From: Cocoanut Koala And - take a look - Aimee, Forum Queen, has taken this opportunity to make an entire post about me. She thinks the forums are just this terrific place if it weren't for the likes of those like me:
Um, Cocoanut, she was referring to Prokofy, not you. Also, I have never seen Aimee even remotely say anything regarding not wanting you in this forum. She has not been shy about stating her belief that Prokofy not being in these forums is a good thing, and I concur too. I disagree with you 95% of the time it seems, but I would not want you to not post here. Why is it when someone is not attacking you, you go ahead and attribute the attack to you anyway?

Business, there has been some great advice here. Life is too short for drama, people tend to be nicer in SL than on the forums, people's rants hurt themselves more than their targets, etc.
To this I would add my own advice ... Keep a great sense of humor!

Familiarity Breeds Contempt

I agree with the OP. And it is disappointing that some people suppose that because they consider these forums to be 'tame' by comparison to some others that this in some way justifies a low standard. In my experience the level of poor behaviour in any forum is in direct proportion to how easy the participants feel that thy can avoid any consequence to their behaviour. Thus, for example, is so much of Usenet such a sad waste of time. No one has to post as if they have no regard whatsoever to the feelings of the other participants. I for one am certainly put off posting here because I perceive it to be skewed by postings that seem intent on playing to a clique of users who have come to accept that their shared behaviour in these forums is somehow normal. But then perhaps the unconscious consequence of any clique is that it feels its own behaviour must be normal? A valid test may have been that only those people who have posted less than 1,000 posts should have contributed to this thread.

Different people have different standards, come from different backgrounds, have different expectations and differing tolerance levels. I personally see very very little on these forums that I'd consider to be abusive or even particularly mean. We're all supposed to be adults here, yes? Acting like an adult doesn't necessarily mean candy coating everything you say. It can also mean having sufficient spine to be able to handle disagreement.

From: Business Mission I've been browsing through this forum, and it seems to have alot of rude posts and snide comments. I'm a new player, and have experience in alot of forums. I just wanted to note that. Does anybody else have this impression? Don't they have rules against making off topic rude comments? Or is this place just undermoderated? I haven't really posted here yet, but I wanted to mention that I do see alot of good helpful topics and posts in this place. I guess I just have to ignore the snide remarks if I see them or if they do them to me. I hate seeing stuff like that. I think the forums here suffer a great deal from a confusion of purpose. Are they an extension of the in-world public chat, a local version of a usenet discussion group, or a product discussion forum, where a company's customers discuss the company's products? The kind of shennanigans people pull in the forums here all the time everyday would never be seen in a fully moderated product discussion forum. To see a forum that is functionally similiar to this one that doesn't have the rudeness and snideness one can look at http://www.igda.org/Forums/.

I never said anything about low standard. I learn a lot about Second Life here and I find it informative. From: Pale Spectre A valid test may have been that only those people who have posted less than 1,000 posts should have contributed to this thread. Damn. I guess I'm invalid because I've been here a while. WOW. This all sounds so very familiar.

Maybe we should all just agree with each other like happy little robots and talk about rainbows and puppy dogs all the time while we lick our ice cream cones and twirl our hair...

From: Cocoanut Koala I've been appalled by these forums since I first arrived here in February of 2005, Business, and said so. People were busy "shunning" another resident and running him out of town on a rail. They managed to do that; hence Aimee's thinking that the forums are much better now. (And would be even better if they could just get rid of "negative" people like me.) The forums still suck, of course.
However, people who take this view are considered self-righteous and admonishing. If you continue along these lines, Business, you will be considered that as well.
And - take a look - Aimee, Forum Queen, has taken this opportunity to make an entire post about me. She thinks the forums are just this terrific place if it weren't for the likes of those like me:

On this page alone you can find these 2 threads: http://forums.secondlife.com/showthread.php?t=82385 /108/b2/82738/1.html I think these are pretty good examples of the good side of the forum community. How anyone can label this "low standard" is sort of a mystery to me.

Yes. People onthe forums can be unneceesarily rude. Snide snugness and pewrsonal attacks are common responses. Typically, but not always, when people run out of arguments they turn to insults. Some people even start with insults. But mostly the debantes are just heated and things blow over.
If someone truly bothers you on an ongoing basis, with constant personal attacks against you or others, you can simply put them on ignore. It works wonders.
I really don't think aimee's post was about anyone. She was just showing how randomly disconeected forums arguments can be.

Maybe so, but I've spent months now being told by others that "it's not about you", whether or not I said it was. As such, all "all about me" posts become by definition about me, and everyone knows it. Kind of a self-fulfilling thing that way. And easy way to put people down, too - by calling them out for it being all about them, but at the same time, if they recongize that dig, then they are just imagining it's all about them. In which case it IS all about them. See how that works? I wish they would just frickin quit it.
In any case, I prefer the doggie and kitty pictures to ALL else on the forums.
