Civilization IV is like crystal meth. Do not play it if you want to be able to continue to work, eat, sleep, etc. You have been warned.

Lies. My Indian society (currently the founder of all seven major religions) needs my trusty leadership.

We also have nukes in 1850 CE.

You have been warned, barbarian.

I am sure there are cheat codes, but what fun is that? bah. Now the Sims 2 on the other hand, that 50k cheat is very useful when you are developing a pleasure seeking bisexual sim who just wants to woohoo with everybody and dance.

I woulda had Nukes around that same time, except my people were all hippy tree hugger environmentalists with free speech, so I didn't want to make them mad at me...

Plus I didn't want anyone else to have them... at least not til I could get SDI defense for all my cities :)

Does anyone else miss the Space and Underwater cities from Call to Power? I really liked those...

Now all we got are Future Tech # and the game ends at 2050 :(

oooh, it sounds like Civ IV is a good game. I have to say that I loved the original Civ and Civ II, but I thought that Alpah Centari, Civ III and Civ call to power were too slow and cumbersome and I think I lost intrest in all of them after playing 1 or 2 games.

I've been dying for a good turn-based strategry game. It seems these days that everything is pretty much realtime and I'm just too much of an uncoordinated spaz to play them well.

Maybe this will cause a resurgence of turn-based strategy games. I miss:

Civ and Civ II
Master of Orioin (and MOO II)
Master of Magic (yeah, this game was buggy as all heck when it came out, but I loved being able to design my own magical artifacts)
XCOM (aka UFO defence) just the first one, I felt the sequals sucked
Panzer General (yeah yeah, its rock paper scissors of military sims, but it was simple enough for a non-"fanatical military history buff" like me to grasp and enjoy) I didn't enjoy the sequals to this game, though (allied general, pacific general, fantasy general and PG II) although fantasy general had a great musical score

Hurrah for turn based games :)

Haven't played multiplayer yet, mostly because I don't have 5 hours to kill at a time.

As for getting nukes in 1850, you have to be extremely peaceful with your neighbors, economically prosperous, and you have to play with the "epic" time scale (more turns).

I always go for the economic crushing victory.... My total points are something like 3 times the next closest country. Fear peacetime. :)

I had Civ 2 for the PS1.. I got Civ 3 for the PC, and found it close impossible.. Is Civ 4 a lot better than Civ 3?

H'od up.

Once you have your nukes, though, do you say "Nuts to peace!" and start beating the hell out of your neighboring states?

Hell, with that kind of development I'd just scoot around some heavy forces and intimidate everyone into exchanging cities for a peace treaty.

I'm glad you like it, but it's a little Lion King for my tastes.

Well, the large sadness of the Civ series is that they aren't as destructive as a real nuke would be.

You cannot wipe cities off the map, nor kill all of the population, or all of the buildings. You merely pollute all the tiles around the city, making them unproductive, nuke about 3/4 of the army, and reduce the population by about 80%.

Eventually they can turn the world into a desert wasteland, which I haven't tried in civ4 yet, but in civ3 took forever to do.

The sad part, and I can't believe I am going to admit this in print, is that I played against Eboni this weekend. She had never played before. After playing it for the better part of two evenings (since you can save a multiplayer game and resume, which is very cool), she beat me not only in score, but got to space with 15 turns left to go. However, the second time around, I haven't let my guard down as much so we are neck and neck :) Ugh, I need to stop playing these games.

PS - have you ever played Empire Earth II? I bought that a few weeks back also. I loved Empire Earth.

Have you tried Rome Total War? It has all the big-picture civilization management sort of things that Civ does but you also get to refine your military tactical skills commanding troops in real-time battles (with that all-important pause option for those who prefer to think about things). Plus, once you develope onagers watching those city walls crumble as you toss big flaming rocks at them is a real trip.

RTS combat with pause is a poor work around from what I've exerienced. I never finished playing Baulder's Gate II or Neverwinter Nights because the combat system was too annoying. I've tried playing other RTS games (Warcraft, C&C, Lords of the Realm, Rise of Nations etc and really didn't get much enjoyment from them.

I suppose I'm just too fussy

Didn't like Baulders Gate or NWN?! What?! I've given months of my life to those games! I nearly lost a job for one. Don't belittle my dedication! :P

btw, on Civ IV. Am I the only one who is noticing a real sluggishness that kicks in after about 1500 AD? I hear Spock's voice way before the tech panel comes up. It's really annoying.

(Could it have something to do with my predilection for *huge* maps?)

Rome Total War and the recent expansion " Barbarian Invasion" is awesome!
