I'm taking a moment to mention the concept of 'Corporate Sponsorship'. Since nearly all software/television/etc companies that use ads claim they do it 'to be offer the customer quality service at a lower price', does this mean our monthly tier costs are going to drop? - Newfie ![]() ![]() _____________________

I eagerly await our swoosh-bearing overlords from Nike®. Just think how cool it would be to virtually pretend to eat a Big Mac® from McDonalds® or to test market RJReynolds® "Lucky Tokes" Brand Tobacco-Free Cigarettes. This post made me smile. I don't think it's impending doom that big players will get involved. I mean they are going to have to hire someone to build/script stuff for them ![]() _____________________

You know what I"m looking forward to. The day that I can create an avatar that is an exact model of my RL self (weight, height, coloring, etc.), and then to walk into a shop in world, try on clothing and see exactly how it will look on my RL self. Then be able to buy that outfit in world and have it shipped to me in RL. ![]() Id rather it were the other way around - my AV is like a size 4 , lol. Id love for my RL self to lose weight with a slider - instead of Weight Watchers =p. ------------------------------------------------------ Seriously though RL advertizing in SL is a good thing - ANY money that comes into Second Life and to Linden Labs that doesnt have to come from Users pockets - is good for the sucess of Second Life. |

I admit i've always thought this an inevitability. SL may have a small population, but it's an attractive target market set, and a group of people highly plugged into pop culture and trends. (I say this because I am totally UNHIP, and yet through SL I see and discover things (music, internet fads, prob clothing trends) that my RL friends and colleagues don't register for months). There will no doubt be people who would happily be paid to walk around wearing a Sprite T-shirt. I think it can be done in a relatively stable and not-overly-intrusive way, but Linden Lab will need to be careful here though. Without restrictions, greed often leads to an abuse of "public commons". By this I'm picturing a sky filled with dirigibles with flashing textures reading Coke! Hertz! Burger King! and the roads clogged with vans with 40 meter x 40 meter logos. Such a thing would lead to a backlash, both on LL and on the advertisers (so it's in their interest to tread carefully, but not all advertisers will). /me starts thinking about Blade Runner again... Yeah - I really did not address advertising on the main grid in the form of bill boards or sky filled dirigibles but I really hope that this does not happen (we have this already with just SL residents). Turning that over to corporate is where it really will become "in your face" and that's when I have to agree with Bill Hicks. That's when SL becomes like my car radio, intolerable. _____________________

SL has always had several built-in defense mechanisms to RL advertising.
The first, of course, is avoidance. The second would be simply competing fiercely with the interlopers. Oh, I see Nike set up a store in Grignano. Please notice the Sonic Kicks store next door, advertising heavily, and selling for half price. We have the power to push back here, we always have. It's just that most folks don't, for whatever reason. Have faith, we can beat any sort of annoying advertising, if only by sheer mob violence. LF _____________________

Oh joy. more advertising in my life. What will be next the Nike sim? You know, if they bought their own sim and set it up as NikeLand, that would be fine and dandy... so long as they kept all their corporate mindrot off the main grid. But that's not the way I envision it happening. First there will be adverts on the telehubs, then there will be billboards all over the place (my prediction is that One Landbaron makes smaller than 512 plots available for sale/rent in every sim for this purpose), then it will get more and more in your face until it is ubiquitous. -Ghoti _____________________

Basically: Benchmark saw the writing on the wall and forced fleck onto Philip. Fleck is changing the world around This is the new world: SL isn't a game, advertising, taking over GOM, monetizing residents, developer lists, etc etc It's sad, but really, SL had to grow up. IMO that is the "old" or current SL that "isn't a game". All the rest of it is what is currently turning it into a crappy game. Here's and interesting scenario perhaps: "Sprite" machines (like in the article) come to SecondLife. As in RL lots of folks hate these things and procede to vandalise the machines. What happens to the avatar? Slap on the wrist? What if Sprite gets upset about it? Remember they are likely a multimillion dollar investor in LL at that point. Seems to me this will affect game play. ![]() New Linden Motto: A 100% user created world (except some users are corporations), that allows one to be as creative as one wants to be (as long as the advertisers agree it's okay), the possibilities are endless (as long as you keep your place). _____________________

If corps start getting people banned for expressing their dislike about their shitty products, I'll lead the suicide charge in world to vandalize every possibly RL commercial entity within my view.
On the flipside, though... A Sprite Ad to me is the same as a "Drink Linden Cola" ad, except probably snazzier and slicker. A Nike Swoosh is the same as an AnsheCorp sign. Etc. It's all advertisement vying for your eyeballs. No one's reaching for Rathe's head on a stick for running MetaAdverse. Have you SEEN how many of those are around? it's nuts. No one's noticed, though. Traditional advertising doesn't really work here, methinks. LF _____________________

Have faith, we can beat any sort of annoying advertising, if only by sheer mob violence. I agree. If anything I think we can strengthen in-world brand names. It might also help make the jump from SL to RL for some people. Imagine when Nike realizes that people actually prefer "Sonic Kicks", maybe they will buy the designs outright. _____________________

As someone who may or may not happen to work at Wells Fargo, and may or may not be there RIGHT NOW posting from work, and may or may not spend many lunch breaks reading the forums...
I would like to personally appologise for possibly helping alert one of the nation's largest banking companies to the existance of the metaverse, and possibly ushering in the infocalypse. I hate it when I do that. And, yes, at least they bought a private sim and aren't being uuber-obtrusive... I just wish they would have put this money into their employee's bonus structure instead ;P Edit > Hell, they didn't buy a private sim... it's an entirely different grid... Now I _really_ wish they would have instead pumped the money into the employee bonus structure!!! ![]() _____________________

Would big corporations really participate in SL advertising if their ads were limited to a small hut on an isolated ad-only sim? (a real question for anyone who knows more about this than I do)
I doubt it. Seems they'd only get involved if they new thousands of players were going to see their brand. Which probably means telehubs, paying club owners (or building their own), mall owners and whole hemispheres textured in a brand. Welcome to NikeSim. We swoosh, therefore, we are! Welcome to StagecoachSim. We offer a direct deposit of your RL paycheck directly to your LL account. It's that easy! O _____________________

Be the change. Remeber, the product is you. This post has been brought to you by the nice people at Exxon® who are awfully sorry about that little whoopsie in Alaska but have started an internal "Friends Don't Let Friends Captain a Supertanker Drunk" and ask "do you really care about a quarter million animals that you weren't ever going to see anyway?" ![]() |

What if -
You could get a couple of corporate sponsors to put up billboards or pop-ups at your island entrance telehub, in exchange for which you get the rest of the island to play with for free? Would you do it? _____________________

... I am less worried about advertising than I am about sponsored builds. Right now, when I look around our world I get a sense of excitement and inspiration knowing that everything I see is user-created - and most often for the sheer joy of creative expression. The moment that large corporations step in and begin to pay large teams of designers to build content this entire place will change forever. Do I even want to try to create clothing or cars if I know that I will have to compete with paid professional desigers? ... Paid professional designer likely don't have the freedom to create whatever they want, you could still create things that are original and therefore attractive. _____________________

So what exactly changes for the average resident when the object in question goes from being made by someone who is using a corporation's brand for their own purposes to reverting back to the proper owner of the brand? |

Mal. That Exxon ad is trying to put a cookie on my comp. You may want to upload the image as an attachment rather than the direct link you are using: http://www.exxon.com/images/homepage_exxon_logo.gif

... It's all advertisement vying for your eyeballs. No one's reaching for Rathe's head on a stick for running MetaAdverse. Have you SEEN how many of those are around? it's nuts....No one's noticed, though. The number of times I have been half-ressed somewhere and inadvertently touched one of those horrid MetaAdverse signs, recieving a notecard, a location marker, a whisper and all that other unwanted crap is sad indeed. I can hardly wait for giant spinning cubes covered with web-based flash ads over every building and mountain, with sound! ![]() Remember there are no actual laws in SL, certainly nothing about advertising standards. And with LL doing everything it can lately (IMO) to destroy whatever social feeling we have for each other and disable social controls on behaviour, methinks every corner of the world will look like Times Square in practically no-time at all. All the laws that in RL protect us (or try to) from aggressive or unethical advertising do not apply here. Conventional wisdom says we don't have a lot of Ads now because we haven't been "discovered" in that sense, or because our market is perhaps to small to bother with for the time being. Once that changes however (and it certainly will), why would advertisers not exploit this place to the fullest extent the (complete lack of) regulations allow? ![]() Cost to hypothetical corporation to cover SL with animated "in your face" ads? ... maybe 500 bucks US, Return on their investment? ... advertising to (at that time) maybe 10 or 20,000 people of a very particular and very lucrative demographic. Sounds like a no-brainer to me if you are a heartless imoral corporation. ![]() Unless the Lindens reverse course a bit (please, please please), it seems to me that SL will ultimately become that dream world that all the born-again free marketers out there long for (but that has never really existed in RL). A completely unfettered, no rules, capitalist market, with no government interference (cause there is no government) and with corporate entities having all the rights that citizens do. Whos needs do you think will come first in an environment like that? The people or Pepsi? ![]() One can pratically smell the drool on certain peoples lips, but I dont personally look forward to it. ... Traditional advertising doesn't really work here, methinks. _____________________
