Update from me. I did let him go, but between my neighbors yard and their neighbors. I hate spiders but he was over my size/ kill ratio. size/kill ratio = if they are so big that I can ID their insides when squished, I wont do it. One bug that will send me up on a chair screaming like a little girl is the jerusaleum bug. Also known as jerusaleum cricket or "potato bug". I swear it's an alien.

I used to live in extreme West Texas and I have to say that some of the bugs there were quite bizarre and scary looking. Here are a couple examples of things we'd find around our back porch. A Vinegaroon. Close relative of the scorpids, but no venom. They will however, shoot out acetic acid (vinegar) when threatened. Stinky and ugly, best shooed away and not stepped on or hit with a newspaper, because well, they smell! A big old Desert Millepede. I used to be fascinated by these, and just sit and watch them meander around. They are big! Like as big around as my pinky finger in some cases. Black Widow spider. I would get rid of them, yet they would always reappear a couple of months later... Scorpion. Almost unchanged in 450 million years! My ex was stung by one on her big toe coming home one night. Drama! This type is not usually deady, unless you're allergic. It's like a bad bee sting. So, who wants to move to El Paso?!!

Just based on insect life? Me In Austin, I have found these in the house, garage, and yard: (nb-this is not my hand, but the insect I found was about this big) http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b287/cacoseraph/pals/yikes/Dscn0267.jpgOne of these was lurking in the water meter hole. It had just eaten a frog. http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/preserves/images/fotospr8.jpgThis little guy was in the dining room http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/preserves/images/fotoscr2.jpg

Spiders are our friends! They eat bugs! I found this little guy in the garden a couple years ago. They're all over North America, and make a very distinctive web.
