Second life unable to run because your video card drivers are out of date or unsuppored!

BS!

System ran fine before 1.9.xx update.

I see something is wrong in the log file but no idea how to fix it. I have downloaded and installed the newest drivers from the nvidia site. I have uninstalled and reinstalled SL twice now. I am starting to wonder if it was smart to pre pay a year?

Any ideas would be much appreciated since I am would guess I will not hear back from SL support until next week.

not sure
03-17-2006 17:28
not sure what your issue is... i ran it once on my Windows machine after the 1.9 update while waiting for the OSX universal binary test release to be available, and it ran fine. Its a nForce chipset motherboard with the newest version chipset drivers, and a PCIe Geforce 6800GT 256mb video card with the latest nvidia.com drivers.... just letting you know so you dont think its just the cards fault

check your hardware acceleration
03-17-2006 19:54
SL will give that error if your hardware acceleration is broken or disabled. Run dxdiag (from START) and make sure your DirectX is working. Also check your DirectX hardware acceleration level in DISPLAY PROPERTIES / SETTINGS / ADVANCED / TROUBLESHOOTING.

If DirectX is ok, you can check your OpenGL acceleration with the GLSL DEMO from 3DLabs:
http://developer.3dlabs.com/downloads/index.htm

I hope that helps. Im running NForce4 with 6800 GS, so I know it can work.

OK this is odd:

First:

Display Memory: n/a

Then:

DDraw Status: Not Available
D3D Status: Enabled
AGP Status: Not Available

Support asked me to remove the nvidia video drivers, run Driver Cleaner Pro, then reinstall. I have done that. When that did not work I removed the video and nforce drivers, ran driver cleaner pro, and reinstalled them all. I sure hope my video card is not flaking out, but it still works under battelfield 2 and WoW so I am pretty sure thats not the problem.

Any more ideas here guys?

Thank you,

Pain

Well I haven't looked that far, but I can tell you the SL client can have REAL problems correctly identifying hardware.

My 6800GS (and it really is, I checked elasewhere) shows as a 6800GT, and my old P4 3.2 used to show as 'unsupported CPU'.

My new 64bit AMD is correctly identified, but shows the incorrect clock speed!!!

Oh, and I got a dire warning about my new motherboard having outdated drivers too - I checked, they weren't...

Check your BIOS first. Find the Video Setting where it asks to boot as PCI or AGP. See if that helps. You could also check to make sure SL knows it's an AGP card in the preferences. Cant think of much else to say at the moment. Will see what I can come up with.

having a 6800GS show up as a GT is not surprising, as the GS is newer an d might not have been added to the data base as a possibility. I havent seen an AMD chip show up wrong though. Remember that AMD doesnt always list the actual frequenecy (aka clock speed) with the chip. Just like my "Athlon 64 3200+" doesnt say it anywhere. 3200+ is a model number that is used to know how fast it performs compared to other AMD chips. where a 3500+ would be faster and a 3000+ would be slower. my 3200+ runs at 2GHz.

OK, checked the bios and it all looks good. FYI this is PCIE card, and has worked great in SL for the last few months.

Thank all of you for your ideas ... not sure I am willing to reload just to get this working when it really seems to be a problem with the SL client. A while back I recall a way to make the client skip detection of video card, anyone know that command? I will search the forums for it, but if anyone knows it off the top of their head :D

Thanks again.

Secondlife.exe -noprobe

Also if you have a decent connection I've found adding -purge to clear out your cache speeds texture loading a bit.

hmm did not do it either, FYI support asked the exact error and thought maybe it would help one of you

Second life is unable to run because your video card drivers are out of date or unsupported. Please make sure you have the latest video card drivers installed.

Mine 'runs' at 2.4 according to SL! It is of course running at 2.0 according to all my other software....

acceleration
03-18-2006 19:19
The only time I've seen that error is when hardware acceleration (DirectX or OpenGL) isnt working. Did you try the GLSL Demo tests? It appears from your log that you failed some of the DirectX tests.

If you're running utilities like RIVATUNER or NVTWEAK, uninstall those. If you're overclocking, clock down.

If you're running Quadro drivers, switch back to standard ForceWare drivers.

The line in your log:
Direct3D 7 test results: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x8007000e (Out of memory)

is curious. An error in any DirectX test is a sign of a problem. I would try reinstalling the latest nForce4 chipset drivers, from Nvidia.com.

Dont overlook the possibility of bad system memory, either. Bad system memory can cause no end of weird problems. I know. I've been there. Run MEMTEST86:

http://www.memtest86.com/

It *WILL* detect bad system memory. If you're using cheap memory in a high-speed system, that memory will eventually fail on you. I've had it happen on two different systems. I learned my lesson and now I buy CORSAIR memory. :)

yes I am running all stock nvidia drivers for the nforce and card, I only installed rivatuner after the problems started to check on the card. O yea as for over clocking I am chicken sheet and will not do that :). Guess its time for some memtest, but damn its quality corsair and I mean not their low end!

Will let you know what I find. Thanks all.

not one error in 10 passes on mem test! Err, this is nuts. I am wondering at this point if a battlefield 2 update might have messed something up, since I did up date that while SL was down that day. This is nuts, I even updated directx to see if that was the problem.

should use memtest86+ (instead of memtest86; memtest86+ continued dev where memtest stopped), it has better support for nVidia nForce 4 chipset then memtest86.

bootvis.exe
03-19-2006 18:38
Googling, I see some forum claims that bootvis.exe (a microsoft utility):
http://www.tweakhound.com/xp/bootvis/index.htm
sometimes solves the DirectX "out of memory" problem. I havent tried it, myself.

I also see claims that a "ghost" second display adapter (check Hardware Devices) can cause DirectX to become confused like this.

downloaded memtest86+ and am going to run it over night :)

read up on bootvis.exe and did not sound like it would fix the problem but at this point not much to loose as it looks like I am going for a reinstall anyway if I do not figure it out see!

WOOT!

also downloaded the old nvidia foreware drivers, unistalled the current ones, ran driver clean, and installed the old ones no help.

For fun I unistalled SL again and they used regedit to remove any ref to secondlife and resintalled for good messure.

Few questions: anyone else running this card/chipset combo with battlefield 2? I really do not think thats the problem, but trying to rule it out. Also might it be directx 9.3c thats the problem? I think thats the number, its running memtest right now so I can not check but its the newest one 9 some c??

Still hating life at this point, but once again thank you for all your great ideas.

ok 26 passes and 11 hours later no errors on memtest86+, so I should be albe to rule that out.

O yea, also checked and no goast cards in hardware config either.

have you tried tufftest?
03-20-2006 09:25
Tufftest puts your whole system through stress testing. It's fun to watch and it can pinpoint hardware weaknesses. Though I suspect your issue is software, at this point.

Hmm, I have a '256MB NVIDA(r) GeForceTM Go 680' on a laptop and I don't have any probems (luckly). No, I'm not a tech person, but just wanted to add that incase it might help.

If you're running utilities like RIVATUNER or NVTWEAK, uninstall those. If you're overclocking, clock down.

I'd just like to point out that uninstalling these after changes have been made is pointless. They are registry tweakers nothing more. Just revert back to default settings if you changed anything within these tools.

If you're running Quadro drivers, switch back to standard ForceWare drivers.

I'd also like to point out this is also pointless. The Quatro & ForceWare drivers are the same since Quatros & GeForces are the same basic chipsets. Big difference being clock & ram speeds. Only way you can get a GeForce to be reconised as a Quatro is if you mod the card (softmodding using RivaTuner is the safest & most popular). If you are having problems with your geforce softmodded as a quatro simply change it back.
