Darwinism is the argument empiricists had for taking over land, enslaving indigenous people, creating empires... throughout history (since Darwin). "Survival of the fittest" and all, the "fittest" being the ones with the guns and the greed for land, free labor, gold, etc.

However, a lot of that activity predated Darwin, the concept of "Manifest Destiny", is more inspired to my mind, by Christianity, than Darwins work. That aside, its ridiculous this child was censured like this. _____________________

However, a lot of that activity predated Darwin, the concept of "Manifest Destiny", is more inspired to my mind, by Christianity, than Darwins work. That aside, its ridiculous this child was censured like this. I typed almost the exact same thing before i realized I'd get to add "argued with a 7 year old child who wasn't even there at the time" to my list of accomplishments.  _____________________

OMG! how funny. The article said the poem might have been more than the middle kids could handle. What it sounded like, though, was that it was too much for the PARENTS to handle. Kids know all about violence and power/control. It's part of their daily landscape.

I think she's learning a very valuable lesson in Freedom of Speech...
You have the freedom to say whatever you want, and everyone else has the freedom to ignore you. The poem is really quite well done, but the topic is not really appropriate for the age she was reading to. If some white kid or asian kid or middle eastern kid had talked about a topic beyond the keen of their peers, child abuse, sex, blood bits of war, abortion, other 'grown up' topics we're supose to be coddling our kids from, they would have gotten the hook too. Not that I really agree with that philosophy, but I can understand why they do it. |

That being said, racism has no part in the school system. The school system can refuse to allow such poetry as its intent is soley racist and they can also black list the girl from ever performing at one of the events again.
