Me too!! :(
I can't believe I missed that game when it came out. I've never played it and people tell me it's really cool.

Yeah, and it actually has a somewhat interesting story (there is a story goal if you win by, ahem, evolution).

I think what I like most about that game are the cut scenes they stole from Baraka.

True dat. I first played SMAC on other people's machines, then I picked up my own copy at 1/2 Price Books this year. I found the Alien Crossfire expansion, too; unfortunately, when I got it home I realized it was for a Mac :(.

I'm going to try to find Civ4 today.

I guess none of you have played the Civilization board game?

I tried it once in college. At the 17 hour (straight) mark, it was fairly clear that this one guy was going to win, so, as the 3rd most powerful country, I forfeited and gave all my holdings to a weaker opponent. This drastically changed the balance of power and the game went on for many more hours (I won in my mind because I got to go to sleep).

I played a game called "Advanced Civilization", which is supposed to be modeled after the board game I think? It was ok but too much of a direct translation... board games suck on the computer.

I like Sacrifice. It is really cool. I was on the last level and then my system crashed. I never reinstalled it on my new system, but now I think I might dig it out. It's not so hard to control once you get used to the camera controls and the formation keys.

Sacrifice is something I have always wanted to recreate in SL. It wouldn't be very hard to do!

You can still get Master of Magic from home of the underdogs or classic gaming.
http://www.google.com/search?q=master+of+magic

It seems to run fine on windows 2000 without music.

It still holds it's own against modern strategy games.

A guy at EB told me that the product code for the Alpha Centauri plus Alien Crossfire is called "SMACPAC." Smack pack indeed.

Cristiano, thank you so much for bringing this to my attention. Well, more accurately, my new housekeeper, nanny, bookkeeper, attending nurse (with catheterization training), and personal shopper thank you; I on the other hand, curse you and put my incipient death due to starvation on your head.

Thanks for posting, really, thanks, gotta run, it's my turn now....

;_; I got Civ4 today, and my CD drive suddenly only reads DVDs. I got through the Disc 1 install, then the installer hung when I tried to insert the second disc. Now I can't read any CD-ROMs or music discs. :(

Wtf. LoL. It's a sign. Your citizens have revolted and taken over your hardware.

There is some should-be-shot-in-the-head Macrovision DRM crap on those disks. You need to disable autorun on your DVD/CD drive, uninstall Civ4 and then re-install. Otherwise, inserting the disk causes some driver altering daemons to run which borks your system hard.

I also noticed a particularly nasty conflict with McAffee B&D Secuity Suite on a friend's machine that was fixed by zapping McAffee which he didn't need anyway given his hardware firewall and system use. Yes, I know there is something gravely wrong with a world where a program to protect you from stuff that shouldn't happen fights for control of your machine with a game that assumes you are a pirate. I blame Microsoft.

I've never really liked those types of games. I guess I don't have the patience to play it.

I borrowed Civ IV from someone at work for the weekend and its a much faster paced game since the last time I tried this type of game. It even got me to buy my own copy of the game today. Between Civ IV, The Movies and City of Villains I'll never finish F.E.A.R this year. :p

k, I've got a new DVD/CD R/W drive, and I've installed and played Civ4. The new globe view is awesome, as is the more intelligible diplomacy, but my system (which I would expect to be more than adequate) skips and/or crashes on various cinematics, and I cant seem to figure out how to find an online game. I want to playa multiplayer now, but the only option seems to be GameSpy, which keeps directing me to marketing sites rather than anyplace I can join a game.

Something that bugged me about Rise of Nations: seems like all the world cultures start off quite unique, with different-looking units and all that, but by the Information Age (if you've playing chronologically through time), they end up looking the same. I never thot Aztec armies would look so dull if they had ended up prospering for many centuries to come.

Maybe it's reflective of real life though... which is kinda sad.

My system likes to hang fairly often during cinematics in Civ4, particularly when I'm contacted by foreign leader. Sometimes it stalls for a full minute before the diplomacy screen finally comes up. Hope they do another patch. Still an awesome game though. I haven't tried multiplayer at all.

I was certainly addicted to the original Civilization but have not been too crazy about the follow-ups.

Although I am very much into Roman History, there was something about "Rome, Total War" that did not do it for me.

I play Age of Empires III. With the exception of "Age of Mythology", the entire series has been great!

I am horribly disappointed in Age of Empires III - I received it for Christmas, and in a word, I hate it. I loved all the previous games in the series - including Age of Mythology, but this one just seems like a step backward. I was shocked at how much I dislike it. Maybe i will give it another chance again soon, but right now it is sitting unused. Now Black and White 2 on the other hand, that game surprised me - I did not expect to like it so much after the disaster the first version was, but I love it.

I like AOE3, but I got bored of it pretty fast. If I hadn't played the first two so much I'd probably like it more. I thought the home city was a cool addition, but I was disappointed that the AI seems untouched from previous versions. When playing skirmish I either crush the AI or it crushes me depending on what difficulty I play on. There's no setting where I get a nice long drawn out game with an equal chance to win or lose.

Civilization IV is like crystal meth. Do not play it if you want to be able to continue to work, eat, sleep, etc. You have been warned.

I got CivIV for my husband for Christmas! If only I'd logged into the SL forums before Christmas instead of after! :p
