For the record, Hitler was a Catholic... Stalin had a Catholic upbringing, though what effect that had on his adult life is debatable, it's of interest to note that he made moves to replace worship of a god with "worship" of the state, effectively making Communism into a God... I've no idea about Mao. He's not usually in these kind of "questions" so I've not researched him.

Don't confuse Jauani with facts. He doesn't like that sort of thing.

Meh.

The question was most influential. Ayn Rand is influential, but compared to killing millions of people, starting a world war, founding a communist country of two billion people...? Not even a blip on the radar.

Let's differentiate between philosophical atheists and atheists-of-convenience. Stalin was definitely the latter - he saw religion as a tool with which to manipulate the masses (which is/was true). He banned the Church when he felt threatened by its power.

But he didn't understand the first thing about atheism or the philosophy of non belief. Lumping him in with people like Bertrand Russell and Ayn Rand is not accurate.

As for Hitler, he never was an atheist. That's just a strawman.

Carl Sagan wasn't an athiest.

O rly?

From: someone
"The idea that God is an oversized white male with a flowing beard who sits in the sky and tallies the fall of every sparrow is ludicrous. But if by 'God' one means the set of physical laws that govern the universe, then clearly there is such a God. This God is emotionally unsatisfying... it does not make much sense to pray to the law of gravity." - Carl Sagan

"It is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring." - Carl Sagan

"I would love to believe that when I die I will live again, that some thinking, feeling, remembering part of me will continue. But as much as I want to believe that, and despite the ancient and worldwide cultural traditions that assert an afterlife, I know of nothing to suggest that it is more than wishful thinking." - Carl Sagan, The Demon-Haunted World

"The world is so exquisite, with so much love and moral depth, that there is no reason to deceive ourselves with pretty stories for which there's little good evidence. Far better, it seems to me, in our vulnerability, is to look Death in the eye and to be grateful every day for the brief but magnificent opportunity that life provides." - Carl Sagan, Billions and Billions

"God made me an atheist. Who are you to question his wisdom?"

"For most of human history we have searched for our place in the cosmos. Who are we? What are we? We find that we inhabit an insignificant planet of a hum-drum star lost in a galaxy tucked away in some forgotten corner of a universe in which there are far more galaxys than people. We make our world significant by the courage of our questions, and by the depth of our answers." - Carl Sagan [

As has been pointed out before, Hitler was NOT an atheist (note the spelling of "atheist";)

From his own words in Mein Kampf: "In recent years things have gone so far that patriotic circles, in god-forsaken blindness of their religious strife, could not recognise the folly of their conduct even from the fact that atheist Marxist newspapers advocated the cause of one religious denomination or the other.."

Hitler also outlawed freethinker and atheist groups in Germany in 1933.

Here's $1L Jauani. Buy some facts.

Philip Rosedale is an influential atheist :p

Seriously though, anyone who muses excitedly about mind uploading is soooooo thumbing his nose at God. And there's also that noodly appendage on lindenlab.com's homepage.

Haven't seen James Watson mentioned yet.

"If we don't play God, who will?"

Not entirely irrelevant to SL either if you think about it...

As for influential, wars and all that are all very well, but in the long run I think the discovery of DNA will have more of an impact on humanity.

So Watson gets my vote

I'm not sure why anybody would think Hitler was an atheist, if anything he was a religious fanatic.

“Most influential” is kind of an ambiguous term. Politics, technology, economics all are intertwined. WW2 was by far the largest event of mankind in the 20th century. It was the dawn of new technologies including electronic computers and atomic weapons.

Joseph Stalin did have a major influence on the war being that the Nazis may have not been defeated if it wasn't for Russian soldiers. Now saying that, Stalin didn't have much of a choice since Hitler invaded his country. Stalin was incredibly ruthless however and was able to stomp Hitler's armies with massive suicidal attacks from his own troops. I believe many leaders would not have resorted to the effective brutality of Stalin.

Albert Einstein may have shortened the duration of WW2 with his encouragement to Roosevelt to build Atomic weapons. His theories (with many proven to be fact) have changed the world of physics and may lay the foundation of deep space travel for future generations.

Larry Flint has had a huge impact on US first amendment rights that have made a profound influence on the multi billion dollar pornography industry. His Supreme Court case changed the entire (square and porn) entertainment industry shaping the internet as we know it. Including games like SL.

Bill Gate should receive honorable mention however if it wasn't for Apple Computer constant fuck ups. Bill would just be a footnote in antique computer design. If the founders of Apple are atheist I would put them ahead of Bill on this list.

Bah! I just got suspended from the forum for three days Jauani! :D

You know my thread that was an exact copy of this one that replaced the words "athiest" with "NAMBLA member" and substituted my name for your name? I received a suspension by email for it, when a resmod interpreted the thread as a "poll started to attack another resident". Apparently, the line between general tomfoolery and a personal attack is not a clear one, at least for some of the less-adept res mods. :D

Anyways, I'm not sure why I can still post but I want to let you know that I'm sorry if that hurt your feelings and that I'll see you in three days. ;)

Theories are not facts, they are explanations created by humans that describe, to the best of our abilities of deduction, the world around us. Theories evolve, facts cannot change over time.

lol! hitler outlawed everything that stood against him

from http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/mischedj/ca_hitler.html

Just How Honest Was Hitler Anyway?

It is important to be able to identify the difference between Hitler's public speeches and writing and what he really thought. A devious politician leading a nominally Christian country like 1930s Germany will say lots of Christian-sounding stuff to maintain popularity. Mein Kampf illustrates Hitler's views on propaganda:
  1. "To whom should propaganda be addressed? … It must be addressed always and exclusively to the masses… The function of propaganda does not lie in the scientific training of the individual, but in calling the masses' attention to certain facts, processes, necessities, etc., whose significance is thus for the first time placed within their field of vision. The whole art consists in doing this so skilfully that everyone will be convinced that the fact is real, the process necessary, the necessity correct, etc. But since propaganda is not and cannot be the necessity in itself … its effect for the most part must be aimed at the emotions and only to a very limited degree at the so-called intellect… it's soundness is to be measured exclusively by its effective result". (Main Kampf, Vol 1, Ch 6 and Ch 12)
As an example of Hitler's honestly, consider the following from a letter by Hitler to the French fascist Hervé and published in the Nazi Völkischer Beobachter on October 26, 1930 [Heiden, Der Fuehrer, p. 414] :
  1. "I think I can assure you that there is no one in Germany who will not with all his heart approve any honest attempt at an improvement of relations between Germany and France. My own feelings force me to take the same attitude... The German people has the solemn intention of living in peace and friendship with all civilized nations and powers... And I regard the maintenance of peace in Europe as especially desirable and at the same time secured, if France and Germany, on the basis of equal sharing of natural human rights, arrive at a real inner understanding... The young Germany, that is led by me and that finds its expression in the National Socialist Movement, has only the most heartfelt desire for an understanding with other European nations."
This is from the guy who started World War II.

In a similar vein, consider this, from a speech in the Reichstag on 30 Jan. 1939:
  1. "Amongst the accusations which are directed against Germany in the so called democracies is the charge that the National Socialist State is hostile to religion. In answer to that charge I should like to make before the German people the following solemn declaration:
    1. No one in Germany has in the past been persecuted because of his religious views, nor will anyone in the future be so persecuted..."
Hmm… would you trust this guy's public announcements?

We follow not Christ, but Horst Wessel,
Away with incense and Holy Water,
The Church can go hang for all we care,
