Star Trek gave us every combination of normal letters, vulcan, romulan, klingon, blingon, blingoff, etc... so these days the REALLY COOL SCI-FI THING TO DO is use apostrophes. Yeah, I'll see your M'Toth and raise you a G'Kar and a Goa'uld. Like w'tf. It's like they just discovered the friggen things!!!
But you nevvver see any Russian letters.
You never see any umlauts.
You never see any æ or Hebrew or wingdings or even a phonetic symbol like the shwa.

And that's why SciFi today is racist. In the cool sci-fi future, everything translates to 26 English letters and apostrophes.

Mark my words- Soon... very soon... You will start seeing double apostrophes.

This is EXACTLY why you don't write a sci fi show... because you aren't a racist.

Try watching russian, german or hebrew sci fi shows :>
I'm guessing we are talking tv/film. if it's racist, it ain't because of the lack of foreign languages (which has nothing to do with race, but that's another story).
I'm guessing you didn't watch Firefly? I don't think they relied on apostrophes. Of course, like all good things, it died. And then there was farscape...
Oh, and the apostrphe's are there for english speakers to know how to pronounce it. I doubt G'Kar signed his name like that - it's just for the dumb humans the apostrophe. :p

I wonder what were the first alien races to have apostrophes in their names?

actually, according to the logic of the old-school sci-fi writters we'd probably all be speaking a universal language like espenanto, one that is more logical and universal than the one's we currently speak and write...and besides, language has nothing to do with race...

No one will ever fear or respect an alien with an umlaut in its name. However, people back off when the evil #&@!% appears. :D

It does when you're sitting at the business end of a plasma cannon owned by a hostile racist alien! Whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do?! You're gonna stop thinking apostrophes are so dang flippin' cool, that's what, apostrophe apologist!

Now THAT's what I'm talking about. I can just hear the rustic English in this alien chap's speech. It just screams "I can't cook, but damn am I well read."

Is this an avant-garde reference to the presence of hydrolyzed collagen in skin care lotion? I've never thought of it that way before, but I guess if someone is going to masturbate then they'd be "horny for ligaments." I'm going to use that phrase the next time a telemarketer calls.

Gosh, you should have heard the one time a telemarketer called and I was eating a watermelon. By the end, I'm convinced I almost had them sold.

I just realized I didn't mean ligaments, I meant ligatures.

HORNY FOR LIGATURES!!!

Sowwie. :)

I'm still using "horny for ligaments" as a masturbatory euphemism.

But yes, ligatures would be cool in sci fi names. I mean, hell, it's not like you're REALLY translating the names into English because the names don't actually mean anything. Why not use cool letters?

What are some of your fave sci-fi languages and/or fonts?

I like Dominion script, even tho it isn't actually a language like Klingon.

Do you have a copy of "Use of Weapons" I can borrow? I've been looking at stores for years and ordering books on the internet seems weird.
