Looked a little like this: My first car looked something like that, except it was a four door. I don't remember what year it was (it was secondhand from my parents) but it was a burgundy Dodge Om (the "ni" fell off at some point). She was the last in a line of similar vehicles that, for reasons that escape me, we always referred to as "Betsy". I loved that car, even though I kept having to retrieve bits of it that fell off at stoplights or in the car wash (particularly bits of the bumper). The radio would randomly go off sometimes when you hit a bump and you'd have to thump the dash to get it going again. It was perfect for driving to high school and running around with a bunch of friends stuffed in the back. I sold her to someone for parts when I started having to drive on the highway on a regular basis (she was not capable of going over 80kmph (about 50mph), and that's with a strong tailwind on a steep downhill slope). Aww, I'm getting a warm and fuzzy feeling just thinking about Betsy. |

1986 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham, white.
Purchased in like-new condition, but due to us not having a garage, soon began succumbing to Michigan weather and salt on the roads. Managed to get it to 98,000 miles before I got sick of paying 50 bucks per tank of premium gas, in a car that got 10 miles to the gallon. I still miss that car. Nigh-on indestructable, extremely easy to drive, impossible to park (but then, cadillacs make their own spots). _____________________

mmmmm car talk......
First car: 1976 Chevy Caprice Classic with a small block 350, 4 barrel carb very low mileage as the orig owner let it sit all it's life. I think the total mileage on engine and tranny was around 30,000 miles, no kidding. And boy would she haul tail! Ahh, those were the days... I do miss that car as the engine was very easy to maintain -- still used fractional on every bolt back then and one socket set was all I needed to do most repairs and I could even sit in the engine compartment to do the work. Car was built like a tank too, I remeber taking out a speed limit sign (small accident) with no damage done to the car. Second: 1985 Ford Ranger basic model. This thing was so basic, the only thing it had going for it was a hydraulic clutch for the 4 speed overdrive tranny. I had to install my own cig lighter unit into it, that is how basic. Nothing was powered, manual steering, manual tranny, non-power assisted brakes. Was built like a tank too, easy to maintain as she only had 2 things to drive off of the main belt, water pump and alternator. Good truck till the Crankshaft broke in half..... Current: 1996 Chevy S-10. Got it as a lease return in 1998, good truck, 5 speed tranny, power steering, power brakes (I removed the ABS system as I hated it). The only thing is, it is really hard on the rear U-Joint, replaced 3 of em to date. Also the stock Ball joints are horrible, blew upper driver side ball joint at only 85,000 miles. Forced me to replace all the ball joints as well as the steering linkages, all parts except for the main arm. I have only owned 3 cars since I got my DL in 1993.... While one of my buddies has either wrecked or destroyed by neglect more cars than I can count on my hands and feet. By hanging out with him I learned the many ways that an engine could blow up, no joke. That show Mythbusters would have a field day with his skill at causing things to explode. I still remember to this day the time I was sitting at home watching TV while I was in HS and the power went out. Here he had smashed into a utility pole on my street on his way over to visit me and snapped that puppy in half yet he walked away from it.... _____________________
