Hmmm lets see, I have purple hair and tanned skin, not sure what race that makes me. I just like to think that i'm part of the pixel race. Yes that's it! :p

Also black hair is easier to match up hair attachments and most blonde hair looks green under most lighting I had red for a long time and got tired of the 2 hrs to match up a new hair style

I'm blonde, doesn't look green to me

I tried to match my RL skin tone. Which was dumb of me because everyone is so tan and now I am jealous, it made me pause and think for a second when I passed that tanning salon on my way to work in real life LOL

From: someone
As a side note, why do so many skins for medium to dark tan skin make the highlights on the skin orange based? It looks like the avatars have scurvy. It creeps me out!

Thats a really interesting point Cris, and it is a growing RL trend. It has to go with chemical tanning and it's popularity, and some of the dangers involved.

From: someone
Steer clear of tanning pills and tanning accelerators, says the FDA. Tanning pills contain carotenoids, the same substances that give carrots their orange color; when taken internally, they are distributed throughout the body and skin, making the skin orange. The high levels of carotenoids contained in the pills cause damage to the eyes, impairing vision.

From: someone
Fake tanning products include an active chemical called dihydroxyacetone (DHA) that works by staining the skin on a temporary basis.

If you're applying fake tan yourself, remember to follow the instructions carefully and try to achieve an even look. Thankfully, many products are easy to use and don't make you look orange or streaky by the end.

From: someone
DHA was discovered as a skin-coloring agent in the 1920s and appeared commercially in the 1960s. Unfortunately, some of the first over-thecounter products left consumers with streaks, splotches and orange skin. These cosmetic problems, as well as an unpleasant odor from the DHA, left a bad taste in some of the public’s mouth.

However, the Food and Drug Administration added DHA to its list of approved cosmetic ingredients in the 1970s. Afterward, cosmetic companies began to refine the process to ditch the orange skin coloration for a more healthy looking brown. As the refining process evolves, companies continue to produce higher-quality, more predictable sunless products that provide a more naturallooking, golden tan.

Unfortunately MANY of the chemical (fake) tanning solutions from 1-3 years ago really give the skin a more orangish look especially if your light / fair skinned to begin with.

Now, considering a lot of the skins are photosourced, and considering it's growing popularity... I would guess that would explain some of the "orangish" tans you see in SL.

Even a lot of the cheaper tanning solutions today give you a sort of orangish look and not a brown tan.

So, between photosourcing images into skins and from 1-3 years ago, that orangish tan looking "good" (as opposed to fair skin) I think thats why a lot of the tan skins you see are more orangish than brown.

The articles say that a lot of the "orangish" skin color has been "virtually eliminated" but, in practice I am not so sure, a lot of actresses still look "orangish". There was even a program on style (a cable TV channel I like to watch sometimes) about this very thing.

I am not sure if I stayed on track with that post or not. I confused myself somewhere in there.

I haven't seen any racism in SL, beyond stupid griefing symbols that were posted earlier on the forums.

Well, I personaly don't judge anyone. Because with all the armor. bots, mech suits, cuddly cute avatsr.. etc that I have, it isn't just black and white anymore.. we have many different countries in attendance. Many different ethnicities. Embrace them! Why? I told you to!

Seriously though, I see every walk of life chatting with each other regularly. Nobody has ever been excluded.

Heck, my regular use ava is a tanned caucasion guy, none overly muscular or anything.. and I walked right into a heavy metal goth bar last night, and besides some teasing to break me in, even though there was a clash in style, there were still people of many skin types there, having fun, dancing away, listening to the same music. ;)

There is an alternative, which is to have someone make a nipple texture for you lol. Daynon Valentino made mine - I don't have a full skin, as I still do not like the embalmed corpse look, but I don't have neon pink nipples either :)

Interesting theory Jess :) I think another reason as that SL sunlight casts orange light instead of white so things look more yellow/orange in world than they do in photoshop.

Well, okay, I guess I didn't think about the lighting in SL LOL

I don't know much about graphics and in world lighting so I thought it might be sunless tanning. I guess the lighting in SL makes a lot more sense.

Oh well, now everyone knows a lot more about sunless tanning. I contributed something to the SL community! Does that mean I am not a welfare soaking bum anymore?? YAY! *laughs*

What about all of us borgs and bots? We get no representation in this?
Seriously though, I don't think racism is a very real issue in SL, even sexism is largely a nuissance rather than a major problem.
There is of course the underlying level of racism in the inhabitants that will always be present in human nature, but it rarely seems to manifest itself. Probably because someone who is close minded enough to have serious issues with someone who is a slightly different hue is not open minded enough to play SL. We are by and large a very open and intelligent gathering and enjoy a certain degree of peace from ignorance.

i've noticed all the black hair too. i think it's because other hair colors look nasty under certain lights in sl. plus black is badass.

There are colors other than black?

Black hair goes with my black wardrobe and my black tats (and sometimes my black mood).

Myself and Loki Pico seem to be a severe minority in SL, I haven't seen anyone else but us with orange skin... anyone know of any?

REPRESENT DA ORANGE!

I have, be on the lookout for people with badly done tan skin textures - you will note the weird orangeness on them, like they have gotten 10000% of the recommended daily allowance of Vitamin C.

Y'know, living in southern California (Hollywood), I see a hell of a lot of orange people. It's funny -- there are a lot of girls here like that, actually, with blond, blond hair, a truckload of eye makeup and orange skin. Usually paired with a teeny little skirt.

And it gets attention, y'know? Maybe not quite the attention they want, but believe me, you walk into a bar like that and somebody's gonna hit on you. Some people like orange skin. They think it is hot.

So, naturally, some people in SL are going to make their av have orange skin ... because they like the way it looks ... and I don't get it. Looking unnatural is scary, or drag-queen-like.

However, I am naturally tanned, so maybe I'm just lucky. I don't have to be orange.

You guys are lucky. I'm not even human. But I *am* mostly orange! And red, and yellow. And snuggly.

I have skins from pale goth white to dark black. The olive toned mediterranean skins are by far my biggest sellers :)

First off....Chip your skins rawk baby. Keep up the good work.

Secondly...I have a black skin even thought I'm mixed with white and black just casue its closer to my RL skin tone. But when it comes to people in SL I really don't care what ethnicity you are, just as long as you treat me with the respect i treat you with. I could care less if you were puke green or hot pink. Your still human and should be treated accordingly.

Race as in ethinicity, just to clear it up!!

Of all the people I have met, and all of the friends I have, I do not know their ethinicity in RL. Nor do I need to know. We are friends regardless of hertiage. I like it that way....
