I'm thinking about getting an MP3 player this month.. After reading reviews I'm pretty much settle on IRiver.. But I was wondering if anyone would stick up for the Ipod? Or if anyone had any major problems with either? So which would you choose?

Ipod or IRiver ?

I bought myself the Sandisk Blue 512 MB player.. it's about the size of the iPod Shuffle, except it has a screen, working adjustable EQ, doubles as a USB drive, has voice recording capabilities and runs off of a single AAA battery (I ran it for an entire month up at campus on one alkaline)

Only 100 bucks too. Might be worth if you don't need your entire music collection at once. :)

Looks pretty cool.. Nice battery life.. But I'm really set on being able to view JPG images since I found out you could do it without having to buy an ipod photo.. And FM radio too!! Ipods are a rip off when you think about it lol.. *prepares to be yelled at by happy ipod owners*

I got my iPod at a substantial discount because of a membership at audible.com otherwise any mp3 player would have done. I do love the capacity but hate the controls.

Get a IPaq, you have the power of a PDA and you can play mp3 and when MP4 come out you can upgrade from your PC with out buying a new one.

You can also go with other Pocet PC PDAs and get the same thing. IPaq is just the #1 PDA.

A IPOD runs in the $299 rang and all you can do is play music.

A IPAQ runs in the $350 rang and you have a full PDA and you can do is play music.

I really don’t get people that buy IPODs. To high of cost for no real use.

iPods do way more than "just music."

iPods start at $99 - and go up to $399.

They are not MP3 players - though they do that also.

A 20gig and 40gig do songs, pics and back up contents of your HD, have calendar, notes, timers, alarms etc.

I've used my 20gb iPod for about a year and a half with no problems. Its a great MP3 player. I know nothing about the iRiver... it might be better.

I have an iPaq and an iPod. I can't really listen to music well on the iPaq. I know there's some trick to it, but if I try to listen to music on my iPaq and put it in my pocket, the buttons get pushed. If I am reading somehting on my iPaq or surfing the web or playing a game, then the sounds interfere with the music. If a song I don't like comes up, I have to go to the music program to find another song.

The iPod at $299 holds 20 gigs of music. My iPaq has a 1 gig flash card that cost $100. Plus it has other stuff on it so I can't fillit with music. I dont' think they compare.

They do slightly more than "just music". You have to admit the ipod range is very focussed on music. Even the iPod photo isn't much of a departure - I mean they go to the effort of putting a colour screen on the thing but it doesn't do something useful like play video, no it lets you view still photos.. on a tiny little screen, great!

Ipod for the win!

I use mine to:
• transfer files
• listen to MP3s
• record voice memos
•*keep my appointments (calendar)
• play music in my car

I use it every day. I love the Monster iPlay, which transmits the music directly to my car stereo without wires! yay! I have the iPod boombox, which I just slip my iPod into, great for parties at the beach or in our backyard or for when we're soaking in the jacuzzi. It's just so easy to use and has so many useful accessories! <3

Ipod and Iriver are around the samish price, right? But the iRiver only has 5gbs? Thats... nothing, The expensive iPod has eight times that... what could possibly make up for eight times the file space? Really...?

Ok I'll post more info.. Of why I like the IRiver :p

It costs the same as the Ipod Mini 6GB.. A little less even..

But it has.. Microphone included, FM Radio (FM Recording), Colour screen with JPG viewing, Line in recording (with optional cradle).

With the ipod range.. You have to buy a microphone to record, I think theres an FM radio add on coming out some time, you have to buy an ipod photo to view JPGs.

The only things I've found going agaist the IRiver are a couple of minor things that should be fixed with a Firmware update (which may already be out), no calender options or games or anything like the ipod that I can see, and the software isn't quite as good as ITunes or whatever the Ipod has lol.. And its not Mac compatible from what I can see..

The color screen and FM radio swung it for me :D

More thoughts?

Funny how people keep supporting a company that told every one fuck you over and over.

IPod first came out they had a life time of the battery and you could not get them to replace. A man had to go on national news and yell and scream for them to change, oh and file a law suit. They backed down and put a new battery in for him. Still the idea that they would not for that price really offends me. If they didn’t want to supply a batter what about Upgrading to MP4? They are almost out and ready to go.

Mac till the late 1990s had a 600% mark up. PCs had a 20% markup. Bill Gates did that with his price for the OS but people talk about how Gates was the bad guy and Jobs was so good. Apple said they were going down to a 20% markup and every said how good they were for this. PEOPLE they are fucking you.

You go buy a Mac still today they have little ability to upgrade. I have many Mac friends and that is the ONLY thing they get mad about. Well I keep LOL at them and say if you want to support a company that tells you FUCK YOU buy new of keep slow then you will have that problem.

Any one that would support Apple has a problem in my book. Now I am a nut ball so that really should hold little weight with any one.

I see people talking about what they can do with a Ipod. It’s funny lets see what can they do??
• transfer files
• listen to MP3s

•*keep my appointments (calendar)
• play music in my car

What can a IPaq (Or any other PocketPC PDA) do?
• transfer files
• listen to MP3s
• record voice memos
• keep my appointments (calendar) and sink to your daytime on your computer
• play music in my car (admirably not as easy but get a plug and you can do this too)
• Play games
• keep your check book and sink to your check book on your computer
• Use a Word processor
• Surf the net (most have wireless built in now and Blue tooth)
• much much more!!

Just to add a little more Aldi you know the Cheep store, is selling a PDA (PocketPC not a Palm) for only $299 it comes with a GPS and a map program. It will speak to you as you drive so you do not have to look at it.

Also for upgrade a IPaq to turn it to a cel phone can a Ipod do that?

Well I think I have made a case that if you are going to spend money I would spend it on something that can do more not less. People will do what they want. I had a friend that thought a IPod was the way to go, he got the IPaq because of work and he is a painter (Addresses, Appointments, estaments, supply keeping) and uses it with www.audible.com for his audio books. He no longer wants a Ipod.

I have an IRiver Portable Media Player. It has a 20gb harddrive with the ability to play compressed video files, like Xvid and DivX. It can also play MP3's, pictures and text files. If a video comes in different format, it comes witha compressor that can convert the video file. It also can be connected to a TV and its firmware is upgradeable. It also has support for subtitles.

Ok I'm going to repeat myself coz I've forgotton what I posted.. The IRiver H10 does.. Songs, Radio, Pictures, Recording (FM, Voice and Line-in).

And they do higher spec versions.. They usually cost about 5-10% more than similar versions of the Ipod but do a heck lot more..

The calendar, notes, timers, alarms etc I think I would find get in the way or be lost on me.. My phone does all that anyway hehe..

*starts a cell phone thread*

And what is the cost of the new Batter? Oh ya $99 for the $99 IPods. So you have to pay full price to get what? A batter not a new unit. Sounds like they are bending you over if you ask me.

Also see H100 Series... A little out of my price range, and does more than I want/need. But good to throw something up from IRiver that seriously rivals the Ipod Photo..

H140 (40gb) costs about £245 from what I can find.. And the Ipod photo 30gb costs about the same..

The H140 does everything but the Calender and Notes etc from what I can see plus..

An hour extra battery life, plays MPEG, voice recording, FM radio.

I'm sure I'm forgetting somethings.. But that'll do :D

Ummm How many files can you transfer with 64 megs internal and maybe a 1 gig flash card. How do you listen to music running without pushing the buttons? You never answered that. They are also rather fragile.

My iPaq sucks for listening to music. My iPaq only holds one gig. My iPod holds 60 gigs for $440. Dude what don't you get? I don't want my stereo to be a refridgerator, stove coffeemaker. I don't want to do GPS and Pocketpc with my music.

You are not addresssing space at all. Why?

Plus, the person didn't ask about iPaq, he asked iRiver or iPod.

iPaqs are good PDA's but they are not MP3 Players.

Its good to talk about other devices. I put an "other" option in the poll for that purpose :)

I've subsequently looked into PDA's.. I don't think I'd want one instead of an MP3 player, although some might. But they certainly look good :)

Can I just say how much I HATE the iTunes software? Like all the other obnoxious Apple software it will steal all your file associations and give you no way to reset them without having to do it manually. And it will do it every time you use the damn softare. GRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Apple can kiss my ass.

Hi Chip, I think if you go to preference and uncheck use iTunes as the default for audio files, you shoudn't have that problem anymore.

Funny I find Microsoft products more intrusive. But then that's just me. Hope that helps.

I like the Dell digital jukebox actually.
30 gigs & $240.
(Well for now, it's on sale.)
It doesn't have an fm tuner...but with
30 gigs for music I wouldn't use my
radio anyway. ;)
