Move to California? Nah - At least no SoCal (Just when you thought it was safe to come out of the water) California storm spawns twister 12/29/2004 LOS ANGELES (AP) — The storm that's been dumping rain on California since Monday spawned a tornado in the Los Angeles area on Wednesday. Gino McGowens asses the damage to his Inglewood, Calif., home after wind blew a tree onto it. By Stefano Paltera, AP The tornado struck the Los Angeles suburbs of Inglewood and Ladera Heights around 1:30 a.m., ripping the roof off a house, snapping trees and damaging cars, but causing no injuries. Dan Keaton, a National Weather Service meteorologist, confirmed that it was a twister after examining the damage. Resident Derek Williams told KCAL-TV he awakened when the tornado blasted out his bedroom window. "I heard sort of a low rumbling noise, sort of like a freight train and shortly after that, I heard a ripping noise - obviously, that was my roof," Williams said. "Thank God everyone was OK in the house." "I didn't expect a tornado out here in Los Angeles. I mean, that's back in the Midwest where I'm from," he said. In its 4 p.m. PT Tuesday storm alert, the Los Angeles area National Weather Service office had said that storm could bring "intense rainfall events, small hail, local wind gusts over 50 mph, waterspout and funnel cloud formation as well as isolated small tornadoes." _____________________

My preferred option: "Stay at the computer until the window behind me breaks, then run to the innermost room."

Here is my home paten recipe for Tornado Defence.
(Precaution: this is not to be tried near any Denny's Resturant. so no offence is meant) Take one: man and or woman full of adreniline. or full of "alchy-hol" Take one: Prodding stick. Take one: amplifier that straps onto the mouth. Take precautions as you slowly set the man/woman on the street. Target your drunk adreniline bursting; friend in the way of the Tornado while wearing ear plugs for if you wont like whats coming out of their mouth. neither will the Tornado. Set him/her/it on rampage for Tornado. (WARNING: If said "it" is over 80 be prepared for it to go off course and head for the nearest morning sunday brunch and bingo convention center near you) if everything doesn't work as planned, or you have none of the above make sure to bring: ONE: paper bag. to put over your head. and ensue the ostrich night time effect. (WARNING: you may end up in a worse place then a path of a tornado. always have a buddy) _____________________

I remember reading about a Mayor in the Tornado Alley area of the U.S. who wanted to surround the city with trailer parks. Suffice it to say it didn't go over too well.

My preferred option: "Stay at the computer until the window behind me breaks, then run to the innermost room." My husband thinks this solution works well for hurricanes as well. Fortunately we had shutters up. But during Wilma, when I heard shit being torn off the roof I literally had to bring the computer with us to the innermost room to get him to follow. Makes a good night light and the battery lasts about 2 hours. . _____________________

My first-hand experience with tornados so far has worked pretty well.
1st one: I was about 8 or 9 yrs old. My mom grabbed me, my sister and her best friend from up the street (no time to send her home) and a couple of big mattress-like cushions, we piled into an interior hallway in the basement under the cushions with a battery operated transister (yes it was that long ago) radio and a flashlight. 20 minutes (maybe less I was young) later, we heard the all clear siren, went upstairs and found a tree uprooted in the yard. It missed our house, our neighbor's garage and the phone lines. The touch down was less than a mile from our house. (35 miles south of downtown chicago, in 'burbs) 2nd one: Didn't know there was one nearby until later. Was in the car, on my way to college Freshman year, already a nervous wreck so it wouldn't have impacted my day. New construction on campus was damage, 2 workers killed when a beam toppled on them. (I57 between Kankakee and Champaign-Urbana) 3rd, 4th, 5th or maybe only 3rd: I was driving, and me and my buddy keep seeing them/it off in a field on the passenger side (to the right) when the heavy rain/hail would blow aside every so often. We were both moving in the same direction and the radio reports had us in the middle of the huge (100 mile radius) storm, so we figured we might as well keep going. I was helping him move back home from college, so the trunk was strapped down (and therefore open) around his gear, so I had a trunk full of water when we got to Chicago where it was dry and the sun was shining. (south of Janesville Wisconsin through to some point over Illinois state line) 4th or maybe 6th: Driving again, at work, w/a trolley full of passengers on Lake Shore Drive for those of you who know, southbound at about Division St. (Inner drive/Sheridan technically) heading to the Water Tower for a drop off. 3 waterspouts appeared on the lake, they looked to be over the breakers. Waterspouts are tornados over the lake btw. I just had the passengers keep an eye on them and floored it. Got to Water Tower, let them all out and the rain started pouring down, no wind, no tornado. The real answer: Live inside Chicago city limits. Only one touch down in recorded history (150 odd years), was minor, and on the far south western edge of city limits (less than a mile in). Head to basement. Hold a metal umbrella over head in flat open field. (err that's a joke)PIE! Something swirly of course! With bits sprinkled on top! ![]() However, I do live in a buiding w/an underground basement, hallway space for all the occupants w/out windows. Wonder if there's a cable connection down there? ![]() _____________________

I grew up in Oklahoma, and in 1999 I went back to Oklahoma City and saw the aftermath of the May 1999 tornado that is considered the most powerful one ever.
Tornadoes are no joke. P2 _____________________

Foreknowledge is the best defense against natural disaster.
Use a weather radio perhaps? Or just keep pets. They normally get restless when something is amiss. Maybe a grizzly bear in the living room would help. |

If you see a tornado coming, shut your eyes tightly. It can't see you if you can't see it! It's a well known fact that tornadoes head right for you if they don't like the way you're looking at them. People who live in trailer parks are notorious for giving tornadoes dirty looks. For added protection, stand in the middle of an open field with your fingers in your ears while shouting "lalalalalalalalala" as loud as you can.
