l33tsp34k.

I can handle it in small ammounts but I have a friend who every other word is that rape of the written word.

I don't personally write in internet shorthand unless I'm tired and just don't give a damn anymore, but I don't judge folks who do.

Definitely leetspeak... but most of the others too, though these can be forgiven, especially from non-native English speakers (usually). There's no excuse for typing like a 4 year old however.

They all annoy me to varying degrees, but l33tsp33k is at the top of the list.

Given recent experience IMing via my cell phone, I can understand it if one is texting or IMing from a cell, as the keypad alphabet thingy can be a right pain in the ass (and don't get me started on the predictive text setting... :p ), but at a computer, with plenty of time to compose? Ugh.

I voted "other" just to be contrary. I don't run into the l33tsp34k very often. What gets my goat is the continuous run-on verbage without any capitalization or punctuation. This hurts my brain. With l33tsp34k I know to stop reading and ignore right away, but the run-on fools me into reading for awhile.

"when people see a thread and think they want to respond to it so they hit the post reply button and then just start typing what they wanted to say as theyre brain thinks it and how theyre braing thinksl it and then dont bother to go back and rpoof read buecaseu they have to get the omeesage on to the board as quick as possible or else someone will beat them to the punch"

It's annoying when people post like that especially when they're trying to argue a point on something. When I see any posts in a debate thread that are formatted like that, I quickly dismiss it as irrelevant.

Hell, I even spell check my posts once in a while if I am feeling too lazy to proof read it.

I realized that "l33tsp34k" is not necessarily an error, but a bad habit. But I have definitely seen intarweb shortcuts used in normal writing due to a combination of habit and stupidity.

The only one I use regularly is "sexmeplzkthxbai", but that's when I meet new females avatars in Ahern.

I hate hate hate when people repeat them self over and over and over again, as if we didn't get it the first time. I mean really, they just keep on saying the same thing, and don't add anything. They just keep saying the same thing over and over. It's very annoying that they want to keep saying the same point. Why can't they move on?

What really really really bugs me is when people say the same thing in a second paragraph. Like we didn't get it in the first. They keep on repeating it over and over and over. We get it already, stop repeating yourself over and over and over.

These people just keep saying the same thing, as if we can't read it unless it's typed 20 times, they just keep on going and going and going, like the energizer bunny. Over and over and over they repeat the point.

It bugs me when people repeat their point.... Do you know what I mean?

My biggest pet peeve is lose/loose. The words mean COMPLETELY different things!

Of course, the best part is when people get reffered to as "loosers".

this gets on my nerves, more in RL than on forums, when people say "I could care less". this implies that you care some. It should be "I couldN'T care less"

All of these items poke at me when I read 'em, but my brain usually can put two and two together to arrive at the meaning.

My real pet peeve is with those cruel folks who feel the need to jump down the throats of posters who have lots of grammatical/spelling issues. So often, it's absolutely obvious that English is not the OPs first language, and, there have even been occasions where the OP acknowledges physical or learning disabilities that make writing and typing tough for them. Yet, a few very nasty people feel compelled to berate, calling the OPs idiots, morons, and worse.

Give me a misspelled or misused word any day -- it's the self-appointed judges I can do without!

Teh grammars ain't alwayz teh issues!

Yeah! I'm calling all you judges to the carpet, so stop judging. Or I'll judge you morer. Stop being a judge of evry1. And never, ever, ever, ever repeat yourself, ever, ever, ever. ;)

There's a big difference between people whose first language is not English or have a disability, and therefore post with less than perfection, and the person who simply doesn't care enough to bother. I think most people are talking about those who don’t bother (or at least I am).

Edit to add: ...And a difference with people who purposely format their posts in a hard to read manner (via leet speak or whatever).

If a person is trying to advocate a point but doesn't care enough to at least try to format their post in a sensible way, then why should anyone care what they have to say?

If I go into a French language forum to try to argue a point, the onus is on me to make my message as clear as possible. If I go in there and post a bunch of French leet speak, I expect to be ridiculed and dismissed.

Edit one more time to add: I did want to agree that it's pretty shitty behavior to berate someone who obviously doesn't have English as their first language or spelled a few words wrong here and there.

It's the Greengrocers' Apostrophe i.e. incorrect plurals - "tomato's four for a pound". I keep thinking "tomato's what?"

(I realised that I had to be very careful with my apostrophe there - I think that we're referring to greengrocers in the plural in this instance. Not to have a go at greengrocers here or anything.)

Oh, and the use of "quotes" for "emphasis" really "gets on my tits". You don't see that online very often, but it's on signs all the time.

"Leetspeak" is simply laziness, pure and simple. It was invented by people who didn't know how to spell and were too lazy to learn. So they try to cover it by saying "oh, I did that on purpose to be cool".

Yeah, and a bunch of monkeys are going to come flying out of my ass too.

Face it, we live in a world of written communication now. Learn proper grammar and spelling. Or at least learn some grammar and then use spellcheck ya lazy bum! :)
