In Canada, we say "pop" and sometimes "sodapop", but soda is carbonated water. It's sometimes referred to as "soda water" or "club soda". Club Soda probably originated from it's use in bars and would be the equivalent to "seltzer"

I'm actually the only person that I know personally that says soda. It leaves me wondering what made me start saying it in the first place!

Never really thought too much about this before. I think I call it "soda" most of the time although I've probably called it "pop" as well. It's interesting that "coke" is so popular. Calling it that must cause confusion sometimes.

I call it a coke, or a pepsi, or whatever type of drink it is.

I grew up saying pop. Of course I am from the upper midwest, so it only stands to reason.
When I was in the miltary, many folks said coke and soda. I have been heard saying soda before, but I don't use "Coke" generically, it just seems odd. Although, I call any kind of tissue a Kleenex. Various brands of tissue are a lot more similar to each other than Coke is to Orange Crush though... _____________________

Interesting results. I wonder what term is more popular globally. I'd bet it's neither soda nor pop.

When I was in the military, a lot of folks from Europe and Korea were always wanting to find Fanta - in fact my ex was from Korea, and sort of used it generically. I know Coca-Cola marketed it's Fanta brands heavily overseas at one time. Not sure if it was ever used generically in Europe though.

I say "fizz" for generic clear fizzy drinks. "coke" for generic dark fizzy drinks. Am I weird?

Really, Blaze? 'Cause every Californian I know says "soda," occasionally interchangeable with "Coke," whereas all the Midwesterners and East Coasters I know say "pop." You say "pop" in SoCal, and you're likely to get yourself a long look and a "you from back East?"
![]() My boyfriend, a New York transplant, says "pop." He claims "soda" means seltzer. My grandfather from Boston also says "pop," and if you say "soda," he'll play deaf. |

:0 I've rarely heard be called pop (or soda) in the UK! I've always gone by the name of the drink. I have to agree, I've never heard it called either pop or soda in the UK. In Australia/NZ it's just called "soft drink" and juice is just called juice. _____________________
I'm sorry officer, while the term "Mad Scientist" may seem to be appropriate to some, the Professor prefers "Science Related Memetic Disorder".

On their way, the stopped at a restaurant. She ordered a Coke. The waitress asked her "What kind of Coke?" Now that I live in Oregon, I call it soda ![]() _____________________
