Found this in my backyard. I have never in my lifetime seen a spider like this. What is it?

or Phidippus clarus:


Jumping spiders.

I'm no expert though... take a browse through that site and see if anythnig else matches better.

So, can I let him go? I was afraid he might be a biter so I caught him. I dont really want to kill him, but dont want anyone in the house at risk for injury either.

That clown spider is freaky looking..

I think the only harmful to human spiders in the U.S are the black widow, and the brown recluse.. both slick looking with long skinny legs..

If it's in my house and hairy I leave it be, we have those jumpy things all over the place.. If they get near anything with a reflection they will freak out and stare at it for hours.. hopping and bopping around on it..

I've never seen a spider that big in person. Ever.

One time i thought a cockroach was in my room. It ended up being a junebug. None the less, it involved a stand-off in which it blocked off the exit to my door followed by single-footing a leap across my bed and landing on the other side of the doorframe.

This one is quite common in crawl spaces under houses here in SC. It can jump several feet but is harmless.
