Actually, for four weeks, they have been doing work on the seven or eight 14 story flats here, including the one we live in. This work is noisy. It is irritating. And it stops me sleeping. Yes, it's stressful. But you don't have to listen to it. You can go out while they work. You can wear earplugs. You can just put on headphones and turn the volume up full. Complaining about it won't help. As the person earlier said, houses don't build themselves, and they don't keep themselves from falling down . So I think we could all put up with the noise considering the fact that while you're complaining, there are people out there, in the heat, putting up with the noise at CLOSE QUARTERS, breaking their backs in order to do the work you find so irritating.

Well we do have three degrees of hot here....hot....f*&^in hot and too hot to f*^%

This is why we have central airconditioning in Florida......so it's never, never, ever too hot to f*^% . ;)

That reply was extraordinarily condescending and I'm treating it with the utter contempt it deserves.

I'm not talking 14 floor blocks of flats, that's another story ( without the e ).

No-one is breaking their back sitting in the comfort of of a soft chair in a mini digger simply moving small lumps of earth from the ground to a skip! If, instead of one man with a digger, there was 2 with shovels doing it by hand, THEN they might even break a sweat let alone their backs! And it would get done a lot faster with lot less noise and a lot less mess left at the end of it. A mess which still has to be cleaned up by hand and makes the job twice as long, making the whole excercise of using the digger in the first place inappropriate.

No-one is breaking their back cutting small red house bricks in half with a disc cutter! All the while covering all the cars in the locality, AND in my case (which is WHY I felt like shouting in the forum) filling my house with a layer brick dust that took hours to clean up.

Now as it happens I did not complain to them for doing that, other than pointing out that I'd like fair warning in future so I can close the windows in the car and the house! I've learned from the experience of rebuilding a derelict house that complaing to builders is totally futile excercise! You have to be nice to them, they have very fragile ego's!

One of the side points I was hoping would be picked up on that goes hand in hand with the causes of a lot of unnecessary noise pollution is innapropriate use of powertools.
Especially when they take longer to set up and clean up than simply getting on and doing a job by hand. The use of power tools in so many situations is not justifiable. I'd love to see a good statistic on this one...

How many people do you know use a petrol mower on a lawn the size of of pocket handkerchief ?

How many times have you spent 30 minutes to get out your powersaw to cut one piece of wood that would have taken 2 minutes if you'd used a handsaw ? ( I've watched a certain someone in this household do that so often ;) )

What's the point of car alarms that go off all night when everyone just ignores them ?

Why does every single reversing vehicle have to scream "I'm reversing I'm reversing" when everyone can see it's reversing! ( in this particular case, if you're so worried about saving one or two lives why not join an anti war campaign, you'd be doing far more use there )

Why use a food mixer to scramble an egg ?

hehe, I'm enjoying this now, very stress relieving ranting on forums isnt it, I think I wanted just a little sympathy but I should've known better! :D

What really gets me is the people who turn their car alarms on while on the ferry... and then the alarm goes off while the people are up in the passenger deck for the 20 minute crossing, leaving those who remain in their vehicles to curse them and think evil thoughts about them.

I was cursing some birds this morning for being too close to my window and making it impossible to sleep, all that chattering and chirping.

Got a full arsenal, thanks ;) , not to mention two cats. One of those cats brought a bird in the house at 5:30 am on Sat morning and let it go to fly around the house. Never a dull moment. *sighs*

then get a dog to chase the cats away from their food so they hunt and eat birds so the birds don't pester you :D (yes I know this is awfully "Wylie Coyoteish";)

That reply was extraordinarily condescending and I'm treating it with the utter contempt it deserves.

It wasn't meant to be. I apologise if it came off as such. I was merely pointing out that these people have to deal with the noise right next to them. As well as that, sitting in those machines is not comfortable; I did it myself once, and it is very hot, it is very noisy, and it is very uncomfortable. Using the shovels would be much harder, which would make the company liable to being sued if anyone got hurt. And in case you didn't notice, I was sympathetic. Because of those people outside, I have not had more than three hours sleep each night for the last week. You, sirrah, are very rude, and don't take time to notice what people are saying. I was merely pointing out the facts. You had no right to treat me as if I was a criminal. I am merely a normal person pointing out their own opinion. If you don't like it, that's not my problem.

Laukosargas Svarog, I suggest you spend a day working on a construction site in blistering heat before you rant about how easy they have it.

"Why does every single reversing vehicle have to scream "I'm reversing I'm reversing" when everyone can see it's reversing!"

I am going to imagine you sitting in front of me right now. Then I am going to imagine staring at you with a deep, soul-destroying, withering expression as I calmly utter two simple words: "blind people".

Back to topic: Whatever happened to shovels and handsaws? Well, the same thing that happened to harvesting crops with scythes.

And the heat? It was pretty damn hot today, and I spent a big portion of it clad head to toe in thick, heavy, black leathers doing my motorbike compulsary basic training. Sweat much? Oh yes.

Musuko.

There was the time that an apartment complex I lived in decided to increase security by placing streetlights all around the edges of the property. My bedroom window happened to look out over an open field...you guessed it, a giant streetlamp right outside My window. 1 BB gun...$20, 1 pack of BB's....$1, a good night's sleep...priceless
