As some of you may know my best friend IRL is a gay guy. Well, it's his birthday tomorrow! We asked him what he wanted and he said, oh, don't waste your money on frivolous crap... just download some random movie off the net and burn it on a CD. Yes, I know very well gay people don't necessarily want a gay-themed movie But I know for a fact that my friend loves those. I used to download stuff for him so his mom wouldn't find out. What are some popular gay-themed movies I could get for him?

Hmm, not sure what you mean by "gay themed"... Some of my favorites: The Wedding Banquet Boys Don't Cry The Crying Game (omg, are those movies really that old... I need to get out more) or do you mean the other kind of gay themed movies?

Gay Films!
11-18-2005 08:46
Eggy! Two of my dear friends is a filmmaker and in the gay genre (I hate to say that for fear it stigmatizes them s a *only* gay filmmakers, but thus far he's only made gay themed films.) Don't know if I'm chiming in late on this but do check out the following:
Edge Of Seventeen & Trick.
They're hillarious, endearing, unoffensive and have great soundtracks!
I enjoyed them completely!

Thanks for the input guys, I'll see what I can find Gay-themed meant, in my mind, movies depicting love stories between two men, or movies that illustrate the controversy surrounding homosexuality, gay pride, discrimination, etc. My friend is both very romantic and very political

Funny how many of the ones listed so far are more drag or trans-themed. I haven't seen many gay-themed films, but two stories that I've liked a lot lately are:
A Home at the End of the World
and the mature (not prurient) portrayal of a gay relationship in Six Feet Under.

From: Zapoteth Zaius How about an SL subscription I've tried to get him on SL, but it's difficult. Portugal is a very backwards little country... most people have crappy, expensive, metered internet. I once paid over $150 in bandwidth surcharges...

"Happy Together" is a very interesting film.
"Inspired by The Buenos Aires Affair, a novel by Argentinian Manuel Puig, this is the first of Wong's films to be shot outside Asia. It is also the first to feature at its core a gay relationship. In Cannes, Wong will be competing with such directors as France's Luc Besson (The Fifth Element) and Germany's Wim Wenders (The End of Violence) for the Palme d'Or, a prize that some see as more prestigious than an Oscar"

In Alexander the hero is portrayed as being bisexual and while it wasn't very good there was quite a lot of bronzed and oiled muscle to feast your eyes on. It might have actually been much better if the editors hadn't hacked it into a disjointed series of flashbacks and flashforwards.
Then there's Buffy the Vampire Slayer where, from season four (or is it five?) onwards Willow enters a devoted relationship with another woman. Of course, in a show where the characters routinely date vampires, werewolves, demons, pliant pleasure robots, and monster insect queens, this can hardly be considered controversial.

Priscilla, Queen of the Desert is definitely a great movie, I really liked it. Also included in this same film genre is Hedwig and the Angry Inch. It's a bit depressing in parts, but still engrossing and uplifting.

Hm. While the depiction of the gay couple in it is a bit stereotypical, I have a soft spot for The Birdcage. And, despite the stereotyping, it is an overall funny, positive movie.
Depending on your tastes, you might prefer the French original, but I actually like the US remake.

Honestly, while its sort of cute, I think the movie is a lil dumb. It's about a gay man who is head over heels with....sex. Then AIDs comes about and free sex vanishes. In the end, he settles with Safe Sex w/ an AIDs infected man. The Star Trek dude was a gay rich man with a boytoy, but, hey, Im a Dr. Daniel Jackson man myself. -Ayame Sapeur<3
