Not happy about Linden Labs purchase of XStreet (formerly SLX) and OnRez. Will this mean LL will ban resident run online shoping outlets in favor of their own?

My biggest pet peeve is lose/loose. The words mean COMPLETELY different things!

Of course, the best part is when people get reffered to as "loosers".

This one bugs me too.

I just want something I can read without straining my eyes or brain.

There's a big difference between people whose first language is not English or have a disability, and therefore post with less than perfection, and the person who simply doesn't care enough to bother. I think most people are talking about those who don’t bother (or at least I am).

What bugs me is when people write so poorly for whatever reason, grammer, spelling, punctuation (including paragrahs) that I can't figure out what they mean without a lot of effort. They've wasted their time if their communication doesn't communicate. And maybe I've missed something I would have wanted to know!

Then I assume you chose "Spelling"?

Corrected, so you can go back to breathing.

I hate hate hate when people repeat them self over and over and over again, as if we didn't get it the first time. I mean really, they just keep on saying the same thing, and don't add anything. They just keep saying the same thing over and over. It's very annoying that they want to keep saying the same point. Why can't they move on?

What really really really bugs me is when people say the same thing in a second paragraph. Like we didn't get it in the first. They keep on repeating it over and over and over. We get it already, stop repeating yourself over and over and over.

These people just keep saying the same thing, as if we can't read it unless it's typed 20 times, they just keep on going and going and going, like the energizer bunny. Over and over and over they repeat the point.

It bugs me when people repeat their point.... Do you know what I mean?

I hate when people think "them self" is a real phrase.

this gets on my nerves, more in RL than on forums, when people say "I could care less". this implies that you care some. It should be "I couldN'T care less"

That's one of mine, too, Billybob.

I was watching "My Fair Brady" tonight and the broad said "vy-sectomy" instead of "vasectomy". Then, she has the gall to correct Peter Brady when he said "Lay-byrinth" instead of "labyrinth".

Oy gevalt.

My ex says "viadock" instead of "viaduct". He also says "counsel" instead of "console".

I understand English is a difficult language to master, but cripes, act like you (generally speaking) have a flippin' brain and like you learned something all those years in school. If you don't make an effort, I don't read it.

I have problem with it AL including in my own language..

I am very dyslectik, including I read things and sometimes ustand something that are not in the text... I cant spell, I cant grammar.. yes absolute right!! - its no fun..
I have often cryed.. or get to the bathroom and screamed..

And yes many put me aside as a dumb type.,.,. many do.

And more..

On the other side my visual work are well known where I work IRL - and my body language are strong... When I must write a sales plan I at page 3.. write something like this

”Sorry about AL wrong speledd words... ” ...and after that most people that WANT TO USTAND do it or ask polite for an explanation...

The ones that DONT WANT to ustand are another sort of people - one that I can live without...

A human that want to hurt people by the by nature inbuilt problems are not a human..

/Tina - EXAKT bad in spelling but EXAKT in Designing:-)))

It's the Greengrocers' Apostrophe i.e. incorrect plurals - "tomato's four for a pound". I keep thinking "tomato's what?"

Yes! I recently had a trip from the south coast to London, and going through one town every other shop had a superfluous apostrophe somewhere. Apart from one ('Frenchs') - which didn't have one which was needed.

Your style of English is very idiosyncratic. It certainly doesn't give the impression of stupidity. It is unique and individual to you.

Actually it reminds me of Andie Apollo's English style, and she was responsible for creating a phrase (Stop To Sell Babies in a Box!) which has become part of sl's history. Something that most of us never managed to achieve.

So don't get discouraged, Tina. And don't change. :)

I highly recommend Eats Shoots & Leaves The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation by Lynne Truss to anyone who likes biting humor with their punctuation rules. Here's an excerpt from the jacket:

A panda walks into a cafe. He orders a sandwich, eats it, then draws a gun and fires two shots in the the air.
"Why?" asks the confused waiter, as the panda makes towards the exit. The panda produces a badly punctuated wildlife manual and tosses it over his shoulder.
"I'm a panda," he says, at the door. "Look it up."
The waiter turns to the relevant entry and, sure enough, finds an explanation.
"Panda. Large black-and-white bear-like mammal, native to China. Eats, shoots and leaves."

Actually from her style of writing it's obvious that English is a second language for her. So knowing this, her style has never bothered me in the slightest. After all, her English is way better than my Swedish. :) The ones that bother me are the ones who were schooled in English and are just being lazy.

What is happening with this one is that they are being lazy. What they should say is "Like I could care less". This implies that it's not possible to care less than they do. People just get lazy and leave the "like" off, so the sarcasm doesn't work. Which actually makes it all the worse!

"Here, here" vs. "Hear, hear"

I tend to be fairly tolerant to spelling and other mistakes since I make tons of them myself, being a non-native speaker. I just wish people who know better would actually correct me, I need all the help I can get.

After spending so long in Japan, any English, no matter how bad, is a welcome breath of fresh air after the mangled gibberish I have to gaze upon at work.

Thanks for the information, Vares. When she said she was Swedish I imagined she was from somewhere called Swedeton in the West Country.

The comma, she is my dirty, dirty mistress. I abuse her so horribly.

One of my biggest peeves is duel/dual. I will forgive people who are ESL, though they tend to be better at typing out English than many who speak it natively. I will also forgive people who make random mistakes here and there, I know I'm far from perfect. But there's some people that keep doing the same thing over and over... must... not... strangle!

Oh, and don't forget the word 'irregardless!' STOP USING IT! Regardless of what you think!
