Romance) written by Charles Dickens (Long and Drawn out, never-ending)

Thats SL... some sort of crazy cross-blending between Daniel Steele and Charles Dickens.

ShadowRun: Secrets of Power by Robert N. Charette

"Riding the Torch" by Norman Spinrad.

It is set in Outer Space, but if ever there was a "spot on" description of SL society mores, motivations, and possible future evolution, this is it.

Written before the Lindens were a glint in their collective fathers' eyes.

Hard slog at the beginning though, most of the characters are vain and unsympathetic.
Familiar?

:)
