hehe, I was just going to say that. Both Windows and Mac OS's were ripped off from PARC way back when. Didn't Apple just come out with a two button mouse? Those thieves!

Both OS's have thier plusses and minuses. The cult of Mac is quite bizarre and a little creepy. A tool is a tool.

bah, they both copied xerox oh so long ago. Anyway, as long as they both wrote their own code, they can steal ideas for all their worth .

This is what's known as the Xerox Caveat. It allows all operating-system related intellectual property theft, unethical business practices, and monopolistic behavior to be dismissed with a simple mention of Xerox.

Well, Ulrika, all of this reminds me of a fun photoshop photo I saw showing one of the Jewish settlers being moved from the Gaza strip: "... but we stole it first!"

Apple is not the source of all sweetness and light, and Microsoft is not a pit of total evil, and vice-versa. The only thing keeping Apple from acting exactly like Microsoft is them not being on top.

I have to agree- neither M$ nor Apple are innocent. No such thing in the OS market.

ya, but I already stated my views on intellectual property . It's the implementation, not the idea that is your property. Not to say I don't think ideas should be property, I just can't understand a practical way to do it since for anyone else to know or have use of your idea, you have to share it, but they don't have to know how you made it work. It's sort of a pandora's box thing. Once the idea is there, it's viral. It will work its way into your thinking so deep that it's almost impossible to find an alternative idea, or to avoid "borrowing" little bits from the idea for your own ideas. Also, intellectual property always strikes me as very arbitrary as it is frequently completely dependant on timing. MS probably would have come up with it eventually, millions of people have probably wished for it before (hence, it's development in the frist place ), but mac got it done first.

The people who shout "Micorosoft Monopoly" must not be watching the news lately. They're losing ground quickly and a lot of lifetime Windows users, myself included, will soon be making a switch to Mac now that Apple is starting to make some better decisions about their hardware.

Apple did not invent the concept of translucent windows, either - skinning applications such as WindowBlinds have offered them going back all the way to Windows 95.

Global searching not only of files but of all kinds of content on the computer also not created first by Apple - Google's Desktop Search came to market before Apple's Spotlight feature, as did the MSN and Yahoo versions. A fully searchable, object based file system has been in the works since Windows 95 - the Cairo project, which later became WinFS - portions of which are in Vista.

Apple is currently embroiled in two lawsuits over its patent infringement in iTunes:

Additionally, Apple faces a patent lawsuit from creative over the interface on the iPod, as the hierarchial navigation system used in the iPod was first used in Creative's MP3 players.

Don't forget that Netscape ripped off Internet Explorer from Microsoft. They were on board with the WWW thing years before anyone else. Except for Xerox, of course.

Actually both Netscape and Internet Explorer were based on Mosaic. As far as the Creative patent, Apple failed in their attempts to get the patent because of Creative's prior art - Apple tried to patent it as well.

I'm sorry sir, but you're confusing Creative with Xerox.

I really don't understand the cultish behavior of Macophiles. I just use whatever tool best suits my needs and as a long time animator who could never afford an SGI, windows with cheap and relatively powerful PC hardware fit the bill while Apple lagged far behind in delivering horsepower. I'm glad that's finally changing. Maybe Apple will finally bring their prices down from the stratosphere too, but I doubt it.
