Fed up and not going to take anymore

Let me start by saying I know that I am not perfect, and I even know that I am way to serious at times. Having said that however I would like to discuss some disturbing behavior I have noticed in our little world lately.
Let’s pretend for a moment that you have just come home from a long day at work. You get a cold drink slip in to your PJs and settle in to your favorite chair to listen to some nice relaxing tunes. Then let’s say that you neighbor, not your next-door neighbor nope the guy who lives a block away decides it’s time to throw an impromptu party. His music is playing full blast his friends are sitting in his yard yelling obscenities at the top of their lungs, and you hear it all a very nice scene indeed. Ok you say to yourself I will go over and have a chat with him. He does not come out to talk to you however, he sends his drunk friends while he hides inside behind a locked door. All right then you will try to reason with him through the door. You talk about the loud music and the vulgarity being shouted. Your neighbor comes up with a very logical excuse for both situations. One it’s not him yelling the vulgar things and he can’t stop his friends. Two his stereo is broken and he has to play it that loud but hey, if you are willing to pay him $300 he will buy a new stereo and play his music lower. Now let’s not forget your neighbors friends their argument is even more intelligent “hey it’s a free world dude”…….””why don’t you loosen up can’t ya just have fun”.
This story seems ludicrous but it happened to me tonight. After working several hours on my house, I sat down in my newly finished living room to listen to music. However, my neighbors near the lonely island had other plans. First, we got to hear “was up” at record decibels, repeated about 50 times. Then recordings from what I can only figure was a hooker of some type promising “me love you long time” then a young man talking about urination, and what I believe was Burgess Meredith listing several euphemisms for sex. When I went over to talk to these kind folks, I met with a ton of abuse. I was told if I pay them 300 bucks, they would re sample their sounds and play them lower. It was also suggested if I don’t like how ghetto (and I am using their words) they are making the area I should just move. I was also told it’s a free world they can do what they want. Let me remind you I live in Welsh a PG sim.
All this raises a question or 2 for me. 1. since when do we have to pay people to act respectful? 2. isn’t there an area in SL heck several areas where these things are not only accepted they are expected? 3. The lonely island has always been a nice area so what are we just let it go to pot now because bullies move in.
Now most people in SL that know me know I don’t like to fight. I am a pretty peaceful sort. I mean look at my behavior rating. I just want to live in peace. I thought that was what this whole thing was about. I am finding out however I was wrong. It seems that out here or in there humans are still humans. There is always going to be that group that thinks if they yell louder use force and ignore the rules they can get away with it. And they just might.
Let me tell you one thing though I will not pay to be abused. I had stayed away for a while. I was very upset when a war game was opened up right next to my house. I decided to buck up however and moved I spent time and money building my new place only to have the abuse land in my lap again. If this is, what it is going to be like and I have no protection then bye bye. II you moved to a town like this you would not stay long.
Now for you mental giants that are going to come back at me with the comments about whining, and my orientation…GO FOR IT BRIGHT BOY. And please come up with something more intelligent than “hey just play the game dude”.
People seem to think that internet means anonymous and that seems to mean you can do anything you want and get away with it. You might just for a while. It will catch up to you. The Lindens will catch on soon enough.
I just don’t understand why some guys like my neighbor get their oh so small yayas off being rude to others. My lord what a waste of human space.
Well that my rant sorry to offend those that it offends, but you know what even the nice guys eventually get fed up with punks.

I hope the next release adds a way to block sounds from other places to your land.

That really sucks Thai. So far I've been lucky and haven't met any really rude people in SL, but it's certainly only a matter of time. Beta for the most part has been a nice quiet oasis of people of above average intelligence and creativity... head and shoulders above any other mmog I've played in that respect. But I'm afraid that bubble is going to burst in a big way when it goes live and the SL population begins to resemble the RL population... 80% morons (me? cynical?).

I'd like to propse a new sim type... how about we have PG, Mature, and Over 30!

I hope you stick around Thai. My guess is that people like that aren't going to make many friends, won't get rated well, won't make money, and probably will get bored and move on to ruder pastures. We can hope anyway.

Oh and why dont you tell the story strait.. not from your "I want it my way" point of view.. for one we offered a very logical solution to YOUR problem. I think its funny that after 30 mins of converstaion.. its not enough you have to come and spill our guts on the forums... well sorry you think that anybody that is in your space is lame... but frankly.. you were in mine man! I tried several times to find out what you wanted done and you never had any idea what you were pissed about.. you just kept sayin "I cant stand your noise" Its too loud! make it less loud! and I said "Sorry dude the sound is a gesture and the gestures default is that loud.. cant fix it less I resample the sounds but that will cost me like 300 bucks cuse I have to REdownload them all" You said MAKE IT LESS LOUD... ITS TOO LOUD! I said "Well that would take an hour outa my own REAL LIFE!!!! and then 300 of my SL dollars but.. I will do it if you give me the money to do it because your the only one who wants the sounds to be turned down." That when you started to talk about all the other people who hate the sounds.... funny how you mentioned people that were complimenting them yesterday!!! lol.... Good luck man with getting the world to work the way YOU want it. Sorry if I piss you off but I tried to help but you didnt want it fixed.. you just wanted to complain.. so If you give me the money I will take MY TIME!!!! not your time but MINE to fix YOUR problem. sorry, I read what you wrote again and I just want everyone to know that what he wrote... was a Thai interpritation.. we (as in all but 1 of us cuse they were prety pissed at Thai) were very polite and tried to offer several solutions to THIA's problem. (We even made the one guy who was pissed go on timeout. Sat his happy self in the corner.) Thai didnt even know what he wanted done to fix HIS problem. So again Thai... dont cry about it man just talk to the people you got a problem with... not gunna fix it buy crying.

I really want some fresh new drama...

Chip, a mature sim for people over 30? I bet you can't guess how old some of these people are. Some of the largest pains in the butt are my age (over 30.) Age has nothing to do with it.

I am curious to see what the Lindens decide to do about these requests/demands for peace.

I am a big fan of personal freedom, but some people want change. What is going to happen? It would probably be a good idea to get some of this stuff in place or at least spelled out at Go Live time. It would really be unfortunate if people that I get online to see won't come here anymore.

It's my opinion that it would be better for users to dictate what affects them than to regulate the behavior of others. It's great if we can all be unified, but people are too diverse and it is too easy to get your dander up and say things to people that aren't that helpful.

Wow that is terrible! I am curious what they were playing. Was it my song? I hope not and if it was I will fix it. I came out with something to stop music using the Zsound script and I hope people with music will add this modification so it can be turned off.

I have met Thai on several occasions and he seems like nice enough guy. I some what agree with both of you, Realtime is right in that technically he can be playing the sounds. But Thai is right in the fact that since he does want to hear them he requested that they be turned down. Seems reasonable enough to me. Now, it would cost you money to do it, but its not like its real money, And it would be nice thing to do. I believe your whole approach to a solution was wrong. Couldn't you have just stopped playing them for a few min? Thought well within your rights, common curtosey is involved here. Part of SL is that it governs itself through a common respect.

I am worried about how it will be effected when we go live also. Are there going to be people that try and throw the whole system of common respect, that we have been working with for almost a year, right out the window? Its a good question and one that can only be answered with time.

In Short -
I agree with both of you. You should be able to play your sounds, and you should be able to have quiet. Though I think that the two of you can come up with a better solution than, "Give me 300$ to fix it."

First Realtime I did say you offered solutions. One was to pay you 300 bucks to fix a problem that you are creating (that sounds like a protection racket). Two you and your friends suggested I leave. Oh yeah you were being very polite while I am trying to discuss offensive sounds with you kept playing them and laughing.
I am all for live and let live. I would not even go over there if I could get some peace. I do not care what sounds you have if I cannot hear it on my property. As far as turning down my speakers great good idea. Now when I am online playing the game I can’t hear my own music the sound of the waves that I paid for or the chimes I paid for.
I don’t want the whole world my way. I want to be able to have a little peace on the part of the world that belongs to me.
Other people should not be able to dictate what I hear.
As long as you want to tell the whole story let’s be truthful. You and your buddies were belittling and rude. I did tell you what the problem was you just don’t care.
The part of the story I left out was for your own good. The fact that as I flew up to Roo’s place you and your buddies were already making your view clear. One of you played a very offensive way and BABA said, “Oh that one is great it will offend a lot of people I have to have it.” Then the conversation turned to me Roo said he could not use his jet ski because quote “It p***ses Thai off. Your reply, “who cares”. To clear that up I never said I disliked Roo’s jet ski I asked him to re route his racecourse because everytime he came by my house he froze me. I don’t think it is unreasonable to ask that there is a lot of open water on your side of the island and not on mine.
Be truthful you guys just came to second life to cause trouble. You found one of the quietest and well-kept areas moved in and started trashing it. Please stop. That’s all I ask. Look around you at what you are crapping on. These people (including me) are working hard to build something. Please respect that.

The SL of Roo Jones:

Chapter 1: I heard about SL in the wwiiol forums. Created account, moved to outlands, learned about the game.

Chapter 2: Outlands seemed to have a higher % of troublemakers. Roo and his new found friend Ian float to Welsh to learn more of what SL has to offer. Here we meet Steller and fix her balloon to move about the world. She rejoices and throws a Balloon event.

Chapter 3: I meet Crimson and Sia and script some items in his Castle. He’s happy. I also give him a friendly pet fish to swim in his swamp below.

Chapter4: Ian and I meet G. Busche and we add a bell and moving garage doors and he rejoices. Here we also make friends with the entire R66 gang. (Cool Bunch)

Chapter5: A new sim opens up and Ian and I stake our claim far away from our friends and build a boardwalk/dock area. We have fun. Steller misses us and asks if we will return to Welsh to live next door. Ok we do. Ian is bummed a little at our new slow start but soon we have a nice beach with waves and a volcano.

Chapter6: Ian and I make cool things like jetskis, cigars, drinks, and now traffic starts to flow by and see what we are up to. Char Linden comes by and tells me she’s impressed.

Chapter7: Most of the ppl that stop by are nice but we cannot control who comes. Some troublesome ppl show up and this Thai fellow starts associating me with the few bad apples.

So, last night I decide to remove myself from public and go inside my office and build some nice items. Some friends stop in and help. Someone has some “waazup” wavs and plays them. Some other ppl want some too so this person says ok I will play them and you tell me which one you want ok? So he plays 5 or so and we hear a shout from Thai telling 7 ppl in my place to shut up. Meanwhile I’m still working on my scripts.

Thai if you have a problem with them talk to them, I don’t control them. I’ve done nothing to you. I didn’t send anyone “out” to talk to you. I was busy in my place building. I wasn’t hiding in there like you say. I was, to put it in perspective, relaxing in my place, listening to tunes, shoes off, and some touchy neighbors comes by yelling at people on my land.

Do you see my side now? Why do you talk like it’s all my fault. I have done NOTHING.

If there’s a question about my character, feel free to ask some board leaders about me, Realtime Rogers, George Busche, Steller Sunshine. Also Pete Fats, Tweked Underhill, Crimson & Sia Sunchaser. I think you will find I’m a really nice guy that gives free help to ppl and makes SL a better place.

The notion that this is "Thai's problem" also bugs me. We are a community and we need to work together to solve problems. The "its just a game" mentality is I think where we get stuck. SL isnt your average "game". Some argue it isnt a game at all. Shall we self define? Poll anyone?


I also had a neighbor with loud music and I went over and talked to him. He didnt know it was so loud that far away. You know what? He turned it down.

Volume inworld is not like volume irl! SL volume is about distance not loudness.

Coming to the forums to air dirty laundry isnt the best solution but since we dont have rules and policing over items not in community standards I can see where one would want to try and solve an issue with community pressure (ie posting here). So theres another issue.

I'm for freedoms but to keep them we need to learn how to work things out so the Lindens don't feel compelled to make rules for us.

This wasn't about music. The music i do play is on volume 0.5.

The problem here is the geature wavs that you play. They have a default volume that seems to be loud.

This has nothing to do with a prim spawned that is playing a sound. This is the AV itself making wavs using gesture commands.


And BTW, I'm not some punk kid. I'm a 31 y/o professional Chemical Engineer.

I never said anything against you and I never implied any such thing.

I appreciate the clarification regarding the volume. Clips placed in objects or your av should IMHO be done with common consideration for others.

My point that we are a community and need to work together to keep the freedoms that we have . I really am not commenting on anyone being right or wrong. Im commenting on that if we dont want Lindens to tighten the rules, we ALL need to treat our freedoms with respect.

People may or may not have noticed but the community standards ARE changing based on behaviors of residents.

Do we want to keep the ability to create custom sounds for our avs? If enough people abuse that right and enough other people complain then we may not be able to.

Just a couple of questions...

Were the wavs of a PG nature?
And if people wanted to hear the wavs Why not play them in an objects since you knew that gesture sounds play full blast?

Its definatly wrong to have someone else pay for your sounds to be resampled because you sampled them at to high a volume in the first place. I had many sounds sampled to high myself, and some people didn't like how high they played. Did I complain that they should deal with it? No. I sure didnt expect them to pay for me to resample. Any one remember my 7's song that plays across 2 sims? lol

This could have been avoided if both parties backed down a bit, regardless of who felt wronged. But the sounds are an obvious fix to the issue. Play them in a object, its more controlable. or better yet if you want it to be a gesture you can script an attachment with this sound and have it listen for a gestured word. So then it works like a gesture sound but controlable.

People need to try to get along if we are going to have any playable experiences when GOLIVE. Cuz if we show anarchy it will only get worse.

Just like a parent is the role model for their children, we need to show newcomers that SL can be peacefull and fun without trying to anger others all the time.

I have learned that you dont realy like my gesture wav's so to make your day alittle better, when Im at Roo's place I will take my hand of the gesture button... Makes MY SL world a little less sweetness but hey.. If you cant live without that change then I will change FOR YOU.

Sorry to all you people for my little blow up, up there earlier.. I was a little upset because of how Thai made me and my frineds sound like punk kids.

I am a woman and if you paid attention to your neihgbors you would know that. The phrase should have been like an adult anyway. I did try several times I sent IMs, dropped by and talk to the property owner and still it went on. This is not the first incident with that group. Robo Rogers attacked Steller the other night after showing up tp my party with a gun. If you don't want us to think of you as children then behave like responsible adults. You did not try to work it out. You and your friends were rude and insulting.
As far as Roo and Roos sl life story. Roo I have been in SL awhile too. I have helped others and have many friends. Would you like to compare behaivor ratings. All I ask is for you to keep you sounds on your property as well as your guns. And yes several of the wavs were of adult nature they should not be on a PG sim.
My question is if you are all so sincere and want to get along so much then why did I hear one of you say she wanted a certain wav because she knew it would offend others?

First it was me flying the Stars and Bars, now it's someone else for being too loud..

You are starting a pattern of complaints about so many people in this game that I hope someone is taking note of it all.

Thai get's on her soap box and shouts to us all about tolerance, but attacks other players now that choose not to "sit down and relax in her house" just like her..

You want to fight the whole world fine, but I think once again your looking for another fight..

The SL world and the real world are never going to be perfect for you.. Stop trying to make people conform to your perception of how things should be.

I have complained twice. Once about you flying that flag. Please don't try to call it the stars and bars and try to make it sound all American. Remember it represents a group of people who were at war with The United States. And trust me here I don't want you and your friends to come relax in my house. I want to be able to have peace in my house.
Let's discuss your little friend Goeth who decided to come over to my place today and start bumping against the walls when he could not get in to the house. Then decide to make comments about my oreintatin. That was not enough however now the little jerk follows me everywhere. Sounds like this is working itself out, thank goodness.

I came in on the tail end of one of the incidences, so I don't really feel qualified to take sides.

It's another example though of where we might best be thinking of how to improve the software rather than simply modifying one another's behavior.

I've only uploaded a few sound files. Invariably they were too loud or too soft, but since they were intended to be background sounds, I erred on the side of too soft and then let well enough alone.

I saw some references to volume settings for sound files. Maybe thats a new feature, or I missed it when I uploaded mine. What I had to do previously was to adjust the sound using an external program and then re-upload it. Most of these programs have sliders for volume controls, but I have no confidence that .5 or 50% or any other measure on one program corresponds to anything on another program. I also know that what sound perfectly normal to me at my speaker settings might be either blaringly loud or inaudible on someone else's computer using their speaker settings.

What I'd really like is to be able to upload ANY sound at any volume and THEN to adjust the volume at which it is played by SL after the fact. That setting could be locked down by the original uploader, and (possibly) changed by someone who acquired the sound (I think its fairly easy to grab sounds out of cache, so selling sounds is probably a non-starter) by whatever means.

Furthermore, I'm sure there are sounds that annoy each of us, whether its words or phrases we find offensive, or fingernails across a blackboard. There really should be a way to filter this stuff out. You may have no choice but to hear it once or twice, but you should have a choice about hearing it constantly (at any volume). I'd suggest a diagnostic mode that prints out the ID of each sound you hear, maybe producing a list of the last 10 sounds or something. You could then sample those sounds to verify the ID of the sound you object to. Then a relatively simple (I think) client mod would allow those specific sounds to be blocked. You'd be happy, those around you would be happy. If you really wanted something fancy, the blocking mode for sounds would also allow sounds to be "potted" down on a case by case basis by the client. This would also allow subjective differences of opinion about "it's too loud" to be dealt with on a case by case basis.
