Dear Second Life,
I tried to go sightseeing in the island sims today, but it was a crapshoot. I found that quite a few of them revolve around shopping/clubbing/f*** shacks, but these are not really good candidates for sightseeing. Help me find island sims that have atmosphere!
Bad Example: Sim composed mainly of shopping/casinos/clubs/sex boxes in the sky. Take your pick, there are zillions of these and I don't want to go to any of them!
Good Example: City of Tharna. Part of a small Gorean continent. There are some shops/adult themes, but the place is full of atmosphere. Great place to take a stroll, lots of little paths going everywhere, good texturing. (Just avoid any solitary couples out in the woods...)

Telador and the Fairchang Islands come to mind. I believe the Crescent Moon museum is now a part of the Fairchang Islands (in Montmatre).
No listing of reasons would do them any justice. Just just... see them. Now.

You're welcome to come visit my land on Ataraxis island which I rent from Hiro Queso. No shoes, no house, just a spa, a bar and chill out seating. Also no malls or clubs are allowed on the island which is brilliant.

the pot healer adventure's sim is really nice... so is spittoonie island, but not what it sounds like you're looking for... search for Liferain mountain though, it's not an entire sim, but it's REALLY nice, still under construction though. Have you been to Chicago yet?

Baron Grayson's Sanctum Sanctorum is simply amazing. Its the first island I really spent a lot of time exploring every nook and cranny of. The guy is an astounding texturer and really has a beautiful vision for his work.

I think Atlantis is still my favorite island sim. Beautiful, very fast, and under 100 scripts(at least it was like that last time I was there) on the whole island, and plenty to explore.

I think E-city and Rue d'Alliez have atmosphere. At least ithey're well built and maintained.
For non-commercials that haven't been mentioned, I like to wander around Serenite and Sanctum Sanctorui.

Faded Reality Island - Chicago 1900's lots to see and figure out, very little shopping feel free to pick up a suit or a flapper dress in the telehub for 10 linden or a tommy gun also 10 linden. We built Chicago 1900's as a fun experience, one that everyone could afford to enjoy. lol don't miss the linden tomb!

No listing of reasons would do them any justice. Just just... see them. Now. Oceana is well worth the visit, it is comprised of:
Montemarte, the home of the Crescent Moon museum amongst other wonderful builds. Athena, the newest to attach and just held the 'build a musical instrument' contest. FairChang Island, a mostly water sim where you can sail around at your leisure FairChang Project, where the Touchstone group is holding their fair and home to the recent "Dunk the Linden Day"
Oceana is always open to visit, we never go invisible or private.

Neualtenburg was moved to an island Sim. Much is already back in place. The summary on the architecture: "The city is modeled after a medieval Bavarian city with postmodern architectural elements in the private sim of Neualtenburg. Most of SL is based upon the precepts of modern architecture, where land and buildings are dominated by the rectangle. One of the goals of this project is to create a city which replaces orthogonality with organic and brings together the medieval and modern"

Seconded, Numbakulla and Sanctum Sanctorum... both places I've been many times and taken many snaps of. Gypsy Moon is also really pretty.... lots of fascinating places to wander around and explore, lots of beautiful little hidden spots to take pictures of. I need to go back to Fairchang again... I always enjoy looking at the boats there and riding around on the chairlift thing.

Give us another week and Vida de Sol (soon to have a name change) will have some wonderful atmosphere (I hope). Or come out now and see which direction we are going and give me your constructive criticism.

I'ts not my cup of tea theme wise but Port Kar is really well done. The textures are great and there's a very cool, scripted fighting arena thing.

I continue to think the sims of Ravenglass and Carlisle provide a lot of beauty and atmosphere from Foolish Frost's and Margot Abbatoir's builds, and then Lee1 Olsen's builds in the next sim over in Honister. Also Maryport on both sides of the road and Alston. I love to walk or fly around the whole area.
A'ksha Dunes and A'ksha Oasis which Anshe created on the private sims are very uniquely terraformed and have some beautiful builds by Satu Moreau and Kavai Onizuka.

Gah! There's so many places I have yet to see!!!! I really, really need to get out more. I've yet to visit most of these islands. Besides, I gotta pay the panther girls another visit in the forests near Port Kar.

I really like this thread because I can check on any atmospheric islands I might have missed.
In addition...
TACO has a pleasant surreal atmosphere all its own, and you can't miss Dwellget -- a real department store! -- and Mo' Dwell 6.
L'UTOPIE by Sky Everett is beautiful place with loads of atmosphere, mainly in the form of beautiful furniture you can buy. It fits so well in with the surroundings.
VERLOREN and VERANDERDE are great representations of sort of an old-world European feel, despite the big jarring rent signs.
TELADOR ISLE is an oldie but goodie, and you may be able to relate to it more if you're familiar with the Myst series.
The new MIDNIGHT CITY ISLAND, when open to the public, will definitely be a promising cityscape with a sort of future-noir feel (unless what I've already seen completely deteriorates... how unlikely is that). I got a strange Blade Runner/Deus Ex vibe from it.
There's got to be more!

Visit the "moon" sims, Gypsy Moon & Dragon Moon. After an extended time away from building I have returned to the Gypsy Moon project, so make sure you stop by to visit!

From: someone Island sims? Yes Ravenglass has an island and Honister has islands, and Carlisle has an artificial island. They're pretty. Islands on the mainland grid deserve a look-see too.
