Is race actually a big deal in SL? There are light and dark skin tones, but it seems there can only be White or Black. It also seems some poeple segregate themselves. What do you all think?

I think horse races used to be a big deal... i'm not too into that kind of thing myself, so I never went.

Oh, but i've heard great things about the giant snail races.

lol, I think you're going to get an almost unique answer for every person. In my opinion race does play a part but possibly not your rl race :). I see a very high latin avatar population. The general aesthetic seems to lead toward eastern influence with a hiphop twist. I dunno what their race is rl and I don't particularly care, so in that sense, no race doesn't matter a bit. I wouldn't even guess at a persons sex or physical fitness let alone the color of thier rl skin.

People in SL kinda tend to be a uniform tannish color. There are fewer avatars on either end of the spectrum. As to what race people are I don't really care I like a person because they are interesting or fun not by what color they are RL. BTW I'm pasty pale RL and slightly golden tan SL.

it seems there can only be white and black? i've seen every rl race represented in sl and that's more than white and black. not to mention all the wild colors, different species and mythical creatures people run around as. so far nobody has ever mentioned sl race around me either positive or negative so i'ma guess people are mature enough not to care.

I'm Asian-Avatarian.

Mostly.

Apart from being a Catbot and all, ya know...

The default female skin tone is a rather middle of the road tan (like sunbathing tan).

I suspect that race is only as prevalent as people choose to display it. I've only seen a coupple affrican american AVs, plenty of Asian AVs whose owners may or may not be Asian in RL (Asian is "trendy" in some circles), maybe one or two Mexican/Latin/Spanish personas...

Along with elves, drow, dwarves, aliens, giant snails, furries of every species, cartoon and anime characters, that strange purple ocean race from Warcraft, robots of every possible description...

Did you miss the large number of Asian and Latinos? Not to mention various Europeans with any variety of skintones?

I don't think there's just "black" or "white" races at all in SL ... sure, there are far more white folks in Second Life (judging mainly from avatarian races), but that has more to do with RL issues than in SL, IMO.

I'm a skunk! Well, sometimes I'm a cat. Or a bat, or a fox... or a dragon. Once ina while I'm a human, but that bores me.

Wait, what was the question again?

Teeny has a complexion similar to her creator. However, Teeny was specifically designed to be of neutral ethnicity. She can sort of pass for whatever you think she is.

I have skins from pale goth white to dark black. The olive toned mediterranean skins are by far my biggest sellers :)

My main av is nearly albino white, my secondary av is Mediterranean hued.

Someone's real-life ethnicity is no more an issue to me as their real-life gender. I just really don't care. What they are to me is what they portray themselves to be here In SL unless I choose to get to know them in a Real Life way.

In Second Life as in Real Life, I like seeing a diversity of tones and types, it makes things far more interesting, especially with some of strange and wonderful types SL allows.

As a side note, why do so many skins for medium to dark tan skin make the highlights on the skin orange based? It looks like the avatars have scurvy. It creeps me out!

Ooh that's lovely :D

I guess that people choose very tanned skins as these are what are perceived to be attractive in rl wherever they are. In TSO it was common to see many players with the same tanned, blonde avatar :(
