I just use Coke. People Up North, where I am now, seem to understand fairly well. Pop = Beer much of the time here.

don't start the beer moniker sub-theme however down here just ask for a brew and its immediately Bud Light or Budweiser. you have to ask for Coors Light by name

What do all these labels have in common? That's right, the all say soda. ...because that's what it's called.

What's a cream pop? It's certainly not a carbonated, cream-flavored beverage. It's ice cream on a stick. Carbonated, cream-flavored beverage is cream soda. Says so right on the bottle.

What's an orange pop? It's certainly not a carbonated, orange flavored drink. It's push-up frozen sherbet that comes in paper tubes. Carbonated, orange-flavored beverage is orange soda. Says so right on the bottle.

What's a grape pop? It' what happens when a grape is stepped on. Carbonated, grape flavored beverage is grape soda. Says so right on the bottle.

What's a lemon-lime pop? It's certainly not Sprite or 7up. It doesn't even exist. Sprite and 7up are lemon-lime soda. Says so right on the bottle.

Don't believe me? Well, check out this bottle cap collecotors' trading site which has pictures of hundreds of different flavors of carbonated beverage. I challenge you to find a single one that says pop on it. There are none.

I like "soda" better. As a two syllable word, its length allows for concise yet understandable dictation. Im a fan of regular spelling as well (growing up in a bilingual spanish/english household) and p-o-p just rubs me the wrong way. It seems to lack vowels IMO; I dont like the fact that such a short word ends on a consonant.

I defy the midwestern steriotype

My mom was in for culture shock when she moved to Tennessee from Illinois. On their way, the stopped at a restaurant. She ordered a Coke. The waitress asked her "What kind of Coke?" Now that I live in Oregon, I call it soda :D

How funny, I live in Oregon too (on the coast as well), and I usually say pop, or soda-pop.

All this pop talk has got that darn Britney Spears "Soda Pop" song in my head.

Thanks for that :-P

:0 I've rarely heard be called pop (or soda) in the UK!

I've always gone by the name of the drink.

Okay then, it's pop in my kitchen.
