I want to run SL on TRS-DOS.

But seriously, they have to draw a line someplace. I'd rather have them working on making a Linux client instead of working on historical compatibility.

I feel sorry for people that are stuck with WinME (or 98 even!) and genuinely can't upgrade to XP for some reason. I don't feel sorry for them because they can't play SL though - they've got much bigger problems than that.

At the risk of sounding like a criminal, I just hacked the client onto my favourite OS.

Oh, come on! Everyone knows that an Etch-a-sketch has only the top of the line OS.. and it's more reliable than ME on its best day!

How do I know this? I've managed to keep Windows ME running for almost two years without updates or reinstalls! (It's now the kid's comp) I've had to reinstall XP at least once!

(Boggles the logic and then realizes it's an inside joke) If it's the buggiest, easily broken thing in the world, I will run it.. and without any problems. If it's supposed to be reliable, I kill it within a month.

For the record, I've replaced my etch-a-sketch at least 15 times in the last year!!!

Do you think they could also make an emulator so SL could run on my Donkey Kong tabletop machine? kthnxbye

Yes but you'd be very severly violating the TOS when you accessed it.

But seriously, WinME won't run SL because it lacks several key features that SL makes use of. Unicode font support, for one.

To get SL to run on older versions of Windows, they'd need to come up with some sort of special font rendering system specifically for older versions. This would be very time consuming.

For Linden Lab to invest the time necessary to force SL to run on WinME, they would need to expect that the benefit to both SL and their bottom line from extending support to Win95/98/Me systems would outweigh the benefits they could expect to see from continuing to work on bugs and adding new features.

In short, while it's possible that it could be done, the number of potential users running older versions of Windows and whose computers meet the minimum specifications is extremely low. Far lower, in fact, than the potential number of Linux users.

The Radio Shack TRS-80 would work great. It would take up a lot of tapes though.

That's nothing.

I hear the user server is actually Phoenix Linden in a closet with big stacks of parchment and an inkwell. ;)

Wrong. Its a little monkey in a box with a stack of stone tablets and a chisel. Good, solid Flintstones technology! :D

Tru, I hope you're not taking any of this personally. :) The bottom line is that you should really think seriously about upgrading your system to XP. You'll be very happy that you did. Every month you keep using a win98 based system, the lower the percentage of new software you'll be able to run. I know it can be expensive to upgrade, but if you've gotten five years out of a system that's much longer than average and you can probably get at least that much use out of your next one... and the performance difference between it and what you're used to will be huge (in a very good way).

That's not a Lite Brite, it's Felecia standing in front of her cottage near the Bashi fortress.

It's truly amazing what you can do with a 4mb video card.
