I think it's funny when people complain the forums are bad now.
Bad was when the majority of threads would absolutely become flamefests in 3 pages or less. Things are a whole lot better than they were.

I can understand that but bad is bad, regardless of whether it's "better". This forum isn't really that bad, but I do get the feeling that one needs to step lightly a lot of the time. We would be hard pressed to have any meaningful dialogue if we were to apply them all consistently. And what is one without the rest, if we are going to play that way? Generally, I find their use in informal venues such as forums somewhat ironic, because many times, people invoke logical fallacies due to the same reasoning they accuse their opponent of employing - to shut them down. _____________________ Swell Second Life: Menswear by Beryl Greenacre Miramare 105, 82/ Aqua 192, 112/ Image Reflections Design, Freedom 121, 121 |
| Alexin Bismark Annoying Bastard Join date: 7 May 2004 Posts: 208 | 10-02-2005 07:42 I am referring to the reactions I personally received, when I used to invoke logical fallacies with my RL friends, family, and coworkers. Which has a lot to do with why I generally don't use them (as well as the reasons outlined above), especially online. Personally my reaction is to just roll my eyes, point and chuckles with friends and coworkers reading over my shoulder at the user. Generally, I find their use in informal venues such as forums somewhat ironic, because many times, people invoke logical fallacies due to the same reasoning they accuse their opponent of employing - to shut them down. Finally, remember, not all of us took those courses, so expecting everyone to follow the logic taught some of us is fairly unreasonable, and many times perceived as snobbish. Actually this reminded me of one of the second best commentaries on the use (or overuser or incorrect use) of logical fallacies in an argument found on Steven's Guide to the Logical Fallacies which host the Logical Fallacies discussion list. (The first best commentary I have to give to my Prof that taught Intro to Modal Logic andCritical Reasoning back in my days as a young know-it-all college student. hehehe. I'm still smarting from that one.) I'll quote from Steven's Guide below, as I think it provide some useful tips on avoiding some of what you, Iridian, were talking about: Using Your Knowledge In your day-to-day life you will encounter many examples of fallacious reasoning. And it's fun - and sometimes even useful - to point to an argument and say, "A ha! That argument commits the fallacy of false dilemma." It may be fun, but it is not very useful. Nor is it very enlightened. The names of the fallacies are for identification purposes only. They are not supposed to be flung around like argumentative broadswords. It is not sufficient to state that an opponent has committed such-and-such a fallacy. And it is not very polite. This Guide is intended to help you in your own thinking, not to help you demolish someone else's argument. When you are establishing your own ideas and beliefs, evaluate them in the light of the fallacies described here. When evaluating the ideas and arguments proposed to you by others, keep in mind that you need to prove that the others' reasoning is fallacious. That is why there is a 'proof' section in the description of each fallacy. The 'proof' section is intended to give you a mechanism for showing that the reasoning is flawed. Apply the methodology described in the 'proof' section to the passage in question. Construct your own argument. Use this argument - not the name of the fallacy - to respond. So use reason with caution, and if you really want to persuade someone of something, remember that compassion, honesty and tact are as important as logic. Alexin |

I will be sure to use that when my brother invokes ad hominem on me for calling him on his BS. "What? Saying it's an ad hominem isn't an argument, why don't you try to actually discredit what I say instead of using labels for tools to further your own thinking processes.". I'd feel better if there was a poll.... It took this thread to see myself truly for what I am... I have been the absolute terror of these forums, haven't I? And am in utter remorse for the damage I have caused. *sniff* I realise now, that I sounded like a know-it-all in the scripting tips area. And once, I posted a comment in General. I thought I was completely ignored like a newbie, but no... I had merely quashed all replies. Ah, the damage I must have caused to those poor people. Every day is a gift, and I took that away from so many. *gets another tissue* You see, I had no idea all of you lived in such fear of my casual retort... I don't feel it when you constantly check my profile, or shrink away from my presence. I honestly thought I was just another resident, a nobody. But I have finally seen the light. Is it possible... I didn't think it existed, but... could *I* really embody this 'feted inner core'? Denial is a powerful thing - my blind spot was enormous... I *really* had no idea. I didn't think much of it at the time when a Linden said hello to me once. But I have finally seen myself through your eyes, and the sight isn't pretty. Thank you... thank you for returning me to the rest of humanity. I shall dedicate myself to being the most obscure newbie I can, and perhaps in time... everyone will forgive my past transgressions. My terrible fame will fade, and I'll be a simple resident once more. Please, oh please everyone, give me one last chance! *sniffles* I think... I think I need a hug now. - A thoroughly demoralised but wiser Desmond |
