Do you have a copy of "Use of Weapons" I can borrow? I've been looking at stores for years and ordering books on the internet seems weird.

Yes. I have it with me actually. email me and I'll pass it over.
It was the first Banks book I bought actually.
and thanks for the marain ref. I think when I have some free time I may work on an SL xlator for it :>

The only reason I even know of Banks is that a mentor of mine recommended that I read Use of Weapons after I read Simmons' Hyperion. Read the latter, but damned if I couldn't find the former to thumb through it.

Dunno about Hyperion. I was never able to get into that.
But with the banks Culture series, I was hooked. After I got Use of Weapons, I tore through all the rest. Lucky for me I was in the UK at the time, so I could easily buy all of his books.
If you haven't read any of his stuff, maybe start with Consider Phlebas - the first in the series. Not essential to read them sequentially, but I know i always like to when possible.

star trek simply puts this down to universal translaters for speach

The text - while there are other types used - uses basic americanisation scripture as the federration is based in san fransisco and therefor uses that localisation as the universal - althou seeing the world try to learn german and its male/female/higher/lower etc words or even the japanese or chinese texts - american is simpler and easier to learn (various studies on languages show that to be true of written form - whereas spoken form still has problems)

the extra types of lettering not truely used to much might have been dropped as the language evolved to be more simplyfied for world knowleadge - look how much the english language alone has changed in 200 years - let alone 2000

If i was to be a captian or crew member of a ship in the modern day world - wouldnt they make sure i could speak or a least read the language most commonly used aboard?
------------------------
to hazzard a guess at stargate type scifi.....

for the series that uses a modern day setting with other worldly creatures - this may be down to simplified translation - what we have written down in 'us english' type may mean in guaold 'all your base are belong to us'

maybe one day i will finally learn my first language properly and use proper grammer - spelling and pun.tu-a'tion

Silly, that's because punctuation is exotic and sexy.

Is'nt i't o'bviou's?

Is that why some babies were named

Aa'Niyah, Ce'Qwoia, Jo'El, Rach'El, A'Driannah, Cha'Nce, Ka'Ren, Se'Heira, An'Gelez, Cour'Tez, Ky'Lee, Tai'Lor, A'Ngelina, De'Liberately, Ma'Kayla, Ty'Rece, Bles'Id, God'Iss, Myr'Acle, X'Zavier, Cam'Ren, Jer'Miah, O'Livia, Zy'Eire

Why do people do this to their kids? Doom them to a lifetime of people not being able to pronounce or spell their names? Your kid isn't going to grow up to be the next American Idol because you picked the spelling of their name when you were smoking crack people. (or whatever drug/drink of choice you were having)

(and it's not cute either.)

But you nevvver see any Russian letters. You never see any umlauts. You never see any æ or Hebrew or wingdings or even a phonetic symbol like the shwa.

No one ever uses either. :(

Star Trek gave us every combination of normal letters, vulcan, romulan, klingon, blingon, blingoff, etc... so these days the REALLY COOL SCI-FI THING TO DO is use apostrophes. Yeah, I'll see your M'Toth and raise you a G'Kar and a Goa'uld. Like w'tf. It's like they just discovered the friggen things!!!

Well, Hebrew figures largely in this one SF story I've read titled "Seventy-two Letters", but that's because it deals with the kabbalistic holy names that empower golems being turned into a science.

Interesting point Ali'asi. Like Ch'ance, I'm fascinating with unusual scifi spellings. :)

I think the dark elves used apostrophes way before any aliens did <nod>
