Amazing Chinatown

I was supposed to wait for Torley before visiting Chinatown so that she could show me around, but an opportunity presented itself. I just couldn't wait any longer. Curse my impatience! I hope she isn't too upset with me. :o

Philip Linden himself asked me if I'd had a chance to take a look at the project. It's so breathtaking, Philip said that it made him want to rethink the graphics engine.

I had to see it, so Foxy tped me there this morning. The Bedazzle team is becoming known for its members' ability to break new ground in the realm of graphical effects within Second Life. The first thing I noticed when I arrived at Chinatown was the reflection of the scenery in the rain puddles that filled the street. This is something that the Second Life client can't do by itself. You have to think of ways around its limitations in order to create certain stunning effects like this. That's what the Bedazzle team does. :)

Chinatown is the setting for the upcoming SL Unreal project that will debut in February. Foxy tells me that she is looking for members of the community who would support the project by coordinating original events to take place on February 11th, 12th, and 13th, as independent parts of a larger, unified festival. Event ideas need to be approved by Dreams Lightcloud. If you want to run through Chinatown for inspiration, I'm sure that Foxy would be happy to give you a tour.

When Linden Lab announces festivals, the community responds to build sculptures, design carnival rides, or what have you. It's time for us to support one of our own, and show Linden Lab what we're capable of doing without their official leadership. Please ask Foxy or Dreams for a tour, and let us organize a successful grand opening event for an amazing project!

Original thread asking for volunteers.

And that's exactly what you see when you visit. The reflections and all were not photoshopped in there.

Ho lee MO lee!

I bow, kow tow, lay my head on the pavement in awe and homage. This is amazing work. The creators of this truly live on a higher plane, not only to imagine so clearly but then to be able to share that vision.

*applauds*

Arrrrrghhhh it's so fucking amazing! *squeezes head to keep it from exploding*

I haven't seen it up close but I want to so bad. Oh well. I get my fix by visiting the art gallery. :D

Wow... I mean, really wow! I hope that level of quality is evident from all angles; not just the one the shot was taken from.

I've seen that level of graphic quality in First-Person Shooters and such; but *never* in an MMO... And the fact that its been "hacked" in by 3rd parties really speaks to the abilities of those folks!

I guess its official - I *have* to upgrade my video card ASAP. :D

Take care,

OMG...Chinatown is absolutely INCREDIBLE. I got to check it out when Darko went over to see it a week ago. Foxy and her team are just so talented. I applaud Jimmy and Foxy on the beautiful work they have brought to SL. LOVE IT!!

Bah! You talented people! They're already making reflections?! I just figured out how to make shadows under my fan. I will catch up to you one day!

I can't wait to see it! :)

It's okay hon. *hugz*

Foxy "Bubble-licious" Xevious and Jimmy "Texturemaster" Thomson are nice people who also happen to be talented. Chinatown is one of my faves. I am openly biased, and the reflections are such a thrill. The ambience, complete with environmental sound effects, really reminds me of my childhood hanging out at noodle stalls and waiting for my parents to get done shopping. In SL, I am Asian-Avatarian, and having a place like this inworld really reawakens fond (and not-so-fond, including a certain occasion involving pig's feet) memories of my youth.

Marcos is right... WHERE BE LO PAN? ;) (Hey, anyone have an av of that dastardly sorcerer...) I'd also like to jump from the rooftops of buildings: NOT in a "commit suicide" way, but in something akin to The Matrix or Dark City. The whole vibe I get is so fresh and funky yet it's an ancient Chinese secret to boot as well. I still wanna see rickshaws tho... oh puleeze, puleeze. Would be fun to drag those rickies down to the skate park below and ride 'em to Shanghai Noon.

YAYZERAMA BEDAZZLE! :D

Wow. That's cool! Tell me, someone, do I have to have "Shiny Objects" on in preferences to see it as nice as it looks in the picture? Because mine is unavailable for selecting due to the video card, I assume.

Either way. Nice work. Wish Chinatown had looked more like that pic when I was living in 'Frisco. :D

*I* had shiny turned on, however, the reflections do not depend on that setting. :)
