A night to remember. If you had a chance to attend the U2 Concert at Dragon Moon tonight it was in one word --- AMAZING. From the sets/stage built by Demian Caldera to the attention to set detail and the avatars by DarkDharma Daguerre and the beautiful island venue courtesy of Nyna Slate -- the event was first class. I hear there was a host of others also helping that I don't even know to mention. For a glimpse of the concert check out my postcards at Snapzilla --- www.sluniverse.comI am proud of you all. CONGRATS!!!! I can't wait for a repeat performance. ~Liv

This was a most excellent event. Thanks to all involved. This is such a fine example of what Second Life can be. It was indeed the next best thing to actually attending a U2 concert in RL - maybe better, considering my computer chair could afford me the best seats in the house.

Yes, *wink* it was Bono-approved. And a lovely lass you are, Roseann! Was a pleasure chatting with you and other fans after our concert. And, thank you, one and all, for coming out to show your support of One.org to help Make Poverty History. It's our moment, our time, our chance. We're not looking for charity, we're looking for justice. We can't fix every problem, but the ones we can - we must.
The Edge, Adam, Larry and I hope to see you and everyone at our next gig in SL!

I don't understand... was this a u2 involved event or was it just some avatars dancing to streamed music?

From: Kathmandu Gilman I don't understand... was this a u2 involved event or was it just some avatars dancing to streamed music? Hiya Kath, This was a concert with all the trimmings as best as it could be done in SL given the limitations here. We had all the concert trappings including a U2 concert stream, specially-designed highly detailed stage, custom changing backdrops, lights, concessions, etc., along with avatars of the U2 band members who "performed" the concert, so it was a bit more involved than just dancing to streamed music! And, most importantly, all this is being offered free to the SL community, and for a good cause: ONE.ORG and MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY.ORG. Please see one of my original posts for more on what it's all about: /invalid_link.htmlThanks for asking! DarkDharma Daguerre

Although I think Nyna, Demian and you did an INCREDIBLE job with this, DarkDharma, and I'm very disappointed that I had RL guests and I couldn't attend, I do beg to differ with your statement "concert...as best as it could be done in SL." This was, after all, a prerecorded U2 concert, streamed out with avatars acting as the U2 band members. As you know, one CAN perform an actual LIVE concert in SL, if one gets a band together and streams it out, preferably with a laptop next to each musician so they can read and respond to the in-world audience. I think Singer Tyne is planning to do a live show with her band, and at least two viewers (her husband CdSpinner is in world with her), and I hopefully will in the future if I can get the musicans and gear together in my studio. You probably won't get U2 in world, but you can get live performers, and in my opinion, that's a concert event that's beyond what you guys did - which all the same was very cool and certainly top of its class, and demonstrated that SL can support a highly-produced concert, without actually having the live performance. You can take this as my regular skrieg regarding live performance. It's still SERIOUSLY lacking in SL, and I will tirelessly remind musicians, actors, poets, rappers, etc. out there to get a microphone, talk to Jamie Otis about streaming, and PERFORM LIVE IN SECOND LIFE!

after searching my best, i can not find a definitive answer anywhere i look.
just straight question and answer for the sanity of all who are curious.
Re: U2 in SL
was the RL band "U2" aware of the "U2 in SL" performance?

- Newfie Hi Newfie, Several things I wish to clarify: We are “U2 in SL”-- NOT the real U2. We state that in all our posts announcing events. There is no copyright on the term, “U2 in SL” nor, actually, is the letter/number, “U2” copyrighted. In addition, you must be aware from our other posts that we charge nothing and make nothing from any part of this role play--we do it to highlight a cause. And, speaking of “role play”, certainly you have heard of real world celebrity impersonators and tribute bands? What we do is nothing more than a combination of that in avatar form using streamed music. Finally, regarding the music, last we knew, streaming music was allowed in SL and wasn’t something that warranted artist’s approval. And if that is not so, then that would mean every club owner would need to seek approval for every song they stream. Thanks for your concern! DarkDharma

was the RL band "U2" aware of the "U2 in SL" performance? Yes, we have been in contact with Principle Management (U2's organization) and they are aware of our endeavor. DarkDharma

DarkDharma, let me further clarify my reason for asking. i don't want you to think i'm trying to shed a spotlight on some imagined evil.. quite the opposite. i think a joint venture would be more effective and making that fact more high profile could draw more attention in both the RL and SL ends. imagine if we could get the real U2 to visit SL? and such a thing being recorded as a video that could be streamed on U2's web site? or having a 'U2 inSL' performance shown on a big screen during a U2 concert? _ ...time passes... - well, i've lost my train of thought.. but basically, you get the idea.

From: DarkDharma Daguerre Hi Newfie,
Several things I wish to clarify: We are “U2 in SL”-- NOT the real U2. We state that in all our posts announcing events. I looked at the posts. If it's stated, it's worded to be very unclear if it's actually the band 'U2' (which btw would make the name a trademark, not copyright) or if it's a group that is imitating the real band. From: someone There is no copyright on the term, “U2 in SL” nor, actually, is the letter/number, “U2” copyrighted. See my line above. From: someone In addition, you must be aware from our other posts that we charge nothing and make nothing from any part of this role play--we do it to highlight a cause. And, speaking of “role play”, certainly you have heard of real world celebrity impersonators and tribute bands? The act of making money or not does not by itself constitute infringing on another's copyrighted material. It might add to the case if you were, but just because you're doing so 'for free' or 'for a good cause' does not give one free rights. From: someone What we do is nothing more than a combination of that in avatar form using streamed music. Finally, regarding the music, last we knew, streaming music was allowed in SL and wasn’t something that warranted artist’s approval. SL may allow music streams, but that does not imply that means the stream is a legal one. If you play infringing material in SL - or anywhere else for that matter - it needs to be done in a manner that has either been permitted by the copyright owner (which btw is Island Records), and/or used in what's defined as a legal fair use. From: someone And if that is not so, then that would mean every club owner would need to seek approval for every song they stream. I am sure the RIAA would be happy to do exactly that if they had the resources and time. As the saying goes - 'if all your friends hit themselves in the head with a hammer, would you too?' In short, I don't know if this type of event is legal or not, my guess is that it's very deep into the gray zone. But in either case it's been my experience that all postings and threads about 'U2 in SL' come across as extremely vague in identifying if 'U2 in SL' is genuinely associated/permitted/approved/etc with the real band U2 or not. At the very least I would suggest a more specific wording, because as it is right now, it certain can come across as a role-playing group who is using the U2 name to benefit themselves. - Newfie

From: Newfie Pendragon At the very least I would suggest a more specific wording, because as it is right now, it certain can come across as a role-playing group who is using the U2 name to benefit themselves.- Newfie Benefit themselves? Excuse me...how does that benefit themselves? The people behind the project don't benefit in any way! Quite the opposite. They all spent alot of time since many months with planing and creating, they spent money, and gain nothing from it but lots of fun and awareness for a cause! They don't even tell who's behind the U2 in SL avatars, if they are alts and whos alts they are etc. So how can that benefit themselves. They come out for events, and are not around in SL otherwise. So it's not about showing off and getting fat heads petted or to take advantage of any popularity. The same applies to the people who thought this up and created things for the events. I'm one of them and so are DarkDharma and Dream Daguerre and Nyna Slate. We don't waste a thought about if this will benefit us, actually we don't fucking care! We are in it for the FUN and in it to make poverty history! And to give U2 fans in SL some musical treats. So all this was done to raise awareness for a cause and to bring some entertainment to SL! The concert was recorded by a visitor of the U2 concert in Boston in May, and U2 endorses recordings and photos of their shows! The recorded concert (the mp3 files) is neither sold nor given away to anybody either. I'm wondering what's going on with people who can't just enjoy a great event and support a good cause, without crying foul and asking the same questions over and over again. So I say it again! YES, U2's management, Principle Management in Dublin, is aware of the project and so are ONE.org and DATA.org. I'll be in Dublin next week, maybe I should go and convince Paul McGuinness to sign up for SL and come to the forum and tell all those who keep asking...that it IS okay what we are doing? </sarcasm> Believe me, those guys have better things to do than to worry about pixel look-alikes who stream their music and roleplay along. And after this day's news from London, maybe we all notice that indeed there is much more in this world to worry about than about what's going on in a virtual world? My heart goes out to the people in the UK! Demian
