lol...I still don't see ANY similarity with anything Egyptian there! Except that there are three characters in the picture!

The eyes are bigger than in real life (normal for cartoons), but the spacing between them is perfect! So, take that... :p

The artist is severely limited when it comes to perspective. He/She seems to only be able to draw them with their faces to the side (like the Egyptians)

or at a 3/4 view.

Below is their attempt at a straight on-pose:

The dad's face is still kind of a 3/4 view (frankenstein chin in full effect), but the artist is trying to draw the other two as looking right at the camera. Notice that the woman and the boy's facial shape is lopsided, as if the artist can't figure out how a skull would look if it isn't in the 3/4 view. "Well, I'll just leave the skull like I know how to draw it, but draw the eyes and mouth on top, looking straight ahead."

The novice grasp on perspective, eerie eyes, fugly color scheme, and monster chin make me physically uncomfortable and slightly nauseous. And we paid for it. Go team.

I miss Ranger Rick and Scarlet.

:(

Betsy Baytos
02-04-2006 13:52
The artist is Betsy Baytos, who has worked for Disney and for Jim Henson's Muppet Show. Here's a couple pages on her:

http://www.therescuetrain.com/Default.aspx?tabid=843

http://www.contracostatimes.com/mld/cctimes/news/nation/13778158.htm

Yeah, this "readiness" campaign is about as honest and useful as the old "duck and cover" crock o shite. History repeats itself.

I'm sorry, Betsy. I imagine that you're a good person who honestly loves kids and fluffy animals. But, you're serving corrupt masters who don't give a damn about love, honesty or respect. They value power and control above all. They will sacrifice you, your kids and your fluffy friends to maintain that power.

Bottled water and magic parrots won't save you.

Oh come on. It's not THAT bad. It's a very expressive, friendly style, which is generally a good thing for children's artwork. I agree the artist is perhaps not the best ever at the style, but its not as bad as you make it out to be.

Besides, I think parents might complain if it turns out the government had payed someone like Ayame or Frank Gembeck to do the artwork ;) (Those with a weak stomach for furry art, don't google them by any means. A GIS would probably not be safe for work. Or home.)

Maybe it's not that bad. But it makes me feel ill (in the way that Cayce from Pattern Recognition feels when she sees Kogepan or Tare Panda). x_x It's also not very hip and looks like an ad for the Cub Scouts circa 1984.

However, it would be really funny if homeland security started adorning their official gear with logos of cuddly animals in order to pacify the _insert appropriate demonizing signifier of otherness_.

Exactly... make the budget big, keep it small, they can't win either way in someone's view.

I see the drawing perspective problem now though. I hadn't looked at enough of the pictures.

But the final :p still falls on Chance: I don't think kids looking at this either notice or give a shit about the artist's lack of top quality skill! :D

Nice nazi reference above btw. Too bad it's not even remotely political and it's intention is to potentially save lives in the event of large scale emergencies. @#$% those homeland security bastards, giving out survival advice and shit! Who do they think they are, the government?

Of course it's political. Homeland Security is there to engender an atmosphere of paranoia and fear ..... and theyre wanting to get them young now.

Yeah, really damn terrifying.

Are you aware that the mission of the DHS is broader than simply anti-terror response and prevention, including natural disasters or types of large scale emergencies? Or that terrorism is barely mentioned on that website, and where it is listed among all the other natural disasters, it's last? The website's focus is on preparedness in general.

Do yourself a favor and stop visiting whatever propaganda websites you're reading.

As Blueman Steele said in another thread, looks like the NSA is getting on the bandwagon as well as the Dept of Homeland Security.

Keep watching the CIA site. You have been briefed.

And remember, always be ready to Duck! And cover. o/~

But I'm sure they paid well and the check cleared immediatly. You have to keep these things in perspective.
