Isn't this a pic of that woman who protests the US military being in other countries? Hmm.. the t-shirt image has: a US flag --- fo context I suppose. a peace symbol ON the flag - to modify the flag --- wow, the US as a "peacemonger" "Lennon" in letters - to further contextualize the "peace" concept.. Um, the Adminsitration says it's actions ARE serving the purpose of effectuating global peace. a picture of Lennon embedded in the flag - a nation from which he benefitted greatly and decided to live in - thus apparently seeing it somehow as a "more positive" social environment than his own homeland and the two finger peace symbol - DOH... further reinforcing the US as a "peacemonger" image. Methinks the woman needs to reconsider what she's "protesting" and what image she actually portrays. Ironic interpretation of the image, eh?

Don't see any mixed messages from my camera angle. That woman is Cindy Sheehan, who lost her son in the war in Iraq and as a result of her experiences has become a peace activist.

You've obviously read right past the "US as peacemonger" comment.

Yes, because decrying this administration means you hate America.

Great logic. Follows. Really.

Funnily enough, I "read" the shirt's image as an extension of the wish John Lennon had for peace.
I guess in some ways I'm too cynical, and in others, not enough.

I don't see how your interpretation is ironic. Pessimistic, melancholy, despairing or cynical might be better descriptors.

Talk about BS
04-12-2006 20:21
From: Picabo Hedges Isn't this a pic of that woman who protests the US military being in other countries? 1 Mrs. Sheehan does not protest the US military, in or out of other countries. 2 She protests the Iraq War. 3 Being against the war is not anti-American. There is no irony in wearing a peace logo on an American flag. There is no irony in John Lennon's name on the shirt. She is against the Iraq War, like many, if not most of us. 4 The Right-Wing attempts to equate anti-war protesters as anti-American is BS.

Okay.. reading lesson for those to challenged to have actually READ the original post CLOSELY....
"...reinforcing the US as a "peacemonger" image."
If THAT doesn't position the entirety of the original post as one of irony, then obviously there are a few who do not speak the same language that I do - English.

The taliban are non slaveholding Gorean RPers. The evidence. 1) A warrior culture 2) Women have to cover themselves up, and if they dont, theyre punished severely. 3)They dont like westerners as they "destroy the immersion" .... all those women w short skirts etc 4)They follow the rules laid down bt their own "preist kings" 5)They ride about on giant birds

From: Chance Abattoir I still don't understand why he thinks ageplay caused the Taliban. Irony adj. The condition of being made of an iron-like substance. Ex. The soldiers protected their vehicle by welding irony plates to the sides. Which I think explains the whole goat/beard thing, don't you think?

If THAT doesn't position the entirety of the original post as one of irony, then obviously there are a few who do not speak the same language that I do - English. Actually what you originally said was "Um, the Adminsitration says it's actions ARE serving the purpose of effectuating global peace. .... and the two finger peace symbol - DOH... further reinforcing the US as a "peacemonger" image." The problem is that many of us don't believe the Administration. So we see Cindy Sheehan with peace symbols and don't connect them with the lies the Administration tells about the war. For us there is no irony. We just see another sad attack on a woman who's taken a stand against the war. Saying that her peace message is ironic because the war is about peace is Orwellian double-talk.

From: vivi Odets Perhaps the problem lies in your writing skills, or lack thereof. As I have made a considerable amount of money, before and since Katrina, with those same skills... I'd have to say that the likelihood is relatively small that my writing skills are the problem with your lack of comprehending my ironic interpretation of the picture in my initial post.

I think the shirt says that supporting peace is also patriotic, and perhaps getting entangled in foreign wars and stupid administrations is unpatriotic.
War != patriotism.

Oh, well, gee, my bad. How interesting to invoke "Katrina" as some sort of proof of your writing skills, or lack thereof. Guess you keep your editors really busy.

From: vivi Odets Oh, well, gee, my bad. How interesting to invoke "Katrina" as some sort of proof of your writing skills, or lack thereof. Guess you keep your editors really busy. I didn't "invoke" Katrina. I mentioned it as I have mentioned elsewhere that I drove a truck at one point and did some graduate work in mass communications. It places my skills in context - for some people. For you to post (above) as if I don't HAVE an editorial position which DOES require writing skills is pretty presumptuous on your part, don't you think? Not saying I do, just pointing out that you are making some pretty big leaps and taking something personal when my initial post was actually intended as humor. As others than myself have posted, the "obvious" intended message in the picture was easy to see. The alternate interpretation was an intellectual puzzle that I found humorous in a post-modern sense and thought others might also. Irony can be humorous without requiring defensiveness on anyone's part.
