I really don't appreciate you claiming it is unethical of me, or any less ethical than anyone else, to use another database. It is not. Keys are used in many many ways in SL. Storing or having a way to quickly retrieve these keys is becoming more necessary by the day.
I suspect, that this person who started this thread is an alt of Tcoz Bach, an irrational privacy wonk, who pops up every few months to gripe about this and other related databases.

Here's a partial list of threads that are worth checking out (seriously):
  1. Compile and Publish, on the public Internet, an "Age Play" list of AVs!
  2. Name2Key Database
  3. Anyone using the Name2Key database?
  4. Get Me Off That Key List

The last thread is worth reading for the personal threats alone (DoS, calling ISPs, etc.).

Thanks for the links Ulrika, most of them are a good read, at least for the first few pages. :)

Oh btw, every time one of these threads pops up... it's like a reminder that I need to resubmit more keys from my cache to the name2key database ;)

I wish to be removed and kept out of the key database of Ulrika. I never consented to join it. I wish to be removed.

Done.

Note that I have the only name2key database where an opt-out list is maintained and, of course, use is without cost.

Nah, I just found myself in the database again. I'm still in there (Ulrika's DB)

We need a properly managed database more than ever! Just look how this opt out is handled, and a lot of other databases make no provision whatsoever for opt out :(

You might try giving it about a day at least? Not that 10 mins isn't a long time or anything  .

Time is irrelevant. Ulrika said "done", which I take to mean "done". But it was not "done", I was still in the database. So when Ulrika thinks it's "done", it's in fact not "done" at all. So my data is v. secure, and being well looked after.

And I'm still in there now. Guess Ulrika's system has no opt out either.

Don't be a petulant child.

I added you to the opt-out list and it will be reflected the next time the database is rebuilt, which should be 18:30 PST.

There exists an open name-to-key database at my website here. It supports an opt-out list for those who wish to be omitted.

Heya - I've had a couple of queries return what appear to be invalid (or at least no longer assigned) keys. If I can confirm this wasn't some LSL bug or similar, do you have an automated method for reporting bad key/name combinations? Or can I drop a note-card on you?

christ, if the lindens are reading this, just incorporate llName2Key(); and be done with it already =P

a key, using in world processes, takes seconds to get. seriously, i don't see anything that your key can be used maliciously for anyway. If it's about privacy concerning your key being published on an external website, LL incorporating llName2Key(); will solve that issue as Ulrika's database will be useless at that point anyway. If it's about spam, i could just as easily pull up your profile using your name and drop something on you anyway. If it's about using keys to determine online status, IMing a person or searching online avatars only with your name will give the same info.

just my two cents

Yes. Send me an IM, email, or even a notecard.
