Ok I got new tattoos for my birthday, two of them in fact. One on each upper arm. I went to the doctor for a routine check up yesterday afternoon, and I asked the nurse to please be careful taking my blood pressure, because it would hurt if she just slapped it on over my new ink. She proceded to give me a lecture the whole time about how bad and unfeminine tattoos are, and how I'd never get a husband, and stuff that is really not her business. It's my skin, and I happen to love all 4 of my tattoos, and still a small amount of people feel the need to lecture me on them, people I don't even know well, or even at all. I'd rather get art where I can see it every day, than spend the same amount on something to hang on a wall that can be easily distroyed.

Heh - at the end of the day, that doctor's office is a buisness to make money. (Unless you went to a free clinic).

Granted it would have been a hella inconvienience to you - but I would have taken a small amount in satisfaction in saying to that nurse....

"Excuse me, Miss, but as you'll note on my chart, I am a twenty-five year old adult, with a child no less. If my tattoos upset you, I'll be more than happy to take my buisness elsewhere."

That, or complain to the Doctor when he finally attended to you that his nurse was exceptionally unprofessional, and that you were deeply offended by her comments.

At the very least they might think twice before offering unsolicited moral advice :D

Considers posting about the irony of your ranting about her rant - but decides to mind my own business.

You are lucky in Japan tattoos make you socially unacceptable. You are not allowed to use public baths and hot springs. The reason is that our criminal gangs love tattoos among other things. The operators do not want trouble so they are banned. Is this right, maybe not but it is how we do things.

About yourself? When you set yourself apart from the mainstream expect comments. They have the same "freedoms" that you enjoy. You can not have everything your own way!

I live in California, I know a few grandmothers who have recently gotten tattoos, it's pretty mainstream here, most people under 30 have at least 1. The reaction I usually get is "Wow that's cool, did it hurt?" and that is reason number 457 why I don't want to go to Japan.

Because the Japanese won't ask you if it hurt because they use the old needle style instead of a gun?

I have HUGE Tats on my upper arms and you should see some of the looks I get in public.... I guess having a Tattoo and being female automatically makes you an undesirable person LMAO

I once had a mom come up and ask me to tell her little boy who was like 7, how much they hurt and how he should NEVER ever get a tat.... Actually, I find getting a Tat to be not so painful and more pleasurable and Well if he turns 18 he can do whatever the flip he pleases....

My response is to pretty much Smile and Nod or say something like Boo LMAO whenever I get the Look....

Congrats on the new ink :D Enjoy

I don't like pain, tattoos don't hurt, if they hurt there is no way I would have got more after the first one. I sat the whole time without even flinching when I got the two new ones. I laughed at one point cause he hit a ticklish spot. The guy next to me whined like a baby, so I guess it's pretty much a person to person thing, but tattoos don't hurt to me.

Mae, I actually was a receptionist for a summer in a studio (Tat studio) and the guys were MUCH bigger babies than the ladies :D We had one BIG burly Harley ridin guy pass out and slide right out of the seat AND the gun hadn't even touche him yet LMAO

And as for liking pain, its not so much liking pain or telling people you like pain, its the endorphine rush that goes along with it...

And yeah the tickle spots during a tat are hilarious LOL I just sat and told jokes
Will have to upload some pics to put on here :D

Responding that way would be attach importance to remarks made by someone with whom you know you disagree. Educating the intolerant isn't a work assignment you are required to accept.

She proceded to give me a lecture the whole time about how bad and unfeminine tattoos are, and how I'd never get a husband

Before I say anything else, let me state for the record that I'm a sucker for lower back tattoos on women. I find those extremely sexy. They get me every time.

Okay, back to your story, Maeve. I gotta ask, exactly how "feminine" looking was this nurse, anyway? It sounds like she could use an education about what femininity means in the modern world. You might want to print out the following, and show it to her.

Dear Nurse Knowitall,

After some quick googling, I found some information you might find interesting. Let's see, first, out of Playboy's 25 Sexiest Celebrity 2005 list, 14 have tattoos:

Jessica Alba
Jamie Pressly
Halle Barre
Eva Longoria
Angelina Jolie
Pam Anderson
Beyonce
Denise Richards
Jenna Jameson
Paris Hilton
Shakira
Brooke Burke
Carmen Electra
Vida Guerra

Nothing feminine about those girls, right? Nobody would every want to marry them, right?

What's that, Nurse Ratchet? You don't approve of Playboy? Oh, well why didn't you say so? How about we just go straight to the source then, and ask men directly. I mean, you did imply the point of being feminine was to attract a husband, right? So, where can we go to ask a lot of men a question? To ask men? Hmm. Hey, this might sound crazy, but how about askmen.com?

Ready for this? Out of all the women voted into Askmen's Top 99 for 2006, six out of the top 10 have tattoos:

Jessica Alba
Angelina Jolie
Adriana Lima
Charlize Theron
Jessica Biel
Eva Longoria

Nobody feminine on that list, right?

Well, let's keep going. Out of the entire 99, better than one out of four has one if not several tattoos. Here are the ones who didn't make the top 10, but are still in the 99:

Linsay Lohan
Halle Berry
Salma Hayek
Gisele Bundchen
Penelope Cruz
Carmen Electra
Rebecca Romijn
Beyonce
Denise Richards
Bridget Moynahan
Mandy Moore
Rachel Stevens
Jaime Pressly
Alyssa Milano
Jennifer Esposito
Christina Milian
Alysson Hanigan
Vanessa Marcil
Anna Kournikova

Nobody would want to marry any of those girls either, right? Gotcha. No one feminine there.

Okay, what's that now? Maybe men just aren't good judges of feminity. Well you said it was about attracting a husband, didn't you? Oh, that's not really what you meant. Well, I'll tell you what then. Lets ask the women what they think. Accordig to a survey conducted by Diva magazine, guess what woman most other women would choose to sleep with if they could? That would be none other than Angelina Jolie, who just happens to have more tattoos than you can count. Actually, out of the entire top 10 list, 9 of the lovely ladies have tattoos:

Angelina Jolie
Portia de Rossi
Gina Gershon
Jodie Foster
Queen Latifah
Halle Berry
Charlize Theron
Salma Hayek
Drew Berrymore

Yeah, I see your point there Nursie. Nobody on that list is particularly feminine either. Now, exactly what planet are you from again?

Tats rock! You rock! I have several of my own and I love each and every one of them.

Ooooh! Maeve, wanna come down to SD and get an SL tat with me? Anyone else? That would be too classic; a mob of SLers lining up outside a parlor. *snickers*
