Ok, I'm watching cartoons with my kids this morning, and every 3rd commercial or so is for a Disney toy, or a "new" Disney movie that is a sequal to a movie that was pretty complete to begin with. I just saw a comercial for Bambi 2. I'm pretty sure Bambi was pretty much done 40 years ago. Direct to video sequals and waaaay too many Disney toys are pretty crappy. I used to love Disney movies as a kid, but it's like everything is so comercial now. I'm not against movie merchandise or anything, but when every 3rd comercial on a channel that isn't Disney, is just a wee bit nuts.

Being a mother of a 4 year old, I completely agree with you. In fact, I hate toy commercials period at this stage in my childs life because everytime one of those bastard commercials come on, I hear a schreik come from my child saying "I want that!!!" Makes me want to throw my T.V. out the door and hit it with a sledgehammer!

My six year old is firmly in his Star Wars phase thankfully, but I only have a year or so before the cycle begins again with the little one, I'm still not sure how I survived The Wiggles the first time.

The Wiggles should be used as psychological warfare, if you hear the Hot Potato song 17 times in one day you're going to lose your mind.

I read an article on why Disney does so many direct-to-video movies. They make between $100-$200 million profit on each one, which is a great profit for a blockbuster film in the theatres.

We don't do too much Disney anymore in our house. None of their crap is educational, just stupid lately. And I'm sad they bought Pixar.

Those Wiggles guys kinda creep me out...

But yeah Maeve I am with you and the Disney crap-0-la straight to videos. Not only are the stories crap, have nothing to do with the original but the quaility is so far below what we have come to expect from Disney animation.

Disney hasn't done anything right since Fantasia in 1940. Everything has been done cheaply, badly or with an eye towards homogeneity or profits.

Disney are Evil.
Walt's disembodied cryogenically frozen head is actually interfaced with a supercomputer grid under Disneyland, from where he plots world domination.

But seriously, Disney are overrated crap, who only came to dominate the animation industry in the States, by utilising the McCarthy era to blackball the competition.

Hmmm.
Tron was good, but also about 2 decades old now.

I think Disney has gotten...settled, which isn't a good thing for anything that deals with talent.

However, Disney buying Pixar may not be a bad thing. Perhaps they will absorb some of that pioneer spirit they have lost lately and start fresh. Probably by absorbing the minds that are trying new things and, hopefully, NOT assimilating them to "what works".

As for educational...how often has Disney been educational? Fantasia, sure. The television specials WITH Walt Disney, and a few things by a duck, but in the movies?

About the only thing Disney has done consistantly well, in my opinion, is make movies with broad appeal. Who here would really want to sit through a kiddie movie made by anyone else? At least Disney throws in references us adults can appreciate and enjoy.
I watched a GI Joe cartoon about a year ago, (I really used to enjoy that cartoon,) and found it flat and weak. The plots were more transparent than I'd realized. It was a cheaply made cartoon produced with the express purpose of selling toys. I couldn't even enjoy it on nostalgia factor, it was so weak. On the other hand, I can sit down with a disney movie, (when I bother to watch a movie at all,) and not feel like my intelligence isn't being slowly driven away by the cinema equivalent to chineese water torture.

But Bambi II? Ugh...I have issues with Bambi I, mainly on how the personification of the animals probably made more vegetarians than did "the jungle".
Bambi II.
Cinderella II
Toy Story II
102 dalmations,
101 dalmations, (live action.)
the latest Herbie...(all herbie movies but the first actually,)

I do see a disturbing trend from a company that once led an industry that is SUPPOSED to give us something new every so often.

P.S. Was that non-disney channel ABC? If so, it was Disney.

It's the same at the Magic Kingdoms. There used to be dozens, hundreds of rides but now the few rides that are left are ancient and shabby, and everywhere you look is a kiosk selling Disney branded junk or timeshares.

I haven't seen Fantasia 2000, but aside from that, there hasn't been a decent Disney cartoon (that I've seen) in a LOOOOOONG time. (I did like Beauty and the Beast). What passes for animation in most modern Disney is total crap. (And nauseating, dull pap.)

But Pixar - I'm pretty sure that used to be in conjunction with Disney, and was what I considered the best part of Disney.

Actually, I consider Pixar to be the Best Part of Life Itself, and certainly a good influence in raising the standards for every other film, computer-generated or not.

So I'm glad Disney has got Pixar (back), since I also read - on this forum, I think - that had they not, then Disney would have had rights to some of the other Pixar films, like Toy Story 3 or something, and I'd hate to see Disney alone ahold of all that stuff.

Having said all that, even bad Disney is still Disney, and Disneyworld is still Disneyworld, and there really hasn't ever been anything else like it, or anything which has become wrapped in our collective personnas to as great a degree in this culture.

more like toy story 17 or lion king 43 and 1/3 (yay this time we actually spent money on this garbage to get a dude that sounds simmilar to tom hanks and or james earl jones)

BUY THE TOY LITTLE CHILDEREN SCREAM BEG HERASS FOR THE SAME TOY YOU BOUGHT 3 YEARS AGO (with the crap silkscreen that rubs off in a week saying bueaty and the beast 32)

honestly i dont know whats worse Disney or Nintendo (PLAY SUPER MARIO WORLD 88!!! its the same old shit but your too stupid to know you can download the last generation of the exact same game for free!!, or my favorite buy pokemon ruby, its the 7 year old RED version but with new menus yay!!)

(i do not support software piracy, but it is leagle for you do download games on a 24 hour basis in the US, basicly renting a game thats non rentable, if you intend to keep it spend the 4.99us$ on the used copy of mario cart so your not breaking any laws, tax title and financing fees not included stock# 934837573812d)

1. Barney
2. Teletubbies
3. The Wiggles
4. Caillou (However that little bald headed kids name is spelled lol)

5. Dora the Explorer

Dora teaches spanish and multiculturalism. Sesame Street used to do the same thing, but they went down hill a while ago.

I can live with Dora, it's semi-educational, and she doesn't whine or throw tantrums, Barney has never been allowed in my house cause my little sister liked Barney til she was freakin 12. Teletubbies are ok in my book, funny little aliens are always cool. Caillou sucks, it's part of that generation of shows that makes it "ok to have feelings" aka the kid is a complete snotwad who someone should spank for being a whiny brat. There are 3 or 4 in that genre that are never allowed on my TV.

Taco the wiggles hurt my brain, you're not secretly married to one of them or something?
