This says it all. Some job security you got there. :)

Promotion to a second management position and then lateral movement to a third with more responsibility.

Your selective reading won't apply to me, sorry :p .

Life really isn't that complicated. The fact is even single moms with 4 kids seem to be able to get to work on time. Why? Because they need the job.

If they have 4 kids, chances are, they're gonna be late at some point. It's simply not possible to plan ahead for all the things that can go wrong when you have children, rely on babysitters, daycare and school for their care while you're at work and get to work on time EVERY single day. There is bound to be at least one day when she is late.

I know this because I was a single mother with one child for nine years and I was late to work more than once due to child care issues.

Hey Kevn, here's something that might really irk you.

Right now, you have at least one person just like me who works for you. You think they're your star employee.

Hehe good call. And thanks ;).

It's also because he's put a lot of stock in the "the way things are" concept you're trained into in schools these days. People like him HATE people like me because they work their asses off and expect it of others, and despise people who are happier than they who accomplish more and do it without any real effort.

I would disagree. You see, I find it more appealing to be my own boss. The reason I don't like lazy, self-important workers is they are a drain on my business. I have spent much time and money training them, buying equipment etc yet if I feel they are even slightly unconcerned with the businesses well-being I'll send them down the road.

If they want a good job here they will care. Or I'll find someone who does care.

You may not realize it, but there are plenty of good caring workers out there. Smart people who are ambitious. Don't for a single second think there is no one who can walk in and replace you tomorrow. There are people who know a lot more than you do about the actual formulas etc. You are way too puffed up, the pop will be a bad thing when, not if, it comes.

Anyhow, have fun, we need a better topic, this one is dead... :)

If the boss can be there on time to catch you, you should be able to be there on time too. Set your clock to wake you 30 minutes earlier and take your time.

Excuses are for the irresponsible.

I'm tired of excuses from the lazy people who think they are indispensable.

I think if one wants to work at ones leisure one should be self-employed.

I know, I'm no fun... :)

Oh look! A new sissyboy slave for Squee! :D

You would be wrong, I can do every single job in the office. I find it difficult to supervise without being able to step in and take over.

*giggles* I think I popped Kevn's little "I'm the ruler of my domain" bubble and he's trying to reassert himself.

The people that you think care? They're likely just like me.

The people you think don't care? They're terrified of you and care more than most, but just flatly know they're doing poorly.

And you must be in an at-will state because if you're not, firing someone for not caring about the job, though they might perform well, would get you in Wrongful Termination hot water. It still can, even in At-Will states.

Sure, there's someone who COULD replace me. But they are likely also like me. Plus that would be additional training and other costs, plus the learning curve to understand what I've established. The cost of replacing me at this point is comfortably high, losing me would tank morale because i've dug myself in so well....I'm pretty safe. In fact, I'll be the one to decide when I leave the company, when I go back to school to get what i need for a job I do care about: game development.

Just remember...if you own a company, you are completely dependant on your employees. You may have the title and the office, and you may own the business, but by necessity of having them, they own you.

I get the feeling that my company has just a few more positions in it than yours.

You have no company. You have a job doing what you don't like to do. You do both yourself and your employer a disservice. Design games on your own. You might be the next big game company. Then you would understand caring about profits so you can pay all those caring people who hold out their hand on payday, regardless of whether there was any profit that period.

The good thing about working in a big company is one can hide ones lack of production easily. When the boss is the owner things are different.

Did anyone else get the feeling off his first sentence that I made him cry?

My perpetual pay increases seem to indicate I do my employer great service.

The President and VP's seem to agree.

I'll wait till after school for the game development :P.

Just don't forget: next time you're "paying all of those caring people", half of them (if not more) are just very, very good at bullshitting you.

Professionalism, after all, is often the most accepted form of pretense.

Kevin, your time is better served building your business and taking care of your customers and employees.

I have a tremendous amount of respect for the things you have said in this thread.

I wish you great fortune for you, your employees and your business

Last time I got some lip for being late to a 10am meeting (I slept late) I shrugged and replied:

"It's 10am, and you haven't checked your email yet?"

(Oh look! An email sent at 3AM with all the stuff you desperately needed finished... and a note saying I would be late as a result.)

--

A while back a co-worker asked why I was showing later and later.
I replied, quite honestly, "Because I'm tired of working 12 hour days."

Fortunately, those days are long past, I'm back to 8 or 9 hour a day now. :)

Huh? How can I be late? I'm still here from yesterday!

What I love is how many employees are restricted from viewing email on the clock.

THen get in trouble for not getting an email in time.

I was four minutes late the other day. The manager asked why I was late, and I told him, "It took a while to key your entire car." Everyone had a laugh. It doesn't matter what you tell them, because they don't actually care why you are late.

The bastard went and checked his car.

I don't know if I've ever made an excuse for being late. If I'm late, I'm late. It doesn't matter. If I don't do the work, then complain.

Also, I thought you were like, 22, or something.

And you own a company?

ok.. this morning I had a problem with my motorbike, it made me all of 3 minutes late for work (wow - the world may end now). My Manager came up to me and asked me why I was late.

my reply was along the lines of....

Upon my approach to the building, I was 10 minutes early, I saw a bizarre object hovering above me. I found myself being sucked into it. there I met some aliens who prepared me for a probing. Before they carried it out they realised I was not the specimen they were after. I woke up outside the building, bewildered and confused. Next time I am abducted I shall get them to send you a note explaining.

He was not amused, but then with all the extra hours without extra pay I do, all the calls I take when I am on holiday or off sick, neither was I :D

So.. no more extra hours without pay for you! Turn off your telephone when you are on holiday or off sick.
Your boss does not deserve you.

What an asshat

I refuse to talk about asshats I've worked with in the past because in my mind, it validates them and I refuse to let them exist any longer than they need to (that, and I'm pregnant and don't want my kid to be born mad hehe) :p

:D

congratulations!:))

thats why I am working to rule. I show up on time, I take a full hour lunch, I leave on time. I turn my phones off when I get home, and I only take proper emergency calls when I am on call. My work day is meant to be 8am-5pm I usually work 7.30am - about 7pm then spend my weekends on call (because I am the only none drinker in the office I volenteer). he is finding it hard already and this is the second day, he had to make the coffee, he is closing down the office at night (I usually do the washing up and stuff too), all left to him. Whats more my colleagues are banding together and doing the same. He will fall in line within a week muahaha
