I mean, I can't seem to get a handle on the programming, can't really figure out the building and object creatng. Personally, I just like being in the community, but am I being a burden if I'm not doing anything truly useful?

That there is more than enough reason to stick around.

Don't feel pressured to be a creator of any kind. I know how overwhelming the creation tools can be. It might take a long time to get the hang of it. But even if you never pursue building/scripting, etc, that's no reason to take off from Second Life.

Enjoy Second Life on your own terms. That's basically all there is to it. :)

You are the most important type of person in SL. The consumer who is there to have fun. Without people like you there would be no content creators, real estate barons or tringo presenters.

Literally, you're right. Heh.
But still, maybe I'll hold off on making objects and scripts until I get a slightly more powerful PC than a laptop with Intel Xtreme Graphics, Intel Celeron, 480 MB and a horrid frame rate when running Gunbound.

Pichu, if you'd like to get a hang of the building tools, may i suggest you visit The Ivory Tower of Prims in Noyo? (there are other version/locations, but this is the one i'm familiar with)

just do a search under Find > Places > "Ivory Tower" and it should give you a few places to choose from.

it's a wonderful place for learning how tyo build. it starts off with teaching you the basics about the tools and has some simple building tutorials that will quickly teach you how to get into the swing of things.

from there, you'll be able to build on that knowledge so you can build anything your mind can come up with.

does anyone know where Pichu can find a scripting tutorial in-world? i remember there was a place for scripting particles, but i don't recall the name of it or where it was.

and more important than all of this is what has already been mentioned.. just doing whatever you want is more than enough, even if that means flying around looking at stuff, or shopping, or going to clubs.. or even just sitting around watching the sunrise/sunset. whatever makes you happy in SL is the best thing to do.

i hope you enjoy SL and find your own path.. even if you just sit on the side of it.

Sounds like a nice place... But I did a search under places, and got no results. Hrm...

Well, on the main grid the Ivory Tower of Primitives is located in Noyo near the Noyo Infohub. Welcome to Second Life and have fun wherever you are.

Pichu! OMG! Don't you worry yourself... with a name and a cute icon like that--and are you in a Pichu av too?--you'll go places.

I can relate... if you LIKE being in the community, that'll reflect back. Whatever fascinates you, really get into it, and explore. Enjoy!

As Margaret alluded to, looks like you're actually on Teen Second Life but your forum access isn't set up right! It will be soon. Take care. :)

Who said anyone has to do anything useful? (I made an exploding cow for christsake) - The best thing about Second Life is you do what you want and find your own place.

So your not building stuff - your not scripting stuff - big deal! It's not a requisite.

The question is : Are you enjoying yourself.. if you are - keep doing what your doing.. if you want to learn that other stuff, do it at your own pace.. Bascially, find your 'thing' and enjoy it. When you wanna do something else - do that.

Anyone who says 'this is the one true way to live in SL' is speaking out their arse and doesn't 'get it'.. What it's all about is up to you, and not anyone else.. so just enjoy yourself.

Agreed and agreed. And once you find the "one true way" that is good for you - remember that SL is not like an RPG where you decided up front to be a fighter or a thief, good or evil, big and dumb or small and wily - you can change whenever you want, as often as you want.

That's part of the coolness of SL. You don't /have/ do to anything. You're free to lolligag around until you get the hang of things. I wasn't really into building until one day I decided to make a flying boat (to go with the hovercraft script I had just received). I had time to kill. I learned to cut spheres, butcher torii, and make a fairly decent looking flying boat thing.

Give it time. You don't have to be 'useful'. You don't have to slay dragons, you dont have to save the planet, you just have to be you.

Seriously, just be here for your own fun. Do whatever it is that makes SL enjoyable for you. If the time comes where you really want to make things, start practicing and having a good time with making things. I urge you not to make SL a chore. It really doesn't have to be. Some folks see the business success of others and think they have to enslave themselves to make SL a good time.

What folks don't realize is that a whole lot of people in business in SL are doing it because it's fun for them. Do what's fun for you and one day you may have a shot at monetizing it. If not, no big deal, you're still having fun.

And that's the important bit. Enjoy the creative infinities available to you and you'll be just fine.

Pichu, none of us are useful in the sense that we'd be more than a little missed if we disappeared tomorrow. We simply do what we do while we're here. Many people simply tour the system shopping and attending games and such. They might not consider themselves useful in the sense that they don't provide any content; but they're invaluable to our communities for the dialogue and participation they contribute to the world.

The Grid All Hail The Central Grid wasn't a boring place when only content creators and the odd land baron stuck around for more than a trial period; but it's overwhelming more exciting now with an extremely diverse population.

Take your time, pop around, find some people you like that do things you like to do. Enjoy! That's what most of us are here for.

I'm not disagreeing with what you say - I'm just going to chime in and mentioned that I as a newbie I did (and to some extent still do) feel this way, and to try and work out why it might be the case.

Yes, you're right that you don't "have" to do anything in SL, that people generally are welcoming anyway, and so on, but there's still.. always that nagging feeling. Like, most people in real life would not want or need to design their own house, but if they knew one of their friends was living in a house they'd designed themselves they'd think that was really great and interesting. Then in SL, where lots of people do that, it's frustrating to feel held back from it. And yes, you can feel (or be) held back by lack (or percieved lack) of skill.

The irony of course is that it goes the other way too. For every person who feels useless or jealous because they just get to fly a plane made my someone else instead of THE PLANE I MADE OH WOW, I've probably seen a person who actually built their own plane but then felt it was a waste of time because nobody else seemed to care about it so it was just the same as them imagining it in their own head, since any other scripted plane would have flown in the game just as well.

Sometimes you do just have to deal with it - after all, you can't do everything. I've had to give up on the original av concept I had because I found that no-one was making anything like it, and since I'm bad at that sort of thing anything I made would look crap (and looking crap wasn't part of the original concept :) ). So, I just took what I could get and put up with it, since I've got that area covered by a window half the time anyway. Mind you, I'd have like 20 avs if all the random things I wanted to play got made. :)

I'm reminded of an old story about a person who went to a therapist because she felt bad and shy. She said that a friend had invited her to a party "where absolutely nothing will be expected of you, so don't worry" and she'd refused to go. To which the therapist replied, "Good for you!" She was instantly baffled and asked him to explain, and he said "well, if they're inviting me to a party I'd want them to at least expect something from me." Because he'd realised what the problem was - that the reason she turned down that invitation wasn't because she was so shy she couldn't operate even on a "no expectations" situation, but because subconsciously she knew that her shyness would only be worsened by the feeling that everyone at the party was treating her as a charity case - and she had no motivation to try and overcome her shyness if that was all she'd get.

It's the same thing here. If someone is saying these things because they are feeling frustrated by the lack of that kind of skill, then saying "it's ok, you don't need it, just have fun.." isn't going to help - it's correct, no doubt about that, but it isn't the kind of thing they want to hear so much.

Hey, someone HAS to buy L$'s! :-)

If everyone was just scripting, building, creating, selling, who would do that? :-)

(Before anyone starts flaming, JOOKE and ironizing a bit :-)

It took me well over a year to even get scripting. So this early in your SL career you probably don't know what you'll be good at or enjoy. So take in a bit of everything, and when the need to make strikes you'll be ready to learn.
