As far as I can tell it is football, sex, baseball and computers in that order. Please correct me if I am wrong. :)

I don't know if I'm an intellectual, but people generally call me unusual when they are being kind and weird otherwise. Roughly prioritized: what will make me completely and utterly fulfilled, the futility of that first pursuit, my child and spouse, photography, music, complex systems, language, education, social interactions, psychology, motivations, how to procrastinate optimally, sex, and sex. I don't think about: sports, cars, beer, or power tools.

I have been accused of being female, but my child's conception, karyotype, total lack of fashion sense, and failure to think of food as much more than nescessary maintainence seem to indicate otherwise.

All that my significant other thinks of is sex, food and sleep; yes... he openly admits this.

what do women want?

Ever since Siggy Freud formally asked the question, many have been trying to answer it. Erica Jong's somewhat facetious answer in 1998 was "Bread, Roses, Sex, Power". I think the question probably predates written history though.

Amongst my ethological nerd associates (who are roughly 1:1 male:female) the answer appears to be "something slightly other than what they are getting now for all cases of 'what' and 'now'". There are some pretty decent arguments that this is in fact a perpetual, likely unintended, intelligence test of their mates which men on the whole mostly miss as the "target" is designed to move slightly out of the way of the arrow.

As I said, these are ethologists who tend to compare behaviour of species to others when there is reason to belive it is applicable. As animals are typically way easier to experiment on than humans, we've drawn a lot of regularities from there. (note well, no animal is any other but to the extent that similar selective pressures often generate similar results, this is not as stupid as it first seems, e.g. pig circulatory systems are similar enough in some aspects for research physicians to use them for some purposes).

Malte Andersson conducted a fascinating and rigorous experiment which showed that female widowbirds prefer a mate with a tail longer than exists on all males and longer than likely can exist. Talk about being hard to satisfy! More recent, more sophisticated research on humans seems to bear this out (cf. Cosmides and Tooby, Baker and Bellis)

Sorry for injecting this bit of seriousness into a whimsical thread. :o Please continue.

Okay, I'll finish with a bit of whimsy, my (male) academic mentor claims the reason he chose his field because it allows him to think and talk about sex all the time and get paid for it. Life is good. ;)

I must protest at the perpetuation of the idea that women think mostly about shopping. I don't. I am a woman. So it's a rubbish idea, ner ner.

Anyone who spends a great deal of time thinking about organised professional sports could hardly be called an intellectual, male or female.

Sport is just to keep the fools occupied so they don't revolt (and to train them for later use in wars etc.)

You apparently don't realize the hard work that it takes to follow sports. You must memorize all stats (for bragging and knowledge power). Organization comes with scheduling in all your favorite sports that come on at the same time and different channels. Then it takes an incredible amount of energy to be able to hoot, hollar and yell at the T.V., ect. ect.

Oh, I don't know, it can be fun to go to a fight and watch a hockey game break out.

Thanks for all of the great answers. Now I know that men put sex and eating above sports.

I was just thinking about something I read about cats falling out of windows and how they always land on their feet etc.. And the fact that they're more likely to die if they fall out of the 7th floor, than if they fall out of floors above or below, because its just about when they start to stifen up, so they don't absorb the shock so well as if they fell above or below the 7th floor..
