From the Hotline forum, buried under the deluge of "I CAN"T SIGN IN OMGWTFLOLGIVEMEMONEY" posts: From: Robin Linden The word 'key' is a bit of a misnomer, as it suggests that there is something to be unlocked.
Agent IDs can be collected simply by putting scripts on your land to harvest them, or wearing a script and standing in the welcome area, etc. Agent IDs act like a phone number, but beyond that don't give any information about who you are. Simply listing agent IDs is no different than a phone book listing.
What is a problem is if someone were to use the IDs to spam everyone. But if that were to happen, we would know where the spam came from and under the Terms of Service would be legitimately able to remove that person from SL.

From: wuvme Karuna Hey cris hun

Help me.. i wuv ya!!! LOL Dearest Wuvme, A key is a code that uniquely identifies your avatar - it is an internal ID number that is used by the database. Many script functions that can interact with an avatar - to send an IM, to send an item, when a user clicks on something or sits on something or comes near...all these things use the key, not the avatar name. Also, when you buy something on a site like SLExchange or SLBoutique, when it sends the item to you, it needs to have your key to do so (that is why you had to go a terminal the first time and link your avatar - so that it could detect your key). As more and more stuff is created that needs to use keys, it becomes convenient to not force people to have to go to some centralized place to give their key. People have created giant databases of keys for this purpose, but some people become quite irate about this. I asked Robin how Linden Lab's feels about this at the Town Hall meeting, and the answer she gave is above.

Wow, logins are working, and rational thought rules the day (well, as much as rational thought has ever had any impact on SL... let's hope we never get *too* rational!). I will personally be on the pitchforks and torches mob for the first person to ever attempt to spam. I'm fairly certain LL's threshold controls (like when they ask me what I was doing passing out wallets through a script... after passing only about, I believe, 600 items) will keep this under wraps. SPAMMERS... you will be caught, punished, and your remains will be fed to the monster that lives in the Linden Lab data center if you ever abuse this! Regards, -Flip

Excellent! I can finally get the visions of the FBI kicking in my door for DCMA violations out my head. I imagined trying to explain what a caesar code was to jack-booted monkey standing on my neck using one arm to apply the cuffs while the other sprayed me at point-blank range with pepper spray. What can I say? I have an active imagination. I would like to invite those who have not yet submitted name.cache files, to submit them here and those with precompiled lists to send them to me by email (Ulrika.Zugzwang at gmail.com). So far, it's the only open UUID database with a functioning opt-out system. Naturally, I encourage those who are interested to fork this data for their own creative ideas. No permission is necessary. ~Ulrika~

Alexa Alexa, She is under no obligation at all to take it off. However, if you visit the site, you have the ability to do so yourself.

Now that I know what they are, I can judge what I want. In RL I have signed onto the Do-not-call lists so I don't have idiots calling me during dinner. But in the game... Eh, who cares? If they are getting annoying, I'll just report 'em and go on with life. As long as you can't use it to do more than just contact me, I don't care.

From: Pendari Lorentz hehe.. j/k I only used perfume in my fantasy, not pepper spray I knew it tasted more like flowers and less like peppers! Good response and position from LL! I like how spam in SL is not annonymous(sp, if I spelt that right I'm lucky).

That's actually a great point, Oz.
The reason spam is such a hard thing to stop is anyone can set up a mail server and send it anonymously. In SL, that's simply not possible. If it becomes any kind of major problem, a policy can be developed saying something like, YOU SPAM, WE MAX OUT YOUR CREDIT CARD! Okay, that'll never happen, but you get my point.
A valid email, name, address and credit card are required to sign up. None of these things are true for spammers, who can simply set up an email server anywhere in the world and start cranking out UCE.
Regards,
-Flip

From: someone Like a phone number, eh?
Well then...where's the do-not-call list, and I'd like mine unlisted please What Newfie said. I personally am not going to bother to go to a site to be registered with my information even more fully (ROFL) in order to undue my key number in that list LOL. I don't care about it THAT much. But I care about someone like Newfie having the right to get off that list. The Lindens can't be everywhere at once. Spam need not take the crass form of one idiot sending out 1000 notecards in a huge key blast. It could be done more slowly over time and be less detectible. I'd also like to ask about the consumer/business information that is gathered that enables groups of players with the most time/energy/technology to gain an advantage in the closed-circuit, closed-society of the game. I imagine information about sales, purchases, telehub activity, peak shopping times per day, etc. are all gathered using these keys and other data. That's normal. Again, the operative question is: what's the use made of it in the context of this game, however? Let me remind you of the recently restated policy on making personal attacks as you read this. Let me urge you to refrain from posting pictures of dogs with tinfoil hats. Let me point out that my questioning of those who are caching this data, whatever their Linden support, is to question its potential for *misuse,* not its intended use. I understand what it is, just as I understand the difference between IP and ISP. Given the bad will often demonstrated in-game on on-forum, it's natural for any consumer to ask about the misuse of the data before the use even, given the rarified circumstances of this game.

Ulrika, FBI is a US agency, and DMCA is a US law. (If I'm right) you're not in the US nor you are a US citizen, so it shouldn't matter much to you.

I do not understand any of this. Please don't bother to explain it to me! It's one of those complex things that would take the Cocobrain too long to understand and it wouldn't be worth it. I just want to go on record as saying I have no idea what any of you are talking about, despite reading all the threads pertaining to it. coco

Sorry, no sale. You aren't interested in misuse of data. You're just looking for another way to attack someone else you don't like. ObTopic: Great post, Cris. Sorry you have to put up with the libel and maliciousness of the terminally ignorant.

From: someone Sorry, no sale. You aren't interested in misuse of data. You're just looking for another way to attack someone else you don't like. Actually, you're wrong about that. I've always liked Cristiano and found him intelligent, thoughtful, attractive, and kind almost to a fault. Cristiano has many, many in-world and on-forum positive, attractive features. From the first moment I found Cristiano by googling him when I found he already had a publication called "Second Thoughts" which I had taken independently as my blog name, I knew we were destined to be soul mates. I visited his websites regularly to read interesting material about the game, and whenver I do actions and events in the game like "Moth Swarm" I always urge everyone to upload their pictures to Snapzilla because I think it actually gets a lot more airtime and views than LL. But I do disagree with him on the forums. And I do have generic questions about the potential misuse of personal information. So sure, I have a temporary dispute with him about this matter which I imagine will blow over in time, who knows. He's rather persistent -- nay, stubborn -- about making his views known, as am I. I've made my statements not to kill him, but to raise legitimate issues. I'm sure he'll come to appreciate it some day. I have other, unrelated disagreements with him, i.e. on the Land Sales and private island deeds issue. I don't like what he did on that issue, I thought it was wrong and them motivations squirrely. But like a good Catholic, I separate the sin from the sinner. Cristiano's sterling character stands alone and shines through the ages, despite this or that bad deed, including to me Cristiano Midnight continues to be my hero because he is willing to think -- most of the time. A rare quality in our world.
