these days, no one's can... we need some form of light tax again, if not in actual $L mabye have 'light' prims cost 10, or even 25 'normal' prims worth of usage... just somethin to stop people setting whole buildings LIGHT when it really really really causes such massive client slowdown

I think the update geom lag problem may be tied to the relatively new no object clip (can't remember the exact option name). you know, the one that keeps it from cutting off part of an object if it;s right at the edge of your view range. next time it happens try going to your options and allowing it to clip things off, see if that helps. This would also explain why it effects some people some places and not others, as people tend to have varrying view distances.

Rickard: This happens to me even when I stand still, indoors (and outdoors). It hits me at the strangest times. Thanks for the suggestion and I'll try some more experimenting.
eltee: Thanks... I agree laglight is not good. I have local lighting disabled. ![]() My FPS drops down to 0.5-2 (typically) when I am hit by this UpdateGeom stuff. Thank you graciously for all the screenshot updates, Huns. I have some too... I was recently partying at Le Cadre Island, when out of nowhere, it hit me. No one else seemed to complain, so I think it was only affecting me at the time. It is quite devastating in that it slows down the WHOLE client, including typing and accessing of any windows in Second Life (Inventory, IM, etc.). Attrocious it is. As soon as I TPed back to Da Boom, it was surprisingly smoother. :| Ya can tell which are which. The good, the bad, and the alternate! _____________________

This has been happening to me a lot recently, even in the quiet sanctity of my skybox.
My screenshots are just like the last few that Torley and Huns have posted. Alt-2 says UpdateGeom is the culprit, Alt-9 says Image Update is to blame. _____________________

I'm experiencing this right now again in Umber. So is Lost Thereian -- we're both seeing a lot of RED on the Alt-2 frame console.
Every day this happens to me at some point ![]() Any new news about this? (Remember, it's not just your imagination! ![]() _____________________

I was just with Lost in Clunn... more of the lag happening... BIG spurts of the UpdateGeom red (on the Alt-2 Frame Console), and then it goes away. Several minutes later, it comes back.
Still many mysteries remain. However, I am surely and actively collecting data on this, as for the Residents who it affects, it is of major concern and rather debilitating. If you've had experiences with this too and aren't sure what to call it, well, now you know. Please feel free to post screenshots... one of Lost's recent experiences is attached. ![]() _____________________

I've been experiencing this on and off for the last few days, and according to anecdotal reports I've shared with some, I'm not alone. I'm curious who else might be going through the "UpdateGeom lag", so if you are, please do post! ![]() How it goes is like this: I'll be travelling through any one of a given number of sims (for example, Gualala or Zermatt), and things will be fine. All of a sudden, the framerate will drop SHARPLY to 2-3 FPS. Which, of course, sucks. ![]() With Debug menu on, I quickly hit Alt-2 and notice how much the dark red color of the UpdateGeom is EATING UP the charts! Ouch. And then... when the framerate goes up, the UpdateGeom usage proportion goes down. It will seem to resolve itself if I just let time go by, but it'll likely come back again in another few min. What makes it even more confusing is, with numerous avatars in one area, it will only affect some and not others. I don't know more about the technical details behind this, but if anyone has info, it's appreciated in advance. And: this has only happened to me recently with the latest version of SL, I think. Cheerio! ![]() Oh gees! I thought I was alone on this! _____________________

For me, no - it happens at different places, even places that have always been relatively 'lag free' for me. I haven't made any changes to my settings or done anything I can think of to make this happen. In fact, I've had it in sims with 4000 FPS!!! _____________________

EXACTLY, Marker. LOL thanks for posting... 4000 SimFPS, tho? HOLY MOLY MOTHER OF INVENTION.
![]() Glad you found out you weren't the only one. If there's anyone else... post your experiences and screenshots here! Hopefully we can help the Lindens nail this one and kill it. I mean that in the best possible way, of course. ![]() _____________________

my friend and I both have some serious lag issues in different areas with and without tons of people there i wear the curly hair she does not so i don't think it would actually be the curly hair completely. But I have had such massive lag on TeaZers Isle and then again just flying to get to other places.

Curly prim hairs aka hell laggers on earth - only affect client fps tho
Torus clutter, small and alot of them will make you client crawl like a snail if you are near them or look in their direction , do msg me if you want a demonstration as i can kill your client fps by wearing a big big torus hair ![]() Sure they are *pretty* but whats the point in having one that no one can look at without totally dying , go go go texture hairs, you got my vote ![]() As for Geometric lag - It happend a few times again, but i got bored waiting for alt-2 , or alt-9 to pop up - so i didnt take a screenshot, but it was the usual major lag, freeeeeeze and wait again. |

When this has happened to me, using f9 it seems to be a combination of Callbacks and Image Update. They will stretch from one side of the screen to the other, then abruptly go back to normal, when the framerate will increase from anything from 0.9 to 8 or 9 fps.

More confirmation... I'm experiencing the sudden, decisive, crippling lag too. It seems to only happen to me in certain places. It never happens to me at home. It always happens at a certain club.
Both debugs are tellin me its all Geo Update. I have particles turned off. I have pretty conservative detail settings. I have used "show updates" to troubleshoot anything that might be doing crazy updates (and found one lighting device that was doing a ridiculous amount of updates) at the club. Something else I see when it happens my Ping Sim & Ping User go wildy high. I don't know if that's a cause of it or a result of it, I suspect the latter... Sometimes my screen is frozen for 3 seconds. It seems to happen *more* with a screenful of curly-haired ladies, but it doesn't not happen when I'm looking away from them. Its pretty likely that I'll experience it when I swing around and look towards the dance floor tho. Hm. When I zoom right in on that lovely hair I go to slideshow mode with looong light blue bars on the alt-f9 screen. Its crazy lagged for a while, then its ok for a while, etc... Help! JL p.s. ok i just convinced my friend to take off her hair and it got a LOT BETTER. Zooming the camera around I still get lagged but not as bad. Its still all geometry updates as far as i can see. p.p.s. is that hair really as many prims as it looks like it is?!?!?!? |

No prim hair day
02-11-2005 11:58
In my experience, its curly prim hair.. I know some people with hair that is a ton of toruses.. Sure the hair looks nice and all, but my client *stops* for a second everytime the hair comes into view.. I've taken to asking people to take it off and telling them why. So please... avoid the torus hair ![]() We need to set one day to have no prim hair and see if the lag changes ![]() -Blueman I'm not only a prim hair hater.. I'm also a hypocrite! |

Hmmm... I'd like to clarify that this problem has occurred to a number of Residents *without* there being much "prim hair" in sight. This is something different that strikes. While there may be overlap, I have been hit in areas outside of crowded clubs (as an example).
It's odd and anomalous, and I've tried a variety of things like closing my Inventory window, but it'll still hit me. Pictures are provided as previously posted, and the latest readouts I'm getting are consistent with earlier delibitating behavior. ![]() Thanks for posting your experiences, everyone -- apparently there are some who are affected who don't know what to call it. I can't think of a better name at the moment unless Lindens have a finer recommendation, but I duly hope this will be entered in the visible Bug Queue, as for those it affects, it is crippling. _____________________

Has anyone still been having this in 1.6.x? I've experienced it somewhat regularly, and I'm trying to pinpoint some of the factors that may be a variable -- things in common to look for. At least now it seems more confined to areas with complex geometry like crowded, prim-full areas and twisted torii and the like.
The shortcut now to "view the bars" is Alt-Shift-2, and if you have a lot of dark red that corresponds to the legend, then that would most likely be UpdateGeom lag. Observe what happens, especially if it spikes, taking up most of the screen, and freezes you in place for a few moments (which can seem like eternity) before finally letting go. Please share your experiences if this nasty variety of lag is still hitting you, or if you've noticed it for the first time. ![]() _____________________

Hi Torley, yes it continues. You can watch the red bars get progressively longer on the ctrl-shift-2 screen until they take up the whole screen & the client FPS is down under 1 for 10 to 15 seconds, then all of the sudden it clears up & back to normal til next time (normal FPS for me is between 15-20). It seems to happen every few minutes, but that is just an approxmation.
Something that has changed is that this whole thing does not reflect on the ctrl-shift-9 graph at all -- pre 1.6 you would see the same info on that graph, now you don't. However, that too is just from memory as I am unable to login at the moment. Link to an ignored Hotline to Linden post on the topic. |

One of the most frustrating things about this particular problem is how difficult it is to describe and reliably reproduce (if there is a method that can bring it upon an avatar again and again). In 1.6.x it seems to be more confined to prim-heavy areas to me, but this may just be my anecdotal experience and not actual scientific data. Thanks for posting about it, Jimmy, and I'll be observing what happens along with you as it hits us again.
