With the release of Windows Vista coming soon. Will Second life be able to handle Windows Vista?

Second Life can't handle itself, let alone windows, I think it will be wait and see, unless any people testing vista here can confirm it working with a beta?

Yes. But that's before that start adding more 'shiny things'.
Don't worry. The next generation of machines will be able run SecondLife as a damn screensaver... after we scrap Vista and install XP :D

But Windows Vista IS coming real soon now, they're just holding up while waiting for some vista-capable games like Duke Nukem Forever.

Depends if you call January 2007 soon.Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but its not MS waiting for game developers that is the problem... also if you are waiting on Duke Nukem forever you might be in for a longer wait than for Vista.

But Duke Nuken Forever is coming real soon now too, I mean they've said that for almost 10 years so it has to be true.

January 2007? Somehow, given it's history, I feel it'll easily slip some more, like March-April 2007 or even later.

You want a release date? The day after Microsoft releases their previous OS' under GPL.

I'd load it up on my Vista test machine, but that happens to be a tablet PC with 512mb of RAM. I can barely run the OS smoothly, let alone adding an application.

Also, at the Beta 1 stage, I think most people are focused on the core OS itself and the multitude of problems it has. 5308 and 5342 were ok builds, but there is still a long way to go. I think once it goes Beta 2 (or public Beta) that is when they want to focus more on compatibility and the like. For now, us true beta testers are just trying to make it a solid OS in and of itself.

The inquiry here raised a technical question, which some people answered. Just because people ranted in here, or just because the issue will not be a true "technical support issue" for another year, does not mean it is not directly related to SL and technical in nature.

I'd like to see this moved back to the appropriate forum.

Technically, SL should work with Vista. It's actual performance characteristics won't be know until Microsoft gets closer to release, and equipment makers start churning out bigger/faster/stronger/longer hardware. It's said that you'll need a high-end graphics card just to run the User Interface and will need 512mb to launch it, a at least a gig to do anything useful. Now, I'm all for higher numbers, but for fucks sake, the Operating System (ie, the thing that interprets software to the machine layer) should not require that much just to run well.

I'm just sayin'. But that I said that about XP back in the 1ghz era, too.

At least for me, Second Life will barely run in Windows Vista. I can get it to load, but I get less than 1 fps. I think that is mainly due to beta (or maybe alpha) quality video drivers. As the release date for Vista gets closer, things should (or better) improve.

Microsoft did some screwy stuff to OpenGL with Vista. Basicly OGL doesn't fit into thier security model so they have made some creative restriction. Alot of current hardware didn't fit into thier security model. Vista is the next logical step towards Trusted Computing (which in a nut shell means "never trust the user";).

It's still bloatware, though, even if by the time it gets released we'll all be amazingly overspecced. OS X will run with 96 meg RAM on an old 366 MHz G3 - not quickly, and don't try doing more than one thing at once, but it'll run happily enough, I've done it. And that's not exactly a lightweight OS. In fact, with every release it gets faster on older machines.

This isn't an advocacy thing, it's just that clearly it's possible to write a decent OS that's also scalable. MS are shooting themselves in the foot if they demand that people also buy a new PC if they want Vista. Most people keep computers for years, and they're going to say "no thanks, I'll stick with what I've got". There are people out there still running 98 for that exact same reason.

On topic: Yes, no, maybe and technical reasons why.

Off topic: Linux rulez, Macintosh is for lovers, Micro$oft zucks.
