Not sure I'd call anything described as in production as a potential competitor for SL, just a new business model for MMOGs in the current style.

The bit at the end about "consolidation in [their] space" sounds like it could end up being something similar (albeit probably without the user created content) though.

Thanks for digging that out.

If you happen to come across the paper on virtual worlds in the next 24 hours would you mind posting that too? I'm finishing off my dissertation (which is on virtual worlds) and anything more I can use for quotes would be well helpful.

:)

I know this is realativly old now but hope you found the info you needed for your dissertation.

I am doing my Msc disseration on Online Virtual Worlds this year that use RCE( real cash economys) as many are starting to appear the on coming out soon is Roma Victor and while not like SL it offers the chance to make money, much like SL, PE, Hobbo Hotel and some other games.

I would like to know if anyone knows of any talks expected in SL about RCE's or Virtual Worlds I have browsed the finds but can't find anything.

The title is misleading. "Gamer" isn't accurate. A little research and you'll find the name of the person who purchased it. A simple google search and you'll find that this is an inside bid.

This has been said soo many times the person who bought it is a US spokesperson for MindArk yes but they are a swedish company. Jon jacobs or Neverdie as he is known has been playing PE since it started in Beta (2003) was one of the first people to complete a full set of rare armour.

His ingame name is Jon NEVERDIE Jacobs I fail to see how he hides anything just like SL people who work for MA have mindark attacked to their names just like the Lindens

He is a movie Producer(His 2005 filck was called "Hey DJ";) and DJ and he has also released a song called "Gamer Chick" he asked MA to put it in the jukebox in game and they said yes.

He also made a bid for the island that sold for 26'000 but was outbid the year earlier. On a sidenote there were 11 serious investers in the sale of the space station one of which was the owner of TI (the first Island bought for $26k) 100,000 was the buyout price of the second auction as MA knew after the first on there were investors that would spend the PED's.

Jacobs bought the Space Station because he was in Florida at the time of a hurricane, you can check out his message at www.realityport.com just after he made the purchase, when the hurricane had hit and his power went down. Had he not bought it The buyer of the first island would have a couple of hours later.

PE is full of big paying players I am not one of them but I do enjoy it and have spoken to ND on various occasions he is intending to turn the resort into a virtual nightclub with Real Life Famous DJ's preforming. He gains tax from people hunting, mining and selling/buying on his land, as do the other smaller land owners.

The TI island made its money back in less then a year, so after a few years the resort can be expected to do the same.

PE and SL are two separate games I come to SL to socialise and PE to shoot things, the only thing that is similar is the inclusion of RCE, (one fixed and one variable) and the inclusion of streamed audio, video material.

ND now runs the resort full time and has remorgaged his house and gathered a team of web developers/designers and event promoters all from the game to help him.
